What do we think of the DFA Holiday mix

I like it a lot. Not sure I get what he's on about. But this is good. THOUGHTS. INSIGHT. Insert those here.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

i think it's their best mix by far although i wish it didn't end on the soulwax "daft punk" mix, which i don't like much. i wrote some more thoughts on the DFA thread.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

the "Tribulations" / "Daft Punk" ending is the best part.

And yeah, this is probably their best mix so far (much less awkward than the third disc on DFA2) but I still have a soft spot for Dance to the Underground

For such a (rightly) positive review, I'm not sure why that pfork score is so middling. It's at least a point lower than it deserves.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

See I'm not sure I buy the review's "The 48-minute run moves steady but stays still, if that makes sense," "...which makes Holiday something of a perfect, propitious calm."

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

i think that the pitchfork writers don't have much say in the number ratings on the reviews they write.

lf, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

I think that's true across the board.
I wrote a few reviews for V1ce under a psuedonym and they changed my ratings.

Is Nick Sylvester the only person allowed to write about the DFA? Does he have a desk at their office yet?

Hit It, Rockapella! (rockapella), Thursday, 1 December 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

how is a 7.5 middling doctor billd

also surprised youd even like this, as someone who's ostensibly always antagonized by a records DANCE FACTOR

at least we agree on the muzik mix

Nick Sylvester, Thursday, 1 December 2005 05:36 (twenty years ago)

As I said on the mix cds of the year thread, I think this is ace ace ace, probably my favourite single DFA disc (if that makes sense) yet. I like how dancey and er (relatively) "smooth" it is actually.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 1 December 2005 06:44 (twenty years ago)

i think that the pitchfork writers don't have much say in the number ratings on the reviews they write.

writers determine ratings, and about 95% of the time they do it without any input from an editor.

It's not middling for a regular review, but for the fairly glowing review you gave, it was a surprisingly low rating. Wasn't a knock.

I really can't imagine where you get this from (or what it means, even). I've certainly never said anything even remotely close to resembling this.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 1 December 2005 07:07 (twenty years ago)

7.5 is a flat C in the US academic analog

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

admittedly i might be winging that off your juan maclean + rapture playing god pieces, which seemed to bemoan (at least to me) the parts of those records that weren't at XXX bpm

Nick Sylvester, Thursday, 1 December 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

1. If that was true, why would I be antagonized by this record's DANCE FACTOR? Wouldn't I be overjoyed at this record's lack of a NON-DANCE FACTOR?

2. Those PG pieces were more experimental than anything else ("what if these albums were just XXX bpm throughout?"). I love both Echoes and Less Than Human as they are (except for "Heaven," which is still possibly the worst thing The DFA have had their name tied to), even if I do tend to prefer the dance tracks.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 1 December 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

weird, i guess i just don't associate most of the tracks on the holiday mix (and similar) with tracks people danced to. like i wrote, it's more 10pm to 12am stuff. i heard the cajmere mix out a lot, and the soulwax mix of daft punk, the others are chancier.

Nick Sylvester, Thursday, 1 December 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

I mean, it may or may not fly at dance clubs but imo it's still def dance music (especially when compared to recent Juan MacLean, Delia & Gavin, Black Dice, that J.O.Y. single, etc.)

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 1 December 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

anyone know what, if anything, james murphy has had to do with the dfa mixes have been put out so far? have they all been the tims?

and, uh, could anyone hazard a guess at what he might charge? how much do dj's get paid to put a mix together anyway?

panning, Thursday, 1 December 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to follow that up by saying this is the kind of thing that makes go straight for the file-sharing.

"Holiday Mix"

Sounds to me like JM wants you, the fan, to pay for his holiday presents this year....

jsoulja (jsoulja), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

file sharing? i think you can buy the whole mix for 99 cents on itunes.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

*sigh* etc

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 1 December 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

yeah you can get the CD for the price of a single, you'd have to be some fucking tightarse to complain about this one!

turboalbino (haitch), Thursday, 1 December 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

I don't get it. It says HOLIDAY MIX, not FREE HOLIDAY MIX?!?!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 1 December 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

99 cents ain't free, dood

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 1 December 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

There are some cheap fucking DFA fans out there.

i asked him about this a few weeks ago. the only remix he didn't have his hand in was the black dice "smiling off" mix, which was entirely tim. no idea re: $$$

Nick Sylvester, Friday, 2 December 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

hey, nick... i don't know why i logged out to ask the question to begin with... but i meant the mixed cd's... a la the colette mix and whatnot. i saw him spin in LA a little over a month ago and had a great time. i was considering contacting him re: that, for a promotional mix.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 2 December 2005 04:52 (twenty years ago)

actually i'll start a thread about this issue when my question is a bit more specific. i have a whole host of them about what a mix album typically (i know, i know, there's no specific answer to this question) costs to produce... i would imagine that a sample playlist done by a dj in this vein would not be hard to imagine, and therefore a rough guess could be made. i don't know. it's all too early days.
