Robyn inches out Eve.

Haven't heard in a while but my instinct is going for Eurythmics here.

2)Robyn
3)Madonna
12)Eve

The Eve song is one of her best, and I love Eve, so there's no fight.

Dave and Annie rule this one.

Eve: "Exec to my own shit, dog, I ownin dot coms!"
Madonna: "She's trouble, in a word -- get closer to the fire"

Robyn: "Who's that girl, what if I'm nothing like her?

I know there's no such girl -- I can't take the pressure!"

Eurythmics are in a league of their own here, at least among those four.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 25 November 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

i.e. Eve and Madonna shift between insider and outsider voices; eve details her own strengths, madonna details the strengths of some other girl who is probably actually her (the same thing she did with her role in desperately seeking susan - she was madonna playing a character who acted exactly like madonna (not to mention rosanna arquette, who also takes up the madonna role; madonna attributes are cooptable, reusable? madonna presents: glam-raggedy tools for living)) but both also take the voice of their smitten admirers - "Who's That Girl?"

whereas Robyn is genuinely befuddled - whoever that girl is, it's not Robyn

Eurhythmics also helplessly, hopelessly not That Girl, but it's a ballad/story, a more cowardly version of "Jolene", rather than the kinds of thoughts that annoy the brane even in the absence of any story with any particular boy/fans whatsoever

Tracer H posts great posts. I like his casual, ironic erudition.

It's Madonna for me!

I have just this minute woken up from a dream in which I met Annie Lennox. We had a laugh about a little girl in Superdrug who pulled the entire contents of a shelf down. Annie offered me tickets for a show that evening and asked if there was any song she wanted me to sing. All I could think of was Who That Girl.
So the Eurythmics it is, then.

Eurythmics. The rest are crap, even Madonna's.

I just like that Robyn is calling out all the previous "Who's That Girl" singers on their fantastical narcissism. "There's no such girl"!!

Plus it's a great great song. It's neck and neck with Eve, though, for me. I don't want to decide between them.

It seems that I have never heard the songs you mean, Tracer H.
