I am listening to "America's #1 Band" right now, and goddamn if that title ain't the plain and simple truth.

Atomic Mr. Basie is the shit. Pretty much the definition of swing.

I gotta double lp on Roulette that I haven't been able to listen to for years, since my turntable up and croaked. It's a side each of the Basie band from different eras with different vocalists - Tony Bennett, Sara Vaughn, Joe Williams, and Billy Eckstine. I have it in my lap right now, and desperately want to cue up the Eckstine side, but can't.

Waaaaaaah.

I have been listening to Count Basie all week! I saw the Count Basie Orchestra after Count Basie had died and it was even wonderful then! My dad introduced me to Tom Harrell that night and I thought that he was brain damaged, but he only talked that way because of the medication he took for his schizophrenia. I found this out later. Tom Harrell is fucking amazing.

I don't agree, but Gunther Schuller has a real interesting dissenting opinion on Basie's piano playing--he thinks Basie uses the same devices over and over and is mannered in his minimalism--in his "Swing Era" book. I don't agree, really, but I see his point. The Basie autobio with Albert Murray is a classic piece of American prose, too.
