Albums of the same songs, yet clearly different songs.

I am looking for albums that contain songs that are all clearly the same song, yet, all clearly different songs--if such a concept exists.

And I don't mean the same "song" remixed, or the first wiseass to snicker an obviously dull band. I am thinking more the gist of same song properties, or certain patterns or similar melodies that appear consistently within the music.

I have no examples to give, but I'm wondering if it's possible to have enough variation to keep a whole record intersting, yet, maintain the sameness throughout.

Not sure if it's quite what you're going for, but I'm thinking of Brian Wilson's "Smile," which employs a number of recurring motifs and themes, which pop up in various arrangements and melodic variations on different songs. This is pretty common in art music generally though, and derivations therefrom (ie musicals) so I'm not sure really where to go from there in answering the question.... also, it's really late at night for me right now.

Jesus and Mary Chain, either before they figured out the difference between major and minor or chords or during that period where they decided not to care for a while?

Didn't Jonathan King do an album where every track had the same initial backing track? I seem to remember all the tracks were about pop stars. One was certainly about Morrissey.

'Train of Love' and 'Western Hero' on Neil Young's 'Sleeps With Angels' have the same melody, if this is an example of what you're looking for.

seven months pass...
Scott Walker - The Drift
I'm only on track 6 of this abomination, but I wonder if this sort of record is what I was initially thinking of.
(I guess only I can answer that.. but I can't quite remember the specifics of the creativity that my mind was reaching toward.)

The Drift. The tracks are different songs, yet clearly, the same song.
?
There's layered variation and sameness. (mockable description, but I'm lacking the words to capture what I've heard so far. don't yet have the complete picture, but I assume it not to vary much by its finale.)

69 Love Songs, no?

And while I haven't heard it, Love is All - Nine Times that Same Song seems like it would be a good answer.
