So I love the Imogen Heap album but don't want to buy it because of the copy protection, is Imogen just out of luck?

Or is this relatively non-evil copy protectiion and I shouldn't worry about it?

no, it's the bad copy protection, steal it instead

Please DON'T steal this album - it is an amazing creative feat, IMHO, and Imogen has worked really hard to get this album distributed in both the US and U.K. - Also, it's not like you're stealing from some "big corporation" that you can justify doesn't need it - in this case, you are really stealing from her, much more directly.

Just my two cents.

without getting into "stolen," i of course have already downloaded it -- that's how i know i love it and therefore know i want to buy it.

If only the record industry was forced to read this thread over and over for two years.

The copy protection on this disc is not the rootkit one. Instead, it installs files onto your computer WITHOUT your consent - no initial license agreement, just disc in -> starts installing shit. THEN it gives you a license agreement, but even if you decline it, the files stay on your system. Ridiculous.

Fortunately the whole thing can be circumvented by the hold-down-the-shift key trick (not so sure about disabling AutoPlay - I had all my CD autoplay options set do "Do nothing" or "Open folder containing files" and it started installing stuff anyway). I did a System Restore, held down shift, and ripped it all to MP3 no problem.

Your best option is to buy the UK version. No malware, Imogen gets the money.

reddening (reddening), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

Steal it. It's totally justifiable in the circumstances. Furthermore, Sony ought to reimburse the artists for lost profits in this case. They can certainly afford to. That said... http://www.bobjude.co.uk/psptubes/animals/4.gif

Alternatively, buy the English version as reddening advises, better still download now & enjoy, but write a flaming angry (yet reasonable) letter to Sony customer services & see if you can get a favour from them.

Send them a copy of this. Also tell them if they were treated the way the FBI treats your general cybermiscreant who is caught manipulating things on your machine in a malicious way without genuinely informed consent (instead of being given a BYE because of big corporate status), they would be looking at jail.
