ILXors in the singles charts?

If we limit the discussion to more or less regular posters (ie disregarding "White Town dude posted here once"), has any ilxor ever been in the actual proper singles charts? Did "Hairstyle of the Devil" chart, for instance? Is there a remix by Drew on the B-side of some straight-in-at-37 single? Am I forgetting someone obvious? WHO WINS?

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Friday, 2 December 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

Gay Dad with their famous drummer.

StanM (StanM), Friday, 2 December 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

yeah, but which charts? I've had a couple of singles on the Canadian College Radio charts (and also one single on the Rough Trade chart) but both of those are a bit like saying "yeah, but we're big in Estonia!"

(Sorry to the Estonian ILX contingent.)

Control your ponies, children! (kate), Friday, 2 December 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

Any nation's Main Proper Singles Chart counts. So #27 in Estonia is OK, Canadian College Radio chart is not (sorry Kate).

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Friday, 2 December 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

Does singing in the 'choir' of a track on the b-side that got to number nine (and being named on the sleeve) count?

That is offensive to my proud nationality of ESTONIA, especially since your is huge in ESTONIA. But this not timing of the first. The PRESIDENT OF ESTONIA sent you a TELEGRAPH to play at THE ESTONIA NATIONAL ANTHEM and YOU DID NOT RESPOND.

Why do you hurt the nations that love you? ;-(

Piotr Skut, Friday, 2 December 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

Momus, big in Japan, and er, everywhere else based on that nude photo of him.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 2 December 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

not yet but ESTEBAN BUTTEZ & THE OTHER GUYS HIRED BY THE RECORD COMPANY is going to get this years christmas number one in every country with "Here's A Generic Christmas-Themed Song For Your NEW iPod" ha ha ha

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!, Friday, 2 December 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

Bah. It's my one claim to fame. :-(

x-post name the date! I'd go to Estonia in a shot!

Don't get too excited, it's just "esteban" trolling under a different name.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 2 December 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

Ah yes of course, Momus's Japanese hit single writing shenanigans! I guess he wins that country then.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Friday, 2 December 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

Ach, I was hoping it was Ti'it (sorry, did I spell your name right?) with a genuine offer!

Roots Manuva's 'Colossal Insight' made Top 40 so yes.

Not trying to brag (no I'm *really* not) but I played bass guitar on St Etienne's top 40 smash (was it?) "Only Love Can Break Your Heart".

Also, Erland from Kings of Convenience.

Actually, has Jyoti White Town ever posted?

UK leader so far! Though a special category for a-sides is not unreasonable, I think.

Not trying to brag (no I'm *really* not) but I played bass guitar on St Etienne's top 40 smash (was it?) "Only Love Can Break Your Heart".

Yes, it got to number 39. You're so allowed to brag about that! Leader of UK A-side category?

if we could somehow bend the will of the thread title towards sub-cult nano-celebrity then i might have a passing claim...

Spill all you too john!

Also, Dr.C and other hopeful chart raiders may want to use this thread for recommending outlets and download sites whose sales count for the charts. It may pay off you know, nudge wink etc.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Sunday, 26 March 2006 01:01 (nineteen years ago)

"Talking To a Computer" has been played twice on National radio in Norway, but still a long way to go to the singles chart. :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 26 March 2006 01:06 (nineteen years ago)

That kind of defeatist attitude will get you nowhere.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 26 March 2006 01:10 (nineteen years ago)

I wrote two songs that were played at least once each on Canadian radio. That's not very impressive, I know.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Sunday, 26 March 2006 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

Wahey congrats Geir! It's a good one, too. Which channel, Petre?

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Sunday, 26 March 2006 01:22 (nineteen years ago)

I'm only an occasional poster (though longtime lurker) so it might not count but I was in a band that had several very minor chart hits in the early 90's. I'm saying what band though...

ant, Sunday, 26 March 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

Oh but give us the peak position + country at least!

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Sunday, 26 March 2006 12:35 (nineteen years ago)

This is the next NUMBER ONE on the charts, bitches: http://s5.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3D0X8LG93BNSI3RWBER8S5Z60K

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Sunday, 26 March 2006 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

I'm the UK leader? Who'd have thought?

