Why must Jermain Dupri, Missy Elliot, B. Diddy, DJ Clue, etc. talk all over every song they produce?

It's SOOO FUCKING ANNOYING. I'm listening to "Shake it Off" by Mariah (guilty pleasure) and like every few bars this fucking idiot Jermain Dupri says some trite, pointless line ("everybody just bounce!" "that's hot" "yeah!" " I like dat" "uh huh" "uh huh yeah") JESUS H. CHRISTMAS.

THE PRODUCERS HAVE ALREADY WON

You can just list your musical/music-related pet peeves here.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 27 November 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

I hate it when drummers do that thing where they hit the stick against something. SO LOUD. UGH.

Loltenant in the Lmaoist Rofflution (Matt Chesnut), Sunday, 27 November 2005 03:10 (twenty years ago)

Dude DJ Clue?

deej.. (deej..), Sunday, 27 November 2005 05:31 (twenty years ago)

I hate this too, except for Lil Jon. His enthusiasm doesn't reek of vanity.

'Twan (miccio), Sunday, 27 November 2005 06:16 (twenty years ago)

But just think of how much time and energy this saves you! Now you don't need magazines and critics to tell you who's producing good tracks -- it says so right on the song. Also you don't have to post lame-looking threads like "track ID" or "who produced this song" or "what kind of synths were used in this song," cause right at the beginning they're all like "uhhh, yeah, this is a Squeezy P production ... rockin' the Korg Triton ... REMIX ..."

nabiscothingy, Sunday, 27 November 2005 06:45 (twenty years ago)

The earliest example of this trend is probably Dave Seville.

'Twan (miccio), Sunday, 27 November 2005 06:50 (twenty years ago)

for guys like Clue (djs) it's a way to keep other djs from copying exclusive songs off their mixtapes. for JD and Diddy, well, they want to be celebreties but haven;t got any musical talent. i don't mind when lil jon does it, but jazzie pha... ugh

'Twan hahahahahaha. It's amazing how much of a hater Seville was on Alvin -- right on his tracks!

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 27 November 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

Confusing mixtape DJs for producers? lame.

deej.. (deej..), Sunday, 27 November 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

Clue doesn't belong on the list technically speaking of course, but I think the more general question is "are you annoyed when an artist/producer/DJ interjects" - it's kind of an interesting phenomenon, insofar as "interjection" implies that there's this sorta Platonic form of the song within which the "yeah!"s and "hey!"s and so forth don't exist - which is a pretty antiquated assumption, though it's not like the case can't still be made for it.

Plenty of musics offer precedent for this but it's never been more general than it is now, I don't think. I do find it really off-putting, myself - to this day, Puffy's "why?" in the chorus of "Big Poppa" sets my teeth on edge, just because it's so out-of-place and pointless.

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Sunday, 27 November 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

When I was a kid, I was enamored with Puff's adlibs. Sometimes they really complement the performer's efforts. And I'm always a little bit amused when he approves a beat -- "I like this."
Slow down son, you're killin em.

Robert L Bell (Robert L Bell), Sunday, 27 November 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

In a way (despite the fact that he put together a band I would have liked to hear), this is why I'm glad Mos Def's Black Jack Johnson album never came out. A whole goddamn album where the first 45-60 seconds of every track are "Mos Def y'all. Rock music y'all. Mos Def y'all. Black Jack Johnson y'all." would have driven me insane. Just shut the fuck up and let Dr. Know play, you tool.

I hate when DC Talk does this.

flying around the room, Sunday, 27 November 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

And what about that "sampling"? People who can't play their own instruments are lazy jerks who need to get some remedial music classes. Hey, the Ramones could barely play, but that didn't stop them! And the Beatles were great because they played their own instruments and wrote their own songs! You know who else I like? That group Boston. They produced their own music inside a tiny speaker invented by their guitarist, who went to M.I.T.! He was no dummy, and he could play his own instrument! Not like these "rappers" who can't play any instruments at all! Oh, the whole thing makes me so upset! I'm going to go listen to the Eagles and then have a nap. Goodbye!

