are there any vocal versions of - or in fact a lyric to - 'well, you needn't'?

by who(m)?

Thelonius Monk? I never heard one. I think I heard some humming on the track though, but I'm not sure that counts.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

That doesn't look right: Thelonious. Sorry, Sphere.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

I cheated and googled. Jamie Cullum has done a vocal version. I have no desire to hear it.

I don't wanna hear it. But I don't wanna hear a vocal version of "Green Dolphin Street" either.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

But he got it from here, where it's called 'It's Over Now'.

Oh yeah, she is known for singing Monk tunes but I haven't heard it. I usually don't like when lyrics are added after the fact to a jazz tune, like "All Blues," to name one. No doubt ILM can provide me with a laundry list of counterexamples.

I know what you're saying, and once you hear those versions, it makes it hard to ever listen to the music without getting a bunch of dodgy lyrics stuck in your head.

"In Walked Bud", for starters.

I find it impossible to hear "well you needn't" without singing its title each time the chorus comes round

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

"In Walked Bud", for starters.
I prefer "Through With Buzz."

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

tracer this is why i asked!! i like to mix things up with the occasional "well, you oughn't" or "well, you're wrong" tho

tom west (thomp), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

Every time the chorus comes around time? Now you've got me singing it every other bar- "bah-da-da-da-da, well you needn't."

hm!

you're talking so sweet. well you needn't
you say you won't cheat. well you needn't
you're tapping your feet. well you needn't
it's over now, it's over now

you're dressing with class, well you needn't
you're holding your sass, well you needn't
you think you're a gas, well you needn't
it's over now, it's over now

it's over now, it's over now
you had your fun so take a bow
you oughta know, you lost the glow
the beat is low, the shadows draw
the lights are low, it's time to go, let's close the show down
you're taking off weight, well you needn't
you're looking just great. well you needn't
you're setting the bait. well you needn't
it's over now, it's over now

haven't heard the Carmen McRae but a couple years ago I saw Savion Glover tap-dance to "In Walked Bud" and it was mind-blowing great.

I was just coming in to mention that McCrae album. I have it, it's pretty good, the lyrics aren't awful or anything (imo, obviously), but when I want to hear Monk I usually don't bother with cover versions and just slap on "Thelonious in Action" or something.

Now you know what would make a great vocal number with the right lyrics? I've been saying "Reincarnation of a Love Bird" for years now.

five months pass...
Got this from "the vocal real book", i like it pretty much:

You want to get high, well you needn´t
Just take your feet off of the ground
You don´t want to loose the connection
`tween going up and getting down.

You never get something for nothing
You have to give something away
Your whole world is constantly changing
From day to night and night to day

From black and white
And white to grey
With all your might
You try to stay

On top of it all
But its round like a ball
you slip up and you fall
or it pops and that´s all

You want to get high, well you needn´t
Just keep yourself under control
Step out of your mind for a minute
And feel the distances you go

I hate to sound ignorant...

THERE'S A VOCAL VERSION OF ALL BLUES?! Why!?

Harrison Barr (Petar), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

How about that Jon Hendricks version of Freddie the Freeloader, where he and his crew put lyrics to all of solos from KoB? It's impressive and kinda creepy at the same time.

three years pass...

Speaking of whom, I was informed earlier this week that Jon Hendricks wrote most if not all of the lyrics for that Carmen McRae album, and just now heard that version of "In Walked Bud" with Jon and Thelonious.

Wikipedia informs me that Jon wrote half the lyrics and Abbey Lincoln wrote the other half.

one year passes...

Tonight I had the honor of seeing soon-to-be-nonagenarian Jon Hendricks transmogrify "Crepuscule With Nellie" from a tune into a song for the first time.
