Yes, don't do it. Oh alright, Alan Holdsworth.

some albums that show some true genius without getting wanky (most of the time)
Billy Cobham - Spectrum
Weather Report - Black Market
The Brecker Brothers Collection vol 2. (the red one)

I recommend Steve Grossman - Some Shapes to Come. Not the easiest to locate, however.

I'll second the Billy Cobham, and add everything from the Mahavishnu Orchestra classic lineup (especially Inner-Mounting Flame!) and most of the electric Miles stuff of course. On the more modern tip, I especially like the Larry Coryell album with Tom Coster and Steve Smith from a few years back. There's a lot more good stuff of course, and probably even more bad.

Somewhat out of character for me I really like Yusef Lateef's 70s work. Jazz Fusion as a genre is almost invariably horrible, with those farting, squealing synths and that sound that's trying to be warm but just sounds cold.

Doesn't get much better than the Herbie Hancock sextet, although some will not agree with me that that's fusion.

can anyone recommend what weather report albums to check? Ive only heard a few tracks (one of which sounded like the castle levels on super mario bros with a really stiff sequenced sounding bass) thats a mate used to play out

i'm in the same boat -- Weather Report SEEMS like something I should like, but whenever I hear anything by them, I'm kinda not into it. I did just download this early live show http://bigozine2.com/roio/?p=130. Haven't listened to it yet, but it seems like it might be the ticket ...

Just get Live in Tokyo.

I can't decide if Alphonse Mouzon's "My Little Rosebud" is one of the worst things I've ever heard or one of the greatest

I have a download of an album by Mouzon, Jaco Pastorius and trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff. It's such a fascinatingly bizarre combination of players I'm somewhat afraid to check it out.

Rosebud is his take on a "country" style song

one month passes...

I discovered this band through a friend's facebook post. Slightly unfortunate band name, impressively tight, nice mix of Creed Taylorish smooth funk, fusion, afrobeat, etc. And holy shit, what a huge band, how does anyone pay a band like that these days?

ridiculous keyboard solo about halfway in

I just wrote a cover story on them (not published yet) for a Norwegian jazz magazine. I came in totally cold and wound up liking their music more than I thought I would. A lot of it is very cinematic in a Lalo Schifrin-movie-soundtrack kind of way.

david crosby is always goin on about these guys on twitter.

i hate this band. they're super popular among high school & college music students.

They have a series of albums with guest vocalists (they're normally 100% instrumental) called Family Dinner; he's on Vol. 2, which will be out soonish.

They were thrilling when I saw them live last year, but I couldn't make it through any of their records.

29 facepalms, Thursday, 3 December 2015 20:27 (ten years ago)

I can definitely see how someone would hate them, but I enjoyed the few youtube vids I watched. In part there's just a certain novelty or rarity at least to someone doing a project like this right now and actually doing it well. I hate a lot of super-tight fusion bands and I probably wouldn't be too into listening to these guys on record but would see them live.

aha i've seen this band namedropped by some musician friends but had no idea what it was, this makes sense though

ciderpress, Thursday, 3 December 2015 20:41 (ten years ago)

they definitely have a heavy music school vibe to them, like I wasn't surprised at all to find out a lot of them came out of U of North Texas

"Fresh Air" off of 'Profile' by Jan Akkerman is a really good skronky electric guitar jazz fusion track. I had been listening to Earthless earlier in the day and how the bass plays repetitive vamp lines is actually kind of similar to this old fusion track, albeit Akkerman is at a totally different level as a player. He gets all over the neck. Anyway, if you like old Mahavishnu, Return to Forever, Headhunters etc, you might like this Akkerman track (and lp).

Might need to look up some more recent Akkerman as I believe he has gone more traditional in his jazz music later in his career.

Listening to Flying Island after hearing this record on a podcast (this track was sampled on Endtroducing), and it rules. Everyone in the band is great, and times they sound extremely Tortoise.

The drummer is so sick. Apparently was in Material and Gong for a minute.