The Obligatory Randomgoogler, Sunday, 27 November 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

it's obvious why mix tape djs do that and it sux

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Sunday, 27 November 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

I think the point is less that DJ's don't play their own instruments / need to keep out of the 'pure' song etc., than that those interjections are often lame, boring, repetitive, pointless, irritatingly smug, etc., and that often they seem to actually interfere with the groove rather than make it more awesome.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Sunday, 27 November 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

Erm... "B. Diddy"?

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 27 November 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

um, no - clue produces. you might well suspect it's with the other guys in his desert storm crew but nonetheless he's put his name to loads of rnb rmxs over the years, and especially in 2005; the oldskooly rmxs of faith evans 'mesmerized' with nas and snoop and mariah's 'we belong together' with jada and styles stand out in particular. whatever.

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Monday, 28 November 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

Still haven't decided if I like this or not: Sound of the Pirates 2 (and possibly 1 - haven't heard it) attempts to recreate the atmosphere of a pirate radio session with DJ hype / chatter & RANDOM FAKE SMS BEEPS over the tracks. It took several listens before I twigged this was intentional.

jcartledge (jcartledge), Monday, 28 November 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

Yeah he produces, I was just listening to "best of me part 2" but I doubt that dude who started this thread had differentiated between mixtape tracks he'd gotten off of napster back in the day and Clue's actual productions which are numerous but hardly high-profile.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 28 November 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

Erm... "B. Diddy"?

I just overlooked it, thinking he had changed his name once again.

There was a song a few years ago that pissed me off to no end— I think it was "Shake Ya Tailfeather" where Diddy actually said something like "This is a collaboration," and then mentioned all the copyright information at the beginning of the song. That guy should be kept away from microphones.

naus (Robert T), Monday, 28 November 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

Diddy's most inanely brilliant song ID has to be on "Special Delivery (Remix)" where he decided the very CHORUS should be just him declaring "This is the remix!" and some dude going "Of Special Delivery!" I mean, you know, it's tough to get airplay these days. You want to maximize the chance that someone who hears your song will know exactly which version of it to download.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 28 November 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

the beatles first four albums had 8 originals and 6 covers.

coverband, Monday, 28 November 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

what happened to diddy making house music?

Lovelace (Lovelace), Monday, 28 November 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

The earliest example of this trend is probably Dave Seville.

I think Bob Wills beat him to it.

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 28 November 2005 04:59 (twenty years ago)

He released a couple of, erm, interesting songs with Felix.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 28 November 2005 05:38 (twenty years ago)

That interpolation in "Shake It Off" is awesome ... In general that track is very strangely mixed.

Zed Szetlian (Finn MacCool), Monday, 28 November 2005 06:47 (twenty years ago)

He released a couple of, erm, interesting songs with Felix.

this sounds like it could be either the BEST thing ever or the WORST thing ever. perhaps both, depending on my mood.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 28 November 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

I like Diddy interrupts his own rap on "I Don't Wanna Know"

'Twan (miccio), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

"He released a couple of, erm, interesting songs with Felix."

The only thing I heard was somehting me made with Deep Dish, but I cant remember it was good or not. I only heard it once and it was like 2 years ago. Man, there was supposed to be a whole album and shit. I guess it sucked so he didnt bother releasing it.

Lovelace (Lovelace), Monday, 28 November 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

>I guess it sucked so he didnt bother releasing it.

'Cause that's always stopped him in the past.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 28 November 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

I think the song with Felix is called 'Jack U' and its actually pretty entertaining.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 28 November 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

six months pass...
"Jack U" = pretty amazing.

I still find this phenomenon incredibly annoying. Everyone should just follow BANGLADESH's lead... have a signature sound that you play ONCE in every song so that we know who produced it.
