I need views on songs that deal with war music, for example like the "War...What is it good for?"

School project?

My thoughts exactly... how about Greil Marcus' Dylan book? Surely there's some crap about protest songs in there.

I was going to post last night, but debated on how best to do it. I will give you a list in no particular order of importance.

I was really keen on war, I thought it was great, and then I heard "The War Song" by Culture Club. That told me, eh.

All songs about war are good, except for "I Fought In A War" by Belle And Sebastian because it's too unrealistic.

Come on, Oliver's Army wipes the floor.

"Billy, Don't Be A Hero"?

Which attracted 110 complaints when Simon Bates played it after a Gulf War news bulletin. No, I can't believe it in retrospect, either ...

How 'bout Metallica's "One"? Maybe it's just the video, but that one kills me softly with its song. Kills me softly. With its song.

What? Still no 'Two Tribes'? Check out the 10 minute extended mix, surely in itself a brilliant critique on songs on war.

None of them received a hero's welcome. None of them.

Any of those stupid books on the 60s. Any of them.

Also, there are songs that deal with the band War, and the critics rightly love those songs, because they mercilessly deride that awful band. Cf. everything the punks had to say about "corporate rock".

"Some Mother's Son" by the Kinks is the most poignant war song I've ever heard. Makes me weep nearly every time. The lyrics are maddeningly well written and they're backed by such an innocent melody which goes perfectly with the words as they depict soldiers as viewed by their mothers. Genius. I would definitely check this one out.

"Sonething About England" by the Clash is also surprisingly accurate in its history.

You need views? Here's one. Contrary to the consensus, Elvis Costello's reading of 'Shipbuilding' leaves Robert Wyatt's drowning.

ALL songs about war are good? Even "If You Tolerate This..."? ;)

three years pass...
Mike Marqusee (sp?) is good on songs that deal with war, in Chimes of Freedom.

I have not been able to find a thread about books about pop, or I would talk about it on that.
