Because they were an occasionally amazing band?

Ally C (Ally C), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

It wasn't a question of aesthetics; I just wondered how this engorged cynic hooked up with them. Anyone got a story?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

they asked him?

is that David Lee Roth in the 100 bill?

jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 2 December 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

Becker was sorta wondering what he was gonna do post-Steely Dan is my understanding - there was no formal "we're done" so far as I know, but I suspect he was sorta playing with the idea of becoming a producer - he also did some amazing work with Rickie Lee Jones

"King in a Catholic Style" is a phenomenal song

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Friday, 2 December 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

incidentally, i revived this thread earlier...

Rickie Lee Jones, c/d?

I love "Wishful Thinking"

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 2 December 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

I, too, feel that China Crisis is/are underrated-I loved "Flaunt the Imperfection". They had a show scheduled in Seattle a few years back that was canceled, prob'ly due to poor ticket sales, sigh

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Friday, 2 December 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

I'll add to the China Crisis love with a vote for Arizona Sky. What a gorgeous song.

Palomino (Palomino), Friday, 2 December 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

"Black Man Ray" was a great song that sounded a lot like China Crisis and nothing like Steely Dan. :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 3 December 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

Yeah IIRC "King In A Catholic Style" was the only song on that album that sounds remotely like Steely Dan.

I'm also thinking this was just post rehab/drug prob for Becker, sort of a tentative step back into the daylight. Or maybe it was the last straw, a little blowout in the midst of a final coke binge.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Saturday, 3 December 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

Alfred is my hero for starting a China Crisis thread, let along one like this.

I carried the torch for China Crisis for many years, especially in my late teens/early 20's. Never met many people that were into them, really, if anyone. I still remember them fondly but really don't play them anymore. Did anyone get that really mellow acoustic live CD thing they did towards the end? It wasn't mind-blowing but not a bad way to go out, either.

three years pass...

"king in a catholic style" and "black man ray" pop into my head every once in a while. this was a pretty good record, haven't listened to the whole thing in nearly 20 years. i remember the production being very professional but not overtly "dan-like"

So the 'riginal question basically is "Why did Walter Becker cross the road?"?

Also worked with Fra Lippo Lippi and Rosie Vela.

While I wouldn't really class China Crisis as being up there with other bands who were producing this type of music at the time, Working With Fire and Steel and Flaunt The Imperfection are both a hundred, million, billion, zillion times better than anything that, say, Spandau Ballet managed to shit out in the '80s, as are the first three New Musik albums.

Flaunt the Imperfection is good, Autumn in the Neighbourhood from 2018 too

corrs unplugged, Friday, 31 July 2020 07:12 (five years ago)

I would say 'kinda good' is a fair assessment, yeah.

Maresn3st, Friday, 31 July 2020 10:22 (five years ago)

"Working with Fire and Steel" is borderline genius. As is "Wishful Thinking". I thought they actually suffered when Walter Becker got involved with them; I much preferred their previous album which was produced by Mike Howlett. But then again I'm 1,000,000% a New Wave junkie.

I was just pondering this question! Had no idea Becker was involved with something like "Black Man Ray". (One of only two tracks I definitely knew to be China Crisis songs before this week, along with "Arizona Sky".)

never really liked 'flaunt the imperfection' as a whole but i love the softness of the horns/woodwinds on 'you did cut me'. guitar on that song is lovely too.
