I never thought much about the song "James Dean" one way or the other before it came on the radio in a car that I was in w/ a non music geek friend. He just started losing it at lines like "James Dean, James Dean/see him on the silver screen" and "too fast to live, too young to die/bye bye". It is truly like something Tim Heidecker would sing at an On Cinema Oscars special.

xp they sound like temporary dummy lyrics that were kept in because when it came to record, Frey and Henley were like “I’ve got nothing.”

I can’t understand how they were so coked up and yet produced some of the most lifeless sleepy music of the 70s

Probably the energy ran out somewhere around take 78...though I had a similar question about why Fassbinder movies are so slow (not lifeless or sleepy though).

Eagles start 2026 making history. Today, they become the first band to earn Quadruple Diamond certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for sales of more than 40 million units of Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975, which remains the best-selling album of all time in the U.S. Additionally, the band’s legendary album, Hotel California, has been re-certified 28x Platinum by the RIAA, scoring the third best-selling album of all time.
