After much thought, I pick Too Dark Park!

Go!

Grell (Grell), Saturday, 3 December 2005 07:51 (twenty years ago)

Didn't take much thought, did it?

Too Dark Park's art was totally hideous... it's like they held a contest among fur-lipped 15-year-old Iron Maiden fans to submit their best doodles idly knocked off during biology class. At least the front panel of Too Dark Park itself obscures most of the stupidity; the Tormentor single artwork leaves no room for excuses.

It's tied with VIVIsectVI as their highest-rated album on AMG, although I don't have particularly strong memories of it. Other "great" albums with utterly ghastly artwork? I nominate the sole album by Sandy Denny's short-lived Fotheringay...

Worse. Far worse.

so frighteningly bad...

Grell (Grell), Saturday, 3 December 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

Too Dark Park by a massive landslide. They had some other stinkbombs (Brap is kinda crap), but Too Dark Park just looks like the back of some ridalin-addled adolescent's TrapperKepper. But, y'know, maybe that was the point.

What's wrong with the cover art for VIVIsectVI? I like the "what is it?" aspect of the x-ray photos.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 3 December 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Nothing's wrong with the art for VIVIsectVI; I was merely noting that Too Dark Park was tied with it in terms of musical content. I think VIVIsectVI might be my favorite cover of theirs, actually.

Oh, okay. Sorry. Misread that.

Grell (Grell), Sunday, 4 December 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

anyone, Ned?

Grell (Grell), Sunday, 4 December 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

here's the equally ugly website of the guy who did the cover art, jim cummins aka i, braineater: http://dogeatdogma.sed.ca/cummins.htm

amon (eman), Sunday, 4 December 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

a "brap" was the term the band used as a way to describe cramming as much output from a studio session as possible... not sure about the root of the word "brap" per se..

I should stress "and as quickly as possible" there too

dali madison's nut (donut), Sunday, 4 December 2005 03:28 (twenty years ago)

ah, that makes total sense - seeing as SP somehow managed to release an album every year from '84-'92.

Grell (Grell), Sunday, 4 December 2005 03:52 (twenty years ago)

Last Rights! Does anyone have the cover art for that one? Last Rights totally owns this thread!

Somehow I managed to overlook how bad their artwork is until now. Love is blind, I guess.

recovering optimist (Royal Bed Bouncer), Sunday, 4 December 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

the same guy did both covers, but its nowhere near as bad as too dark park (looks like he picked up chiaroscuro and perspective skills between records ;0D )

amon (eman), Sunday, 4 December 2005 05:46 (twenty years ago)

quick! how many SP albums feature skulls and/or bones?

Grell (Grell), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

here's the equally ugly website of the guy who did the cover art, jim cummins aka i, braineater

That is a totally craptastic web site. Good grief. And this guy's trying to get work as a designer?!

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:44 (twenty years ago)

and 90% of the bio content is dodgy quotes from reviews

amon (eman), Sunday, 4 December 2005 07:09 (twenty years ago)
