Sure, I like the guy. But he's definitely someone that will benefit from a well-curated Greatest Hits for the masses.
...and anyone that thinks his over-the-top emo bullshit is "endearing" is retarded (I'm looking at you Danjer and I MIGHT be looking at you fancy bill/bakers). I'll give you this: "The Sadness" is a crazy flamenco flavored song that's SORT OF cute in it's brazen don't-give-a-fuck emoting, but most of the rest is maudlin. Gross.

Where would you rank his conference call with the Lost Highway guys, where he's clearly high and probably eating Cheerios while they patiently explain that Love Is Hell = teh snore and couldn't he, y'know, make something, er, well, good?
If only he'd had the good sense to go out in a blaze of glory after Gold, like engulfed in flame while trying to make a bong out of Winona Ryder...

The phone tape was (a) not about Love Is Hell, and (b) an obvious put-on, with the label guys participating.

the guy is over, over, over.
I"m afraid to even bother with 29, except I know that it will come in the mail and I will lose self control.

....I'm not buying "29." I'll swipe it from whoever I know buys it.

I have not heard 29. But JCN was great. Because of the songs. (Where Love Is Hell and Rocknroll disappoint). The fact that RA lacks a rockist "better to burn out than fade away" storyline is a distraction. And the strange thing is, you guys already know all this.

ill buy 29, and i agree that Cold Roses was his best this year.

I've enjoyed all his records this year, most of all Cold Roses. I did't like any of them at first though, I've had to warm to all three over time, particularly 29. But now I enjoy 29 very much, aside from a couple of dud tracks (when he sings falsetto)
I don't know why but I can always make the effort to try and get into his records. I don't have this patience with any other artists, I usually demand instant gratification from them. I guess it's because I've got so much from Heartbreaker, Gold and the Whiskeytown records in the past so I give him the benefit of the doubt.
In a way, he got a lot of the "hype" off his back with RnR & Love is Hell (I agree with everyone else saying they're duds) and is now probably dealing with a more realistic level of expectation (although not from ILM which has always been hyper-critical of him post-gold). Cold Roses is the best of his this year and its at least warm reception from most is deserved.