(That's got to be up for grabs, surely)

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 26 March 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

Which channel, Petre?

Yes. In "Urørt", which is a program with about half of the playlist consisting of unsigned acts.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 26 March 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

If Geir can get on Norway Radio, then I surely can go to NUMBER ONE and be knee-deep in the Norwegian Bitches.

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Sunday, 26 March 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

Peak about 36, (UK singles, I'll check that though) but we were ripped off by Noel Gallagher so we impressed someone.

ant, Sunday, 26 March 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

You were in Northern Uproar?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 26 March 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

The Real People?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 26 March 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't Northern Uproar come after Oasis?

18 Wheeler?

jellybean (jellybean), Sunday, 26 March 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

The Smiths?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 26 March 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

I'm seconding Ned with the Real People.

Michael Lambert (Michael Lambert), Sunday, 26 March 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

Real People peaked with Believer in 1992, at #38. Northern Uproar are too late and got to #17. No chart hits for 18 Wheeler that I can spot.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 26 March 2006 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

The Beatles?

Sym Sym (sym), Sunday, 26 March 2006 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

Airhead? Thousand Yard Stare?

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Sunday, 26 March 2006 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

Lotta gets gold medal...

ant, Sunday, 26 March 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

Whoa, crazy. Well, hi there! I actually saw you guys open for the Wonder Stuff in LA in 1991. (And if THAT doesn't date me and the time and place, nothing will.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 26 March 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

Which night were you at? the first or the second?

ant, Sunday, 26 March 2006 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry to have to disappoint you ant, but you only made #38 it seems. Still new A-side leader!

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Sunday, 26 March 2006 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

Milltown Brothers peaked at #38 too, in 1991, and had four more in the top 60, except there is no such thing as a top 60.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 26 March 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

Which night were you at? the first or the second?

That's a really good question. I think the first but I have no way of knowing, though there might be an old ticket stub around somewhere. Did something bizarre happen on one of the two nights?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 26 March 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

Top 55 even, gotta milk it for what it's worth. :)
xpost

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Sunday, 26 March 2006 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

I think we had a few that just missed the top 40...a lot of money was spent.

ant, Sunday, 26 March 2006 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

Yep, 38-41-43-55-48 according to my Guinness.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Sunday, 26 March 2006 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

A lot of bizzarre things happened on that tour Ned. Our keyboard player dislocated his shoulder in Boston and we met, and had lots of bizarre fun with the Smashing Pumpkins who also supported on a couple of dates.

As for those shows, can't really remember apart from some of the biggest crowds of the tour. I think they might well have been the last official dates although we played quite a few tiny places after certain gigs.

Everything is a bit hazy but it was a lot of fun.

ant, Sunday, 26 March 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

we met, and had lots of bizarre fun with the Smashing Pumpkins who also supported on a couple of dates

Heh, crazy. I saw them for the first time around then as well.

Glad to hear that at least you had a good time! I gather (understandably) that a lot of UK bands just find the endless miles of driving across the country to be a bit of a slog.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 26 March 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

It was never dull for too long. The radio stuff was pretty boring but more the waiting around than anything. We actually sold more records before the tour than after so we must not have made that great an impression but we were made to feel like the rock stars we nearly were for a while.

ant, Sunday, 26 March 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

except there is no such thing as a top 60.

Googling suggests our mongrel-rodent may also have only bothered the top 60, though I imagine the number was rather closer to 1 on the dance charts (the ilx0r in question has also won the mongrel-equivalent of a Brit or a Grammy on at least one occasion)

kit brash (kit brash), Sunday, 26 March 2006 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

the bass player in my band was robbed of his ARIA - he played on the album that won but was booted from the band not long after its release.

(the ARIA being the award type kit refers to)

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Sunday, 26 March 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

Mine wasn't a hit, I think it only got to #66.

ratty, Sunday, 26 March 2006 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

You know you'd get higher than #66 if you featured a guest rap from MC Stylised Vadge. But it probably sold a lot more than yer typical #66 single, I'm guessing.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 26 March 2006 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, over a few years, I think it was about 24,000. A sleeper, as they say.
