This leaked today. Thoughts? The self-titled track I like, but the rest of the album is worse than any rilo kiley album. Its too stripped down, and the songs are not developed enough.

i've had it a while and i like it a lot. it's country and it suits her. she should go for that bobbie gentry position.

snotty moore, Thursday, 24 November 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'd fully expected to hate this A LOT. But, unlike everything I've ever heard by Rilo Kiley, it doesn't suck at all. Even the Wilburys cover is enjoyable... except for that no-good Ben Gibbard making a mockery of the Roy Orbison parts.

I AM COMPLETELY SMITTEN WITH THIS ALBUM!

It's taken me ages though, the first few listens found me picking holes in it all over the place, but it's grown and grown and now I think it's completely wonderful, and I want her to do a double-header tour with Richard Hawley...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

I really, really like this album. Always been on the fence when it comes to Rilo Kiley, but damn do I like this. "Born Secular", "Big Guns", and the title track are all great. And yeah, I love that Wilbury's cover - once you ignore the Gibbard/Orbison thing. But hell, I love Gibbard and Oberst so take from that what you will. I do like the addition of M. Ward, he sounds excellent in that tune.

jonviachicago, Tuesday, 13 December 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

gah, i'm still completely into this record. that said, the wilbury's cover damn near put me off the whole thing - i think it's awful, lazy, indulgent tosh and not in keeping with the wonderfully understated rest of the album.

but apart from that...wow. it's a lovely piece of work.

OK, this is the best thing I've heard in awhile. She's great.

I'm tempted to order this, but am afraid it's just going to be Saddle Creek Neko-lite - is that off the mark at all?

No, this is astoundingly good considering what it is (a fucking alt-country album). "Rise Up With Fists" may be my single of the year already. It's just amazingly... honest (?) for an album of this kind, it doesn't just sound like Indie Poppet #2173 sitting down and playing Bobbie Gentry for a laugh, it actually sounds like it needed to be recorded.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:31 (twenty years ago)

This is my favorite record of the year, right alongside Neko Case's upcoming Fox Confessor Brings The Flood, which is a masterpiece.

But as for Rabbit Fur Coat, it's just so very listenable. Never sounds bad, and has stood up well over repeated (and repeated) listenings.

Between this and Neko Case, 2006 is clearly the year of the Red-head Alt Country Girl. Both records are under 40 minutes too.

Title track is my least fave. on a real good album

"I'm tempted to order this, but am afraid it's just going to be Saddle Creek Neko-lite - is that off the mark at all?"
Not far off the mark at all. Saddle Creek stuff is so polite - you'd think these young musicians would play with a bit of grit, but it's pretty bland. The Neko album blows it clean out the water.

stew!, Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Jenny's a thousand times more interesting as a narrative voice though - Neko's got generations on generations of precedents, but Lewis' thing is almost entirely her own and very much of her time and place (21st century, Omaha-via-Hollywood) - making country fit into that life story is way more interesting than faking a Dust Bowl background like most alt-country waifs.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:52 (twenty years ago)

but it's pretty bland

it's a solo record, what do you want? She sings great, writes good words, and the music doesn't get in the way, or drag it down. The only tracks the band makes any impression at all are the cover and the song following that.

dan. (dan.), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:54 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't say Jenny's more interesting a narrative voice than Neko. The lyrics are ok, with the odd lapse into self help speak, and there are some pretty songs on there, but I just find it a wee bit tepid. She over-enunciates as well! Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but it's just cos I was listening to it back to back with the new Neko, which is stunning.

stew!, Wednesday, 1 March 2006 18:01 (twenty years ago)

A friend invited me to her 2nd solo show ever a few weeks ago and she totally outperformed any expectations I had (admittedly, little to none). Also, funny to see one of my old college DJ bros in her band.

2. Jenny Lewis, Acid Tongue

(Sept. 23) Unlike the last time out, Jenny Lewis doesn't have the Watson Twins watching her back on her new solo album. But she does have an all-star bunch of pals, including She & Him and Elvis Costello, who helped her record this disc over three weeks in Van Nuys, Calif. The country-tinged gospel of Rabbit Fur Coat can still be heard on a few tracks, but Lewis also takes things in a smouldering, '70s California-rock direction that's worth a listen. - If you want a preview of this all-analog record, you'll have to rely on some (appropriately) old-timey technology for now. Call 1-888-717-2243 for a scratchy answering-machine version of Acid Tongue.

one month passes...

Saw her on Conan the other night, liked it. Do the songs on the album in generally have a fuller arrangement than her performance on the show? On Conan it was just her and a small group of backing vocalists.

i want pedal steel and piano. "all analogue recording" gives me perhaps unfounded hopes for crisp & warm production values in line with, say, "Wolfking of LA", Jerry Jeff Walker (circa "Bein Free"), or the third Burrito Brothers album.

ian, Saturday, 11 October 2008 04:48 (seventeen years ago)

also i am favorably influence by the LP being titled "acid tongue."
but i really, really don't want it sound like any kind of elephant six shit.

ian, Saturday, 11 October 2008 05:10 (seventeen years ago)

it doesn't. It's not as good/consistent as RFC but it's still pretty good. It's a California comedown album w/ some carole king tapestry stuff going on.

Album is bigger overall that AT is (as a track) but AT is just her w/ a bunch of dudes singling close harmony so it's pretty representative

Acid Tongue is a pretty splendid song to be sure. Anyone heard the album? (besides those upthread obv.)

Freedom, Thursday, 6 November 2008 17:44 (seventeen years ago)

I loved Rabbit Fur Coat, but the new one isn't nearly in the same league. It's a disappointment, same way that Under The Blacklight was compared to More Adventurous.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 6 November 2008 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

I like the new one quite a bit better than RFC.

anybody have/heard her 2010 album Jenny and Johnny?

remy bean, Monday, 27 June 2011 14:24 (fourteen years ago)

I got it and saw her/them on the accompanying tour. Not bad, but nothing reaches the heights of the best RK work or her two solo records, IMO. Best tracks are probably "Big Wave" and "Animal."

i saw rilo kiley once and jonathan rice opened and when RK came on a wag in the crowd yelled "JONATHAN RICE SUCKS!" and probably a majority laughed, and i felt kind of bad but

i picked this up the other day when i heard about the rk breakup. it's funny, i don't even *love the music* or anything (it's fine but nothing about it is really remarkable) but like with rk i just kind of sit back and allow myself to be awed by her talent. she seems like one of those people for whom music isn't very hard.
