Yeah Yeah Yeahs Title New Feline Concept Record

Matthew Solarski reports:
Speculation about the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs record has been a-churning since the trees 'round here were promenading in full bloom. Now those trees look dead and gnarled and the only glimmers of non-holiday-related wintertime hope come in the form of details on that oh-so-anticipated record. Behold what the latest batch of hope hath wrought:

Coco Beware will be the title of Yeah Yeah Yeahs record number two, according to an mtv.com interview with producer Sam "Squeak E. Clean" Spiegel. Who's Coco, you query? Not the kooky 1980s parrot-wielding pro wrestler, but singer Karen O's Chilean pet cat, adopted off the streets by the charismatic frontwoman during a spiritual journey to South America and lovingly carted back to NYC. Coco provided the afflatus for Karen and co.'s new full-length, reportedly a concept record abstractly illustrating the cat's epic journey. You know, like Ulysses, but for the kids.

Tentatively set for March 2006 release, Clean-- younger brother of idiosyncratic film and music video director Spike Jonze-- disclosed that the journey of Coco will comprise 12-13 tracks and that additional off-topic tracks may well wind up on an EP.

If naming a concept record after a cat named after a wrestler just isn't zany enough for you, the NME reports the the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are holding an album-art design contest as well. Specifically, you get to play Betsy Ross, as the band is seeking flag designs "embodying the symbolic essence that you have vibed off us totally to the max." So, like, hella good ones. Your flag "might" appear on the cover of Coco Beware and the Meow Meow Meows plan to feature other choice banners in the CD's liner notes and/or on their website. Best dig out those Crayolas quicklike: all entries must be postmarked by December 8. Details here.

Furthermore, Squeak E. Clean teasingly alluded to a forthcoming Karen O solo record, which is said to include "superstar" guests. The record will likely not see release until 2007. So there's a source of hope for next winter for y'all.

The busybody trio has been up to all kinds of malarkey of late, including curating a day of All Tomorrow's Parties, releasing books, and developing hardcore side projects. For extensive info, please consult our litany of linkage below. A comprehensive Yeah Yeah Yeahs tour is in the works, but for now please drool over this lone date:

05-13 East Sussex, England - Camber Sands Holiday Centre (All Tomorrow's Parites)

----

This is probably my most anticipated release for next year. :-D I'm a bit wary, but all of the songs bthey've been playing live since FTT have been fantastic, so I've got faith that they can pull this off.

If Pitchfork are so indie, surely they'd be more familiar with Koko's work as a vicious heel in the Memphis territories rather than as a goofy babyface in McMahonland?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was gonna say...

Well, not actually what Dom said, but roughly the same info.

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

...uh, actually, speaking of which, I apparently just heard this. Although I didn't know it at the time. It was...good? People need to notify me about this sort of shit.

Is he wearing a white suit and sipping a mint julip?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Apparently their manager came over and was playing it for the president here, which is weird, since they're not on our label and all, but whatever. The president then told me this afterwards. "hey, did you hear the new yeah yeah yeahs song?" No, I didn't, I was posting on ILM. So I heard it somewhere in the background but not, you know, actually.

Anyway, point being, it's now being circulated, so you should see a leak soon.

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

I love the title.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

Someone who I'd uhhh go to the mat for (in terms of respecting his opinion) said that early bits he had heard a while back sounded strangely like the Arcade Fire... He was as shocked as me.

And yes, I know how stupid it is to say that...

Koko had the worst entrance music for a wrestler ever.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

I thought the title was because Sarah had some beef w/ Karen O.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

Koko was just an updated version of Leaping Lanny Poffo -- a crowd fave who got his ass beat every time he stepped into the ring.

I hope the new stuff is good and I'm excited to hear it but I don't get the slow pace. Jay-Z used to put out like three albums a year!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

Koko is now a WWE Legend

I think if it weren't for "Maps" we'd have had a shitload more albums from them by now, but since they had a legitimate pop hit, they're probably nervous about following it up. Without the hit, hey, just keep putting stuff out; with it, you've got an opportunity you're expected to take advantage of.

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

"Jay-Z used to put out like three albums a year! "

and they were mostly all shit

okoko, Thursday, 1 December 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 1 December 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

i'm fairly certain that every member of th group has noted at points in the lastfew years, that the quick rise to international fame was unnerving and had impacted their songwriting methods and day to day life.

the jay-z comparison is entirely foolish.

i'm willing to wager they aren't concerned so much with following up on "maps" but being interested in and pleased with the music they are creating.

yyy's are a very private band. they will work at their own pace.

finally, like most new groups..the songs released on their debut date from a period when pace was much slower and there was time and space to work out how and why songs should sound. why shouldn't they be allowed that same pace now? because they are "popstars"? that horsepoop has almost never lead to good things (and this isn't 1964 any more).

bb (bbrz), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

the quick rise to international fame

It's like The Beatles multiplied by the Bay City Rollers!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)
