I was amazed to discover recently that half of Kiss were Jewish. Who else were you astonished to discover are Heebs?

Daniel, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jews in showbiz?! What are the odds of that! And what are the odds of such marketing geniuses (they made lotsa money) as Kiss NOT being Jewish?????

Crazy man crazy!

Or should I say ...

Meshuga man meshuga!

Shhhhh, don't tell anyone, but I thing that maybe Al Jolson might be a Heeb.

J Sutcliffe, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Now that I think about it, remember how each Kiss member had his own cartoon-cosmic identity; there was Star Man, Count Chocula, Cat Boy and, er, whatever the hell the other one was supposed to be. Wonder why they didn't have a Star of David Boy or Menorrah Man. Guess that wouldn't sell to, you know, the kids in god-fearing Middle America.

J Sutcliffe, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gene Simmons was actually born in Israel, and his real name is Chaim Witz.

How do I know this? I HATE Kiss. Only dorkwads like Kiss.

DV, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw a book called something like "the book of Jewish rock stars" and it listed loads of rock/pop stars who are Jewish in some sense. However, it didn't say how Jewish they were, so it might be that Beck once drew a picture of a star of David and that was enough for him, or maybe not.

I was thinking about Eli Wallach yesterday, and how great a Jewish New Yorker was at playing a racist stereotype of a Mexican in an Italian made film.

DV, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

J Sutcliffe has a bee in his bonnet doesn't he? I was just saying that I wasn't aware that they were Jewish. Oh and by the way, Kiss were indeed dreadful.

daniel, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bee in my bonnet? Wuzza buzza .... more like a liter of sangria. Ay cocula.

I think anyone who's ever seen Paul Stanley and whathisname - Cheez Wiz, photos or TV, can say with absolute certainty that they look as Jewish as, oh, the cartoon stereotypes on old Deutscher propaganda posters.

J Sutcliffe, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ofra Haza.

DeRayMi, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hadn't you spotted the similarity between Kiss in make-up and Krusty the Clown?

Snotty Moore, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well Daniel, seeing as you asked....it's time to clarify and classify. (and spot the unlikely-in-a-Jewish-thread lyric reference there, pop-pickers !)

Ones that even my Mum is aware of: Bob Dylan, Len Cohen, Lou Reed, Neil Diamond, Marc Bolan, Phil Spector, Bacharach and David, Carole King and Gerry Goffin, Leiber and Stoller, Jon Moss of Culture Club

Ones that NME readers are probably aware are Jewish: Justine Frischman, Louise Wener of sleeper, Stephen Malkmus, the Ramones, Chris Stein, Beck (half, apparently), the Beastie Boys, Kiss

Ones that NME readers may not realise are J-people: Rachel from S Club 7, Lenny Kravitz, Joe Strummer

Ones I'm still not sure about: Iggy Pop ? Sonic Youth ? Jason Kay as in Jamiroquai ?

I can't think of any that surprised this "Kike" in particular.

What about Jewish managers ? Now there's a list - Beatles, Stones, Led Zep, ELO, Small Faces.... Darren

Darren, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nena is not a Jew.

Colin Meeder, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jay Kay of Jamiroquai (who really should be added to the Duel! list) is indeed Jewish. My friend belongs to a Jewish youth movement and he informs me that Mr. Kay was a former member. I think they've got the pictures to prove it, too.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Erm.. Colin, I never said Nena was ! I just made an unconscious lyrical reference and then saw its incongruity, what with her being... oh, let's just forget it, eh ?

Apparently, Craig David (now there's a 80s Barmitzvah invite name if there ever was one) is half-Jewish on his dad's side, by the way (as is David Beckham).

Darren, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is david lee roth jewish?

g, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sure is.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Princess Superstar, Dee Snyder, Slash, Jack Black, David Berman, Ira Kaplan, Paula Abdul, Barry Manilow, Perry Farrell (and Jane's drummer Stephen Perkins), Joey Ramone, the late Mark Sandman, Hillel Slovak, Max Weinberg, Weird Al, Mama Cass. Oy Veh: Adam Duritz, Chris Robinson, Jakob Dylan. Leaonard Cohen is Jewish when doing that Buddhist thing.

Brian Wilson is not Jewish. Neither is Stephen Malkmus.

And I'm not sure why it matters, anyway.

hstencil, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah - I thought Malkmus was a Swedish name. He joked about calling his self-titled album "Swedish Reggae".

o. nate, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Quick note to hstencil: it's true, it doesn't matter a jot. It's mere curiosity.

http://www3.timeoutny.com/newyork/thevolume/2009/05/ticket-alert-loud-fast-jews/

Early punk rock was an overwhelmingly Jewish phenomenon, both in its location (New York City), participants (Joey Ramone, Richard Hell, Malcolm McLaren), forefathers (Lou Reed, Jonathan Richman, Bob Dylan) and attitude (wordy, media-savvy, anxiety-ridden). From an admittedly myopic perspective, the genre completed rock & roll’s natural curve—what began with Elvis culminated in the Ramones—while providing a loud, early finale to the rambunctious Jewish-American art experience of the 20th century. On Thursday, June 11, four Jewish punks—Tommy Ramone, Lenny Kaye, Handsome Dick Manitoba and Blondie’s Chris Stein—will address these issues at “Loud Fast Jews!” The panel, arranged by Guitar World editor Richard Bienstock, takes place at Chelsea’s YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. (Apparently, CBGB was unavailable.) Tickets, which cost $18 ($12 if you can successfully impersonate a student), are available at smarttix.com. Older punks still grappling with the Internet, call 212-868-4444.-Jay Ruttenberg

Dylan a forefather of punk?

Mark, Wednesday, 10 June 2009 02:38 (sixteen years ago)

Funny, Handsome Dick Manitoba doesn't sound like a Jewish name.

YIVO Institute for Jewish Research was the venue for many of the early punk shows

I think I posted about Steven Lee Beeber's book "The Heebie-Jeebies at CBGB's: A Secret History of Jewish Punk," on one of the books about music thread. I kinda liked it.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 10 June 2009 17:50 (sixteen years ago)

Cool! Didn't realize so many punk forefathers were Jewish. Jonathan Richman is too, right?

I was unaware that Neil Diamond was Jewish (well duh now that I think about it); I am having a hard time with this.

I remember being surprised that Shatner was Jewish (for whatever reason) while I had always assumed Nimoy was Jewish.

It doesn't bear thinking about, Diamond seemed like someone you could rely on.
