Julian, of course.

he's SO tired and cute!
and snide...so snide.

eedd, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Angus. I feel for Billy though. Kid brother drummer, big break, where did he go?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

I got confused for a while and thought you meant Billy Name.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

Willie Loco ALexander for me. His solo career isn't even underrated, it seems it's not rated at all. Now I just need to find a MP3 of "Kerouac" to see if it's still as good as I thought it was when I was 18.

Not a lot of love for Doug, despite "Jesus" and "Candy Says," which should redeem everything else ever.

A|ex P@reene (Pareene), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

Or, indeed, Nico.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I never understand all the Yule-hate myself. Lou Reed himself has no problem with the guy. (Nico was never REALLY a Velvet, really.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

In the late 70s or early 80s, I think, Creem talked to Lou, John, Moe, and maybe Sterling, and also Doug, who was working in a Jersey warehouse. The general idea seemed to be that their manager Mike Sesnick had tried to use Doug as a Lou-soundalike-puppet, and even claimed that he, Sesnick, had written a lot of their songs, and had a right to choose his own mouthpiece. Lou: "Loaded is a lot of people's favorite, and I'm not even on it." I always wanted to hear Squeeze: it's got Deep Purple's drummer, right?

don, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

I've got this. It's pretty poor. And Yes, Ian Paice is the drummer.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

You are being generous, Mark : It is absolutely awful. (This may have something to do with the fact I paid 80 pounds for a crappy italian bootleg of it....)

snowballing (snowballing), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Well, one of the tracks is almost OK.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

It's no worse than Loaded.

I third Angus.

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

I fourth angus. hands down.

bb (bbrz), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Ha! That Lou Reed quote is great. Don't you get it Lou? That's why we love it!

dan. (dan.), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

This gives me a chance to ask this question: I've read that Rob Norris was in the last touring version of the Velvets circa '73 or '74. Same Rob Norris that was in the Bongos a few years later?

mike a, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Dean Wareham

fsdfsd, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

oh man, it's totally Doug, i don't care what anyone says. Dig the organ solo on Live 69's What Goes On, his vocals on Candy Says, his bass on Foggy Notion...A talented guy, no doubt about it...

Tyler Wilcox (tylerw), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Doug Yule - Classic or Doug?:

For real, Nico.

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Thursday, 24 November 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

But, again, Nico wasn't a Velvet!

See? It doesn't say "The Velvet Underground FEATURING Nico"!

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 24 November 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

It says "ooh, pink banana"!

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 24 November 2005 08:42 (twenty years ago)

Doug - for his work on Loaded, by far their best recd.

Rob Norris - I always wondered if it's the Bongos guy. Drums Along The Hudson is a great record - a wierd mix of powerpop and jerky new wave with cameos from members of Clock DVA and TG!

Dr.C, Thursday, 24 November 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

"...Loaded, by far their best recd."

Ick. My least favorite by far except for Max's Kansas City, made even worse by the absence of Mo Tucker. Seriously, the first time I heard that record I thought "what is UP with all these drum fills? It sounds so weird" and then learned later that it was Billy.

I pick Angus by a wide margin.

sleeve (sleeve), Thursday, 24 November 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

Doug and Angus = BOTH GREBT
