Got this in the mail yesterday:

Echo & Reverb: Fabricating Space in Popular Music Recording, 1900-1960, by Peter Doyle (Wesleyan University Press). It's all about the various ways people created effects pre-stereo, obviously; chapters include "'Blue Shadows On The Trail': Space And Place In The Imagined West," "'Off The Wall': Blues Recording At Sun And Chess Studios, 1947-1954" and "'Train I Ride...': Rock 'n' Roll Echo." I'm taking audio engineering classes right now, so this is totally fascinating to me.
