So I'm listening to Ryan Adams "29" and I'm pretty sure it sucks.

Not ENTIRELY sure, yet.

Sure, I like the guy. But he's definitely someone that will benefit from a well-curated Greatest Hits for the masses.

...and anyone that thinks his over-the-top emo bullshit is "endearing" is retarded (I'm looking at you Danjer and I MIGHT be looking at you fancy bill/bakers). I'll give you this: "The Sadness" is a crazy flamenco flavored song that's SORT OF cute in it's brazen don't-give-a-fuck emoting, but most of the rest is maudlin. Gross.

"You come through the door like a bag of rocks"

WTF

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 1 December 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty sure you're right. I haven't heard it though.

btw: where can I get STNNNG online? The only record store I've been to didn't have it and I'm broke and lazy.

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 1 December 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

"Strawberry Wine" = RA does Devendra.

Cold Roses > Jacksonville City Nights > 29

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Thursday, 1 December 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

Haven't really listened to CR. JCN is pretty good. OMG 29 sucks pretty hard. But I'll keep listening to it, if only to have an informed opinion when I slag my friends for liking it.

Cold Roses > Jacksonville City Nights > 29

Where would you rank his conference call with the Lost Highway guys, where he's clearly high and probably eating Cheerios while they patiently explain that Love Is Hell = teh snore and couldn't he, y'know, make something, er, well, good?

If only he'd had the good sense to go out in a blaze of glory after Gold, like engulfed in flame while trying to make a bong out of Winona Ryder...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 1 December 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

Seriously. He's sort of embarassing these days.

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 1 December 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Beg to differ. JCN >>> Cold Roses, although maybe only 1x> whichever half of the songs on Cold Roses you like most. Have only heard title song of 29 which was mediocre on first listen.

The phone tape was (a) not about Love Is Hell, and (b) an obvious put-on, with the label guys participating.

Vornado, Thursday, 1 December 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

where do I hear the phone tape?

teeny (teeny), Friday, 2 December 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

It was on his homepage for a while. Don't think I bothered to save it. But I wouldn't be surprised if the obsessos have posted it to the Ryan Adams FTP (address and login details at http://www.ryanadams.org/news.asp?id=433).

here's the label website: http://www.modern-radio.com

they do mail/internet orders....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 2 December 2005 01:20 (twenty years ago)

Cold Roses sucked.

the guy is over, over, over.

I"m afraid to even bother with 29, except I know that it will come in the mail and I will lose self control.

don weiner (don weiner), Friday, 2 December 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

Hey my friends' band is on Modern Radio!

....I'm not buying "29." I'll swipe it from whoever I know buys it.

giboyeux (skowly), Friday, 2 December 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

the title track is a horrible version of "Trucker"

don weiner (don weiner), Friday, 2 December 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

i would find it really unsettling if he made a good album.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Friday, 2 December 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

I find it amusing how important rockist hobbyhorses like too-obvious influences ("Strawberry Wine" = RA does Devendra) and authenticity ("over-the-top emo bullshit") become to ILXers when discussing music that the unhip, white strawman-demographic-du-jour (frat boys? classic rock fans?) might listen to, too.

I have not heard 29. But JCN was great. Because of the songs. (Where Love Is Hell and Rocknroll disappoint). The fact that RA lacks a rockist "better to burn out than fade away" storyline is a distraction. And the strange thing is, you guys already know all this.

marc h. (marc h.), Friday, 2 December 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

im rather shocked that I wasnt the one who started this thread

ill buy 29, and i agree that Cold Roses was his best this year.

JD from CDepot, Saturday, 3 December 2005 03:38 (twenty years ago)

Cold Roses is great, JCN was pretty good too

Dr J Bowman (Dr J Bowman), Saturday, 3 December 2005 08:57 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
So. Did anyone actually buy this?

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 22 December 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

I did. First spin and I hated it. I am starting to like it now. A couple of clunkers but surprisingly not bad. After the turds of Rock n Roll and Love is Hell I had lost interest in Adams. His 05 releases have brought me back.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Friday, 23 December 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

I've not bought it but I've been listening to it a lot from the streaming link above.

I've enjoyed all his records this year, most of all Cold Roses. I did't like any of them at first though, I've had to warm to all three over time, particularly 29. But now I enjoy 29 very much, aside from a couple of dud tracks (when he sings falsetto)

I don't know why but I can always make the effort to try and get into his records. I don't have this patience with any other artists, I usually demand instant gratification from them. I guess it's because I've got so much from Heartbreaker, Gold and the Whiskeytown records in the past so I give him the benefit of the doubt.

In a way, he got a lot of the "hype" off his back with RnR & Love is Hell (I agree with everyone else saying they're duds) and is now probably dealing with a more realistic level of expectation (although not from ILM which has always been hyper-critical of him post-gold). Cold Roses is the best of his this year and its at least warm reception from most is deserved.
