RFI: mexican/spanish guitar-folk

hey dudes, my friend is looking for some mexican/spanish/south-american guitar-folk music. he says he pictures his ideal being some sort of late 19th century mexican cowboy folk, but possibly with flourishes of classical/spanish guitar. this neednt be interpreted any more literally than you want.

any thoughts? he says virtuoso-guitar (segovia, etc) isnt exactly what he wants, and that folk music would be a closer approximation. but mexican, preferably. will he know if its south american, and not mexican? probably not.

This is traditional Colombian cowboy music, and very good, but it's not exactly guitar:

This reissue of an old recording by Puerto Rican cuatro legend Yomo Toro is not South American at all, but might fit the bill. Very Spanish sounding to me (at times anyway). Warning, it's just two tracks--the songs run into each other medley-wise:

The closest thing I have to what you're describing is a Luis E. Mejia Godoy record -- he's Nicaraguan, I think. It's good. You might search him out, I guess.

try Atahualpa Yupanqui and Simon Diaz, from Argentina and Venezuela, respectively. also seek out Los Indios Tabajaras, from Brazil. sorry...i don't know much about folk from mexico, besides Lydia Mendoza (who is also great).
