Watching the DVD that comes with the 30th Anniversary Issue of A Night at the Opera right now, and it strikes me that drummer Roger Taylor is -- if not the coolest dude in the band -- that certainly the least embarassing gent in their ranks. Seriously, Brian May could play like maestro, but that hair! Mercury, likewise, had a voice from the gods, but between the teeth, the harlequin outfits and the prancing, sometimes it just got a bit too much. John Deacon? Gormless. But Roger Taylor -- the man plays drums in a proggy-glammy dinosaur band, and he still looks like he could've been in the Stiff Little Fingers or, at the very least, Motorhead. Couple that with his nasty raspy voice and his burly drum battery, and easily, the man ranks as verily the coolest members of Queen.

You may beg to differ. State so.

Rob Deacon!

He got the hell out after Freddie died and the other two debated on getting Robbie in as a replacement. And everyone else.

Freddie. Ok, maybe not. Certainly not Brian May's hair.

FREDDIE MERCURY YOU FOOL

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Dismissing Freddie Mercury as the coolest dude in Queen because his act got "got a bit too much" doesn't make sense to me. Isn't "too much" the very essence of Queen? That, to me, is one of the reasons why they are so special.

Plus, that Queen + Paul Rodgers CD proves who the coolest member of Queen was: Freddie. I know May and Taylor are great musicians and good songwriters, but Freddie made Queen.

Brian's dodgy barnet made so much more sense to me when I twigged his enthusiasm for astronomy - think he did an Astronomy degree at university. I honestly think it's some sort of tribute to Isaac Newton.

Queen without Freddie Mercury makes as much sense as The Cure without Robert Smith or -- for that matter -- Killing Joke without Jaz Coleman. It simply doesn't work. I mean no disrespect to Paul Rodgers (though if I never heard fucking "All Right Now" by Free again, that would be JUST FINE with me), but he's no Freddie Mercury. Not even close.

...but Roger's still the cool one.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 1 December 2005 17:16 (eighteen years ago) link

I thought they were all cool, minus Brian May's post-Mercury shenanigans (did the world really NEED a "Dragon Attack" remix?). The fact that all four of them individually wrote radio hits is, as far as I know, a rarity in rock.

There is nothing cooler than an outrageously flamboyant Indian opera singer (wannabe) fronting a rock band.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 1 December 2005 17:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Fair point, this.

Little-known secret: Bassist is ALWAYS the coolest. Well, not always, but frequently. Standing there unperturbed at the back of the stage, looking bored, chewing gum and driving the song along is practically a living depiction of coolness. Which is, of course, not the same thing as musical greatness. (No, I don't play bass myself nor particularly aspire to.)

Roger Taylor loses for having released a terrible solo album in 1984 that was in heavy rotation on MTV for a couple days. Ridiculous cover of Springsteen's "Racing in the Streets" too.

Queen members in descending order of coolness :

John - as mentioned above, the bass player is (almost) always the coolest member of any given band, and being a bassist myself I speak from experience. Also, he looked the most bored in the Radio Ga Ga video.

Freddie - Bohemian Rhapsody is not only the official most-loved UK number 1 single, it's also the story of a gay man being judged by the elders of Zoroastrianism or whatever it's called. Also, Freddie wrote side 2 of Queen 2.

Roger - he wrote Tenement Funster and squirted water on his snare drum so it'd spray everywhere when he played, but he now looks like something from Terrahawks and votes Tory. Also, he wrote A Kind Of Magic.

Brian - sorry Bri, but the hair. And Starfleet. And Anita Dobson. In his favour, he wrote The Prophet Song.

Freddie Mercury was a musical genius with a godlike voice, and that is the only kind of "cool" that counts in music.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 3 December 2005 00:26 (eighteen years ago) link

fyi::
For the Spring 2006 tour dates Brian May (guitar & vocals), Roger Taylor (drums & vocals) and Paul Rodgers (vocals, guitar & piano) are joined by Danny Miranda, ex Blue Oyster Cult on bass, Jamie Moses, former Brian May band member on second guitar, and Spike Edney, long-time Queen sideman on keyboards. (Queen bassist John Deacon has retired from touring.)
