Friends, inquisitive friends
Are asking what's come over me.

Funky, but not funk: As much a rock track as the Illusion's "Have You Seen Her Eyes" or the Flaming Ember's "Westbound No. 9." And my favorite of all George Clinton's output.

Didn't he do it at least twice, once with the Parliaments and then once with Parliament?

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 1 December 2005 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, the first was a 1960s single, and a different version appears on Up For the Down Stroke.

Isn't it also on America Eats Its Young?

fuck, one of my favorite tunes ever. Johnnie Taylor did it too--not one of his better songs, but what the hey. the one from that Parliaments comp I love the most, most is "Look At What I Almost Missed," to my mind one of the greatest pop songs ever. the version of "Testify" on "Down Stroke" is good too. my only complaint about that Parliaments comp is the sound and the packaging--seems to be mastered from vinyl or something, and the liner notes are notably illiterate, plus whoever put the fucking thing together didn't even bother to get some of the song titles correct on the insert. maybe someday it'll be done right...

emo? what? funk, baby.

It's soul music. That was a musical genre very popular in the 1960s and 1970s. It's like emo for people over 20.

It's on Up For the Down Stroke too? I don't remember that (not saying it's not there).
A quick AMG check says yes. Now I just gotta find the damn album (I think my brother has it) so I can give it another listen... He'd better have it, or I'll kill him...

"Call My Baby Pussycat" was redid on there. "All Your Goodies are Gone" was also redid on Up for the Downstroke. and "Red Hot Mama" was redid on Standing on the Verge. a lot of The Parliaments stuff got its hair redid.

There's a cool garage rock version of Testify by the Forum Quorum on a 1968 Decca LP, featuring electric bouzouki.

C'mon, you gotta YSI that if you got it...

"I'll Stay" (one of my favourite Funkadelic tracks evah) was based on an old Parliaments track too. They re-did lots of those old songs.

WTF I just listened to this song about 10 minutes ago, the Parliaments version, that is. Stop spying on me you freaks!
