By Mike Barnes.
At their best, JOMF are an advertisement for constantly evolving, ego free improv. The large pool of musicians in this floating collective mitigates against any particular stylistic signature, but their shared telepathy allows players to relate to each other without getting in the way - they interact like the spinning parts of a huge, slowly rotating mobile. There are a number of songs on this set , and at times jackie-o get somewhere close to free folk, as on the opener, "Nice One", except the free elements and the folk elements don't really coerce. The song starts with a simple acoustic guitar chord sequence and equallys imple vocal lines from Tom Greenwood and Honey Owens, eventually ceding to freeform clank with the instruments all clustering around and enquiring of one another at the close.
"Rockaway", meanwhile is so steeped in ennui, it sounds like Jason Pierce attempting one of his bluesy pleas to a higher agencey straight after being woken from an afternoon nap. Over a couple of chords , Greenwoods vocals slound flat and throaway, while some sweet slide guitarsings in the background. "Hey Mr Sky" plods off on another set of obvious chord changes, with some distant squalling guitar doing little to break the torpor. These songs simply aren't that great and they keep the group earthbound. A relief , then, when the instrumental "Spirits" arrives, its 16 minute foray into the outer limits peaking with the sound of a thousand guitars.
Alarmingly, the following track "Good Morning Kaptain" is billed at 45'50", but thankfully its 40 minutes shorter than the erroneous timing. Its a decent enough song, with grumbling cello and wah-guitars snarling at their fey acoustic counterparts. Currents of double bass, guitars, tuned percussion and electronics (at least thats what it sounds like) surge through "loud and mighty" , while owens vocals waft across like ectoplasm before forming into something more corporeal. Closing proceedings , the churning "The Louder Roared The Sea" is becalmed by a snippet of song at its close. It feels like JOMF integration of song into their unpredictable , enigmatic sonics is successfully achieved right at the last. But maybe that was the point?

On its major-label debut, Jackie O Motherfucker demonstrates an affinity for distorted swagger.
How many bands have reinvented themselves as successfully as Jackie O Motherfucker? A Bar Mitzvah-like smorgasboard of sounds is offered up here, from the hushed "Mr. Awesome" to the Springsteenian fury of "Keeper of the Gloom." The lyrics are darker and more introspective than on earlier releases. What a long, strange trip it's been for Jackie O Motherfucker.
Jackie O Motherfucker is unsafe at any speed. The masters of muscular yearning are back. Some things never change.
