Tinny

i think most people reach for the bass boost when playing their records and cds don't they? a fuller warmer more surrounding sound maybe. but don't you think some music sounds better in an AM style, or quieter, out of crappy speakers, the bass muted and off the radar, a jumbled mid range.

i have been listening to judy garland, and also to mingus, and i've enjoyed having it partially obscured and neutered in this way on crappy stereo doing washing up. i've noticed that all my early fall albums are on crappy tapes that don't have the uberquality digital we all want these days.

is this a thinly disguised desire for nostalgia?

Do you think vinyl sounds warmer than CDs?

I've always loved the saturated tape sound, over dubbed and over dubbed, tho' this is more a midrange-bass sound, not Tinny . Boards of Canada's nostagic music uses this sound to great effect.

before i left the UK i had an old original sixties Dansette (rescued from my Great Aunts flat after she died) and i liked nothing better than sticking a stack of 45s (usually a mixture or Shangri-La's Sonny & Cher Ronettes and Lou Christie) and cranking 'em up for that authentic sixties tinny one speaker sound.......

six years pass...

When is this a good thing in music? When is this a bad thing in music?

it's a good thing when it sounds good, it's a bad thing when it sounds bad

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 00:23 (sixteen years ago)
