Anyone got any recommendations of old stuff that sounds like what Reverso 68/Optimus and Bear Funk and Stranger and Nick Chacona make now? I guess it's called Balearic too nowadays, but don't know if that's an accurate name or not.

What are the classics in this scene, where do I start? And also any current stuff that's really good that I might be missing out on.

not sure if i'm on the right track...

Grace Jones - Feel Up (larry Levan Mix)
Began Cedric - Trans brooklyn express (burning hot)
Bregan cekic and tee scott - Change
Black Devil (you know that, of course)
NYC Peech Boys - Don't Make Me Wait

i'm not sure what the new stuff you're talking about sounds like so maybe i'm wrong on those.

I guess a bit like Chicken Lips, but I didn't want to say them cos all the others seem to do it so much better and I never like Chicken Lips that much (plus they're close to house alot of the time)

Idjut Boys I suppose too.

Began Cedric - Trans brooklyn express (burning hot)
Bregan cekic and tee scott - Change

you got these names all mixed up...it's Sixty-Nine b/w Change Position by Brooklyn Express, and I'm not sure about Trans brooklyn express. Though Peter Brown's Burning Love Breakdown, the bside of Do You Wanna Get Funky, is some great dubby disco.

Ronan...I don't know those new tracks, though I've met Nick, but Balaeric's too confusing a word, means too many different things to different people. Downtempo stuff, Ibiza chillout, cosmic and/or italo, ambient techno. I'm not sure if that's what you're getting at. The Cosmic Dancer comps have some great similar stuff, like the stuff that's often posted at bumrocks.com, eclectic weird 70s/80s DJ Harvey type stuff that's all really trendy right now (which is a good thing, because I love it).

I think a lot of the Disco Not Disco stuff, as well as the stuff on the Loft box-sets are probably the most obvious answers if you're looking for classics. Beyond the loft box set, the original Loft and Paradise Garage bootlegs have a lot of the great stuff as well.

check out recent 12" releases on the DC label from Padded Cell, White Light Circus, and the Emperor Machine...

For old stuff from the '80s, a lot of the b-sides of singles from West End/Prelude/Easy street had great spacey dubs.

Also that new single "You and Me" by Stranger is really great stuff in this vein. You could also just search flex.be with the term disco-dub, because that's one of the genre labels they use.

any non chicken-lips chicken-lips stuff....

the big two thousand.

the killer is Maurice fulton presents stress - My Gigolo - chicken lips remix.

jesus thats dubby. its the only dub disco track that openly freaks me out...

seek it out. its the highwater point for how far you can take an echo box.

other than that stick to the labels. with some environ and balihu stuff prettty good expecially if its a b side.

Ronan for historical purposes I'm half-tempted to suggest The Drum Club! Have you ever heard them?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 26 November 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

old -- maybe some Cloud One? a bunch of their stuff has been reissued lately ... "Atmosphere Strut" and "Funky Disco Tracks of Cloud One" are both cool ...

new -- I like that Lee Douglas 12" on Rong (Same Changes/Our Song)

Renard, Saturday, 26 November 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

also there's Kikrokos "Jungle DJ & Dirty Kate" which I think was used by Prins Thomas to make something or other (never heard his version tho)

I have most of Began Cekic's records but know little more then what I learned from that Tee Scott interview Danny did. Change Position, his version of Spank, is probably the most classic, it was bootlegged by Ballroom not so long ago, it's definately a case where its a drastically different version. I'm also partial to the hip-hop version of Another One Bites the Dust by Sugar Daddy. The instrumental just got bootlegged on the new Dark Side of Disco comp, but I love it for the rap and I tend to mix it in and out of Queen.

He was responsible for Common Sense's version of the Police's Voices in My Head that's on Disco Not Disco 1.

They do mention a Burning Hot by Brooklyn Express. I've never seen that one.

Another favorite which seems pretty easy to find in NYC as I know a bunch of people who have it is Hollywood Party by Brooklyn Express. I even have 2 copies because the first one I found was a bit scratched up.

we'd all be remiss if "For the Love of Money" wasn't mentioned, by none other than the Disco Dub Band.

Teh Reverso 68 mic of Manhead's Doop (I'm afraid the only Referso 68 tack I've heard) is basically a lift of a track of Japanese proto techno band Logic's album. ( I think the Logic track is Domino Dance but can't remember). Evidently genius disco remixer Tom Moulton did a whole album of dubby disco, but I've never been able to find it....
