ELIGIBILITY:
Albums:
Album elligibility will be treated very leniently--albums from late last year that didn't get their due until this year, or weren't released in your country until this year, or have leaked but won't be technically released until later this year, will all count. That includes Arcade Fire which wasn't released in UK until February, upcoming Girls Aloud etc
Compilations and DJ mixes will be eligible as will any reissues which differ significantly from the original issue e.g Cure reissues.
Songs:
If a song appeared for the first time this year on any format (a/b-side, album track, comp track), it is eligible. If it was released on an album last year but not as a single until this year, it is eligible. If it was released as a single last year but did not chart in your home country until this year, it is eligible. A song is not eligible, however, if it appeared on a compilation for the first time this year but was already available previously. If you are voting for a remix it will be marked separately from any other version e.g Franz Ferdinand's Do you want to will be marked separately from the Max Tundra mix, Errol Alkan mix etc...
Votes/Scoring:
You'll be voting for a maximum of 20 albums and 20 songs. The scoring will be :
#1--20 points#2--19 points#3--18 points#4--17 points#5--16 points...#10--11 points...#20--1 point
Lists must be of no more than 20, any more will be ignored. Unordered lists will get 10.5 points each.
BLURBS:
I'd like to get a substantial number of blurbs for this, even if not every album is covered--I think it'd be a lot more enjoyable to read or whatever. So what I'd like you all to do is that when you vote, put a star or something next to albums you'd be willing to write a small blurb for (or a large one, if you feel like getting all deep). If you're cool with writing a blurb for anything, you godlike human being, just make a note of that somewhere. If you don't want to write blurbs, then that's fine, your list won't count for less or anything. Then, after the list is tabulated, I'll ask the people who volunteered to write blurbs about albums that made the list. They'll have a week to do so.
DEADLINES:
Deadline for lists: December 31Deadline for blurbs: January 5
That's more than a month to put your list together, I think that's enough time. If you all need more time, I can give you some, but not too much lest the list run into the new year. I'll try to get the poll running just after the new year.
IN THIS THREAD:
I'd appreciate it if people didn't post their lists in this, or any other thread. If people disagree with me than OK, but I think that the exit polling that took place with the 90s polls sorta killed some of the mystery about the poll, and I think it'd be better going in without knowing exactly what everyone voted for.
However, what I do encourage in this thread, is some serious pimping. Three weeks is a long time, and I know that I at least would love some suggestions of albums or songs that I might have missed that I can download before sending in my list. Don't post too many as to not overwhelm people with suggestions, but if there are a couple songs, comps or albums that people feel have gone underrecognized, then by all means, recommend away -- bonus points for Yousendit links!
Also in this thread, if you have any questions regarding eligibility or any suggestions regarding eligibility or voting, I'd be happy to take them.
Thanks to the Good Dr Bill who's 2004 guidance I've pinched and amended.

last year in total over 450 albums got at least 1 vote. that is the reality of the fragmentation of modern music culture[s].

I never really understood that, though, since if anything already having a year-end list prepared for another source should make it easier to vote in this since it just takes a simple C&P.

It baffles me how people have such reluctance to make lists. Then again I'm a loser who spends the entire year compiling the songs and records I really love and pruning it so by like November I'm good to go when editors and ILM come calling for a top 20 or a top 25 ot a top 10.

I think there may be a reluctance to enter this because when it's compared to NME/Q/insert publication it may not be as 'special' as you imagine an ILM list to be.

Despite readin through the rules, I'm still a bit confused. The MIA album was this year, wasn't it? So I could vote for any track off Arular, including Galang, even though that came third last year when it was a single?
Also, there are very few albums that I would want to vote for, and the difference between how much I like my first choice and how much I like my third choice is massive - could I, for example, put nothing in third to fifteenth places, and then chose a sixteenth place (so that my third choice only gets 5 points instead of 18), or would that be a bit mental?
― Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 5 December 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)
As for leaving a big gap between your choices, yes that would be mental, but if you want to do it that way, that's your choice.

-- Billy Dods
This is exactly how I feel and came up with a similar idea. Always around the beginning of December I almost only play stuff from that calendar year, hopefully just to make the most actuate list that I can but always still miss stuff.
So this year I'm doing 'Year In Review' on my other music message board that I post at. These albums aren't obscure records or the more popular ones from 2005. These are albums that might get overlooked unless you remember to play them again for list making time or (my real hope) convince someone to seek out new music before the end of the year. I make my initial post with a blurb from somewhere else and then the members of the board weigh in with their thoughts of that album. Seems to be working, for instance M83 was today’s topic (rather weak response to this one), with members liking it but haven't played it in ages and will revisit. Not going to try and incorporate that idea on this ILM thread but thought it was strange that we had a similar idea.
Since this is also the links thread (our 'Best Album Of' threads are kicking some major ass): http://www.obner.org/bb/
Obner's 2005 results are not due until January 15, which is perfect for me because I never have it done by the end of the year. Always need an extra sometimes two week to finalize my list and since I don't have a deadline the end of December doesn't really mean anything for finalizing that years music. I will get this off to you on time but my official list will probably have some slight modifications.

I just heard this for the first (and second, and third...) time last night and I think it'sthe best thing evah track of the year: Hell - Follow You (Dominik Eulberg Mix). Wow.
Doom-laden vocal track of the year: Lopazz Blood (released Dec 04 is that allowed?)
Why wasn't I at G.A.Y. on Saturday night I just saw the photos in the Sun album of the year: Girls Aloud.
Actually, I haven't listened to many albums this year beyond the obvious ones, so get "pimping".
ps LCD -Movement came out as a single too early in 2004 to qualify, I reckon.

i have to say, my lists are a bit odd: almost exactly what you'd expect from a 30-year-old erstwhile indie kid and synthpop fetishist with a love of anthemic rock, except with a touch of grinding prog-metal and some, er, "post-folk".
anyway. e-mail sent. 'rah. now for that wank pie.

― Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Saturday, 31 December 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)
Tonight I was at a New Year's party full of meta-goths (I don't know what to call them anymore, they're not so anachronistic anymore, they look more like sleek characters from a William Gibson novel like Idoru). A band was playing loud originals that sounded vaguely like Depeche Mode, and I felt nothing, even during an odd cover of Phil Collins' "In The Air." But as soon as they stopped and the DJ started playing early 80s era New Order and such, the party really came alive. People danced, I danced, guzzled champagne, made out with my girlfriend, and felt waves of memories wash over me associated with each song. I'm not a huge nostalgist -- I spend most of my time listening to new music. But I wonder, will songs this year, and last year, and next year, have the same impact on me in the next ten, twenty, thirty years?
I guess there's a "sweet spot" of time between the age of about twelve and twenty two when everything is more dramatically burned into your brain and music is the soundtrack of the firsts in your life. Some of the songs we somewhat calculatingly jockey into positions to make some master cannon list may or may not be the soundtrack of some 15 year-old's life right now. Are they as good?
I dunno. I'm getting old. I'm drunk. Happy new year!
