Is this a hidden gem from the 60's or is it a piece of garbage. I enjoy it immensely.

It's a great record. James & Bobby Purify made other good stuff too, almost all of which is on their '100% Purified Soul'. No Morning Glory (no relation to Oasis), but close to perfect.

That's the only track of theirs I've heard. A gem indeed.

What else is to be sought out?

I've never heard anything else from them. But man, this song just oozes soul. I hear it and I get goosebumps, the ending is ace too. "hanging on a string, i'll do anything" that whole background singing from one of them. Brilliant.

The song was written by Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, who wrote LOADS of great soul/pop/hits for artists like Aretha Franklin, The Sweet Inspirations, Irma Thomas, James Carr etc. etc. James and Bobby were THEIR puppets!

Penn & Oldham: great great songwriters.

Is one allowed to prefer the Purifys' mid-70s remake of I'm Your Puppet? Cos I do.

I've always liked Donny Osmond's cover the best. I'm clearly biased, but it's so nice...

eleven months pass...
Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham performed "I'm Your Puppet" on Jools Holland's show. if you missed the performance and get a chance to see that week's show again, jump at the oppportunity - it confirmed all the rumours about Dan Penn's singing abilities!

Bobby's grandson (james' great-nephew), Bobby played running back the last couple years with the University of Colorado. Whenever I watched their games on tv I'd get the song stuck in my head...

Pet Shop Boys did a nice homage in a way: "You dress me up/I'm your puppet..." (from "Rent").

The syncopation on the last "I'm your puppet" of the chorus is great!

One wonders who, if anyone, would classify this track as a "piece of garbage." It's a stone classic, of course, no matter who sings it of course. (Well, the versions I've got--Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, the James and Bobby Purify one, a reggae one on a Jamdown comp--are all amazing, anyway.)
