Can the value of an artist or group be gauged by how often they are mentioned in the lyrics or titles of other people's records?

Obvious e.g. is Elvis, "saw the ghost of Elvis" in Mark Cohn's Walking In Memphis, or alternatively the Wonder Stuff's Never Loved Elvis. But what about Johnny Marr?

"he reminded you of Johnny, before he went Electronic" in Belle & Sebastian's Seymour Stein,

"You saved for a bass guitar, you knew you'd made a mistake when you first saw Marr" from Camera Obscura's Pen & Notebook and

(stupid e.g. alert) "Johnny Marr he plays guitar" from Tribe of Toffs' John Kettley is a Weatherman!

Sounds like a cheap cop of an old Sonny Curtis (ex-Buddy Holly & The Crickets) non-hit from 1964 that I have (plus it's autographed by the man himself):

"You can't go far without a guitar/unless you're Ringo Starr".

The Fall/ Mark E Smith are mentioned in song lyrics of: Belle & Sebastian, Barbara Manning, Pavement, I Ludicrous, Jazz Butcher, Tocotronic. But I don't think this, in itself, indicates they have any value.

Mark E Smith turns up in a book ('England All Over' by Joseph Gallivan) as a voice of reason. Have any other er, musicians turned up in fiction?

I can't believe someone mentioned Tocotronic.

Classic I, Ludicrous lyric:

I read about a band in South East 23
I thought it was me I thought it was me
Riding around on a 68 bus
I thought it was us, I thought it was us
I phoned Steve Lamacq and said who do you mean
He said Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine
