what would follow?

Rock Show - Peaches (my intro)
Pride - Husker Du
Frail and Bedraggled - Smashing Pumpkins
???? - i'd like something either in same vein full of ridiculous energy but with less sweet vocals than Corgan... or sweet short and tinkling (not necessarily guitar rock), to come here.

thx!

opooo i want to hear these right now! steve gertz stop w/ your mocking.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 1 December 2005 06:16 (nineteen years ago)

All in good fun, Susan. I happen to have fond memories of that commercial (although it in no way holds a candle to its cousin, "Freedom Rock").

So I guess I'll throw my hat in the ring for "Superheroes of BMX" by Mogwai, or perhaps "The Sun, the Sea" by (the) Verve

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Thursday, 1 December 2005 06:44 (nineteen years ago)

halo of flies "headburn"

ugly that shit up.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 1 December 2005 07:36 (nineteen years ago)

TRG (TRG), Thursday, 1 December 2005 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Thursday, 1 December 2005 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

And follow that up with -
Dirtbombs "Don't Bogue My High"
Gories cover of "Give Me Some Money"
Comets on Fire "Got a Feelin"

TRG (TRG), Thursday, 1 December 2005 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

is the smashing pumpkins song a bad idea? it seems balanced out by pride and vice versa.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 1 December 2005 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

Honestly, I can't even remember what that SP song sounds like. I just suggested the Mint Chicks song because it's a sharp contrast to almost anything.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 2 December 2005 02:47 (nineteen years ago)

i went to my local megastore but didn't come back with much. disappointed not to find The Mint Chicks or Electric Six or Ohio Express. I did find the Detroit Cobras and Halo of Flies and bought them. I like Incesticide Stomp. I got a random Comets on Fire cd too but i'm not sure I can use it ... I couldn't find the song listed here. I'll go back and look for the rest of it, but I'm still looking for guitar rythim with a strong beat behind it ...maybe similar to Black Betty but not as southern rockish or as structured? I need to check out the Byrds, Yardbirds, del Vettes etc.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 5 December 2005 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

mekons?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

the fall?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

buzzcocks? haha the entire rough trade catalogue?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

that DelVettes track is one of the greatest things to ever exist

ZR (teenagequiet), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

i only have Fear and Whiskey. hmmm maybe the opening track! And I always want to insert Psycho Cupid into every mixed tape.

i don't know the fall or the buzzcocks. making this cd is gonna be educational (and expensive), which is nice. i've rely on a very limited amount of guitar rock to keep me going for past 20 years. but shits running out :(

thx for the suggestions. i think i'm just going to go out and get it all.

and what about The White Stripes?

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

For Mekons -- Rock 'n' Roll is probably the closest you'll get from them when it comes to straight "Guitar Rock." You might be better off seeking out The Three Johns, Jon Langford's solo work (especially Skull Orchard), and maybe the Waco Brothers, if you want your guitar rock countrified.

If you haven't already, pick up both Hold Steady albums.

A|ex P@reene (Pareene), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

Dresden Dolls >>>>>> White Stripes

fandango (fandango), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

correction: i recently bought 50,000 fall Fans can't be wrong. i've listened to parts of it. i think it might ahve that propulsive energy sound that i'm looking for.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

sonic youth

mary christ, catholic block, no queen blues, etc, etc, etc

bb (bbrz), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry... I'm not being very useful or specific.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

I think there are some White Stripes songs that might fit your criteria. Maybe try their first s/t album? Alex is otm about the Mekons. From the album he mentions you might want to try "Heaven and Back," it's a good one. You might also want to take a look at the Rough Trade Rock 'n' Roll compilation - I'd imagine you could cherry pick a few songs off of that and save yourself from having to buy 25 new CDs.

TRG (TRG), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

thx

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 5 December 2005 22:13 (nineteen years ago)

White Stripes - "Hypnotize", "Fell In Love With A Girl"

Pixies - "Broken Face", "Debaser", "Tame", "Rock Music", "Planet Of Sound"

The Hives - "Hate To Say I Told You So"

Vitalic - "La Rock 01", "My Friend Dario" (not guitar rock)

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Monday, 5 December 2005 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

i'm totally digging these so far:

Comets on Fire - wow, i love the way the voice and guitar are interlacing! its amazing.
Vitalic - My Friend Dario
White Stripes - Hypnotize
the Thelonius Monk - Tinke, Trinkle - so nice, i want to find a place for it
Electric Six - Gay Bar

i also listened to Zuma again last nite. I might put Pardon My Heart in instead of Stupid Girl. the guitar at end of Pardon My Heart is chilling.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

Glad you're liking some of my suggestions so far. Another great one in the same "full of ridiculous energy but with less sweet vocals" vein is "Deceptacon" by Le Tigre (the original not the remix).
Sonicly, I'd say it's somewhere between Peaches and Electric Six which you already like.
