Amon Amarth - Once Sent From The Golden Hall

one of my fave metal records of all time. great clashing swords on this record too. epic viking war metal.

MANOWAR! YES!!!

Also, I know it's obvious but Emperor's last album was MADE for the battlefield.

Manowar's Hail to England is a must have. So is the first, where they were more focused on being ersatz Vietnam veterans, a shtick they almost immediately abandoned.

Judas Priest Sad Wings of Destiny for "Tyrant," at the very least.

Virgin Steele House of Atreus PART II, not PART I. Ha-ha.

First two Iced Earth albums fulfill the Viking thing, plus their one on Gettysburg, which adds the Civil War.

Thor made a couple, unfortunately they're not his better ones. You would be greatly entertained by Keep the Dogs Away, his first, though.

Jagpanzer is also pretty reliably war metal.

Running Wild, the album with "The Hussar" on it.

UNLEASH THE FUCKING FURY!

That's a good one! Dream Evil's another band to look into.

And Three Inches of Blood!

Second Amon Amarth. Vs. The World is great, and they're killer live. Falkenbach is also pretty good.

i'm guessing by 'war metal' you mean something other than the high speed gurgling racket of bands like conqueror, revenge and black crucifixion?

as for viking, check out wyrd's huldrafolk, or wrath & revenge. and then there's heathen, which is one track about 50 minutes in length.

and anyone who's into the 'viking' shit should sidestep and check out some later root albums, like black seal or madness of the graves. czechoslovakian satanists doing big, triumphant dark metal with 'clean,' deep vocals from a crazed 50 year old man.

Probably not as obscure as you like, or Viking-oriented for that matter, but you could do a lot worse than Stormtroopers of Death - but maybe I just consider them "war metal" b/c of the album sleeve. How about Nuclear Assault?

i thought this thread was going to be about metal songs dealing with war and was going to recommend a lot of early metallica.

Bred to kill, not to care
do just as we saaaaay
finished here! greatings DEATH!
he's yours to take awaaaay!

No, this is the play war metal thread. Not the real war metal thread, where you think up band songs you can paint on the barrel of the gun on an M1 tank, which is depressing and makes you question the mental state of the people doing the listening.

Bal Sagoth, if you want your war totally over the top, or just really nerdy. I like them, but I know most metal fans don't.

Others:

Finntroll
Windham Hell (even though they were never technically about war)
Bolt Thrower
Bathory
Einherjer
Mithotyn
Marduk
Immortal

etc.

Three Inches Of Blood, totally. They played in my basement twice! Super nice Canadian dudes with fantastic songs about haunted lighthouses and destroying orcs.

At the end of the day, people who laugh are just jealous. Bal Sagoth ROCK!
