* -- some may (rightly or wrongly) quibble about inclusion of these

xhuxk, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

I'll quibble about King Tubby and the KLF, both brilliant, albeit more conceptually in the case of the latter. Chuck, have you ever read Jimmy Cauty and Bill Drummond's book "The Manual?" Seems up your alley.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

I have an album King Tubby did with Augustus Pablo Rockers Meets King Tubby In A Firehouse which I like.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

heard KLF on KTU a few days ago.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

I just like their *White Room* CD; no interest in their more ambient stuff (or their corny concepts, or their book, though thanks...)

xhuxk, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

You should try Chill Out, it's rather amusing...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Anyway:

Edward Ka-Spel -- the Syd Barrett with a career who hasn't gone insane yet. (This is a compliment.) He works brilliantly both with and without the Legendary Pink Dots but without he seems all the more fractured.

Kid 'n' Play -- it's frickin' Kid 'n' Play! Who doesn't like them!

Kreidler I should listen more to. Same with Konk.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

J. Kane as in Depth Charge? what has he done under his real name.

Karkowski's an odd one. old H3O associate. some of his stuff bores me, but the two Word as Will collabs are overlooked. power ambient? always wanted to hear his solo 3xCD3.

every solo Ka-Spel album is essential in its own way, i think. but i'm koo-koo for all things LPD.

haven't listened to Kreidler in years. should. they were cool.

loxmyth (echoinggrove), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

KLF's corny concepts? What happened to your sense of humor?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

In the unlikely event I form a band The Corny Concepts will now be on the shortlist of names.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

I really like the reissue of Ka-Spel's '80s stuff I got recently (Laugh China Doll), but couldn't figure out the appeal of the more recent CD of his I got sent; that one totally bored me, to be honest.

Heard *Chill Out* once, eons ago; didn't do much at all for me at the time, but who knows? Maybe if I heard it now I'd find it more amusing. (As for corny concepts, I dunno, seemed to me they were just stating the obvious, and turning into dumb postmodernism platitudes. Not *funny* enough for my sense of humor. But maybe I was wrong...)

The Jonathan Kane solo CD came out on Table of the Elements in October, I think. Excellent blues drone that goes on and on forever.

xhuxk, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

I think I actually reviewed a KLF album for the Voice at the time, along with, I dunno, Coldcut and Todd Terry and maybe S'Express or somebody -- all of whom I liked, but none of whom struck me as all that original, since when *isn't* music a collage of other music, you know? No need to make such a big deal of it. But at the same time, they all (esp Terry and S'Express) sounded good, so what did I care?

xhuxk, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Bill Kirchen was the longtime guitarist for Commander Cody. I just saw him a few months ago, and he still cranks out a mighty fine night of honky-tonk country, rockabilly and barroom rock on an incredibly battered Telecaster.

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Proof of my love on ILM for Edward Ka-Spel:

This is the Edward Ka-Spel thread

xhuxk, wonder which recent one you're referring to. I was underwhelmed by "O'Er A Shalabastyr Tyde" and the new "O Darkness" LP is meh. So it could have been either. Most of Ka-Spel's records are really great, though.

Also Z Karkowski=hella noise. Gotta love that.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

yeah, Ka-Spel has lost me a little since Red Letters and The Blue Room. too many hour-long collages and unwaranted ltd. eds. his solo discog is not helped by many of those early titles being umpteen variations on the 'china doll' theme. the very best for my money are Khataclimici China Doll - AKA AaAhzyd China Doll II and, with Heemann in the mix, pretty much a dry run for Mimir, and the classic Tanith and the Lion Tree, which he has never topped. but the pair of eclectic City of Heartbreak and Needles CDs may be all the solo Ed K any casual fan really needs.

different J Kane. the old Swans guy, not J.S. "DC" Kane. i'll check this out. ToTE.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

> wonder which recent one you're referring to<

*A Long Red Ladder To the Moon*, apparently. (Is that actually recent stuff? It seemed to be, from the liner notes, but I'm sure no expert.)

xp!

xhuxk, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

I've written about Koenjihyakkei here (and reviews at Pfork), and I certainly hope that their release on Skin Graft gets them a bigger audience. fwiw, I actually pitched about them to the Voice, but the email bounced back

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

(and there is a thread about koenji on the noize board)

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Try again, Dominique! (Our filters can be fishy here sometimes.)

(Ha ha, I avoid the noise board, and I'm sure they like it that way.)

xhuxk, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

all of whom I liked, but none of whom struck me as all that original, since when *isn't* music a collage of other music, you know?

if I remember correctly, and I was young, the advent of affordable sampling technologies in the mid to late 80s was a pretty big deal.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Tell that to Double Dee and Steinski (or Grandmaster Flash) (or, um, the Beatles doing "I Am the Walrus," or Charles Ives, or Buchannon and Goodman.) (On the other hand, I totally agree. It WAS a big deal. It just didn't necessarly *sound* like one to me at the time.)

xhuxk, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

RE: Ka-Spel's "Long Red Ladder", yes that is the newest. I'm waiting on a vinyl pressing that has 3 extra sides of music.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Doulbe Dee and Steinski are directly in the lineage that lead to M/A/R/R/S, Coldcut, S'express etc. In the late 80s there was an explosion of this type of sampling, which obviously has precedents, but wasn't easy or affordable in the same way. It may not have sounded like a big deal to you at the time, but you remember the law suits, the press? The MTV special on "sampling"?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

I saw Zbigniew Karkowski playing in a duo with Merzbow, it was insanely loud and made my ears hurt. Just when I thought it couldn't get any more painful they'd hit some new frequency and destroyed a bit more of my hearing. Highly enjoyable! Also, he looks like someone's dad.

Koenjihyakkei have been on a steady decline since their amazing first album if you ask me. Supposedly their new one veers more towards Canturbury prog rather than Zeuhl, but I'm not sure I can be bothered any more.

The one Boris Kovac album I have is great - east european folk-prog-modern composition, for want of a better description. Don't know about la campanelle though.

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

>you remember the law suits, the press?<

Sure! (Not all press *matters*, though, obviously. One of the things the press does is look for "news" where there isn't any. Not saying that happened in *this* particular case. But I'm just saying...)

> The MTV special on "sampling"? <

Nope, never saw it! But that doesn't mean it never happened!!

>he looks like someone's dad.<

Whose? (Actually, though, so do I!)

xhuxk, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

And anyway, I was PART of the press that wrote about that stuff (see above.) I just didn't write what everybody else wrote, I don't think.

xhuxk, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

that new jonathan kane is as good as bonkers candy was in the 80's.
you need it.
