If Sean Ryder's always so fucking skint, why doesn't he just make some more music?

maybe he should get in contact with shaun ryder and see if they can do a duet!!

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!, Sunday, 4 December 2005 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

he couldn't afford the extra letters.

keyth (keyth), Sunday, 4 December 2005 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

The past few singles by the Happy Mondays have bombed bigtime haven't they? The atrocious 'Boys Are Back In Town' of the late 90s and that Goal one from some film or other. I don't think the Mondays could make much money anymore, unless they do more tours and seeing as his skin is grey and he can barely walk, I can't see them doing much of that. He must have made a good few quid out of 'Dare' though.

Affectian (Affectian), Sunday, 4 December 2005 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

I think he had some contractual obligation problems that prevented him from recording for the past few years, at least that's what he said on that documentary that was on a few months ago.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 4 December 2005 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

> He must have made a good few quid out of 'Dare' though.

Isn't the problem that he's bankrupt and doesn't get to see the money even if he earns any?

Niall, Sunday, 4 December 2005 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

Hold on, weren't the Happy Mondays on TOTP about a month ago with a real actual new single? Or did I dream it? Cos I seem to have forgotten about it again almost instantly, and haven't been reminded of it by anything, until just now.

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 4 December 2005 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

I thought Rev. Black Grape was his schtick now...

js (honestengine), Sunday, 4 December 2005 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

Is this true? Bez was/is in a similar situation was/isn't he? Apparently he only went on Big Brother for the money. How did they both screw up so badly? Who do they owe money to and why?

JimD, I think that was the Goal song from some film about football. Not sure of the exact details. Anyone know where this got to in the charts? And how did Boys Are Back In Town do?

Affectian (Affectian), Sunday, 4 December 2005 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

"Shaun Ryder: singer, songwriter and frontman of The Happy Mondays and Black Grape hit rock bottom in Australia a year ago; his assets were frozen, he was locked in litigation and battling with ongoing drug problems. His family feared for his life."

from here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree/tv/shaun_ryder.shtml

Why his assets were frozen still isn't clear, though...

Niall, Sunday, 4 December 2005 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

He lost a court case against his former Black Grape management team which they took against him for sacking them. The case got resolved last year, which is why Ryder has only started putting music out and touring recently.

neil tacus (tacit), Sunday, 4 December 2005 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

How did they both screw up so badly?

uh, is there really any mystery about this?

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 4 December 2005 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

Boys Are Back In Town remarkably got to #24 in '99. I think the recent single 'Playground Superstar' charted somewhere between 41 and 75.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Sunday, 4 December 2005 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

"How did they both screw up so badly?"

Hi, my name is crack cocaine and stealing the masters to an album for more crack cocaine.

js (honestengine), Sunday, 4 December 2005 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah everyone knows crack is to blame in part but I'm more interested in the details about the court cases and royalties which uh, yeah, are still a bit of a mystery to most.

Affectian (Affectian), Sunday, 4 December 2005 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, give the guy a break, there was a long period when for legal reasons he couldn't record. Sure he fucked up due to drugs, but nobody deserves to immersed in the amount of legal crap he's had to endure. Fucking talented lyricist whatever else you say.

lexurian (lexurian), Sunday, 4 December 2005 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry that was a bit swarey.

lexurian (lexurian), Sunday, 4 December 2005 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

he buys the 'under the counter' vodka in our local newsagents. i think it may be ethonol.

never heard it, but I don't think you imagined it. Unless I did too.

fandango (fandango), Sunday, 4 December 2005 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

This is from the court case back in 1999 - it's an interesting read...
http://www.ucc.ie/law/restitution/archive/englcases/ryder.htm

"He (Ryder) said that he was freaked out by paperwork and that it did his nut in."

That'll be a legal term.

According to something I just found via that BBC website:

Ryder resurfaced in 2003 with his first solo recording, Amateur Night In The Big Top

Did this actually come out? Anyone heard it?

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 5 December 2005 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

i don't know about SR's solo album but i've heard Bez' solo single "rattle my head" which is ok and somewhat considerably better than i expected it to be.

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Monday, 5 December 2005 00:39 (nineteen years ago)

"Dare" would be one of my tunes of the year if only Ryder wasn't on it.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 5 December 2005 00:45 (nineteen years ago)

Amateur Night In The Big Top may have only come out in Australia, it was released on the Carrolls' label (and recorded in their garage).

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 5 December 2005 00:57 (nineteen years ago)

shaun is living in PERTH these days

he must be well fucked up then

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!, Monday, 5 December 2005 02:03 (nineteen years ago)

I chucked all my Happy Mondays records out after catching that documentary about him.

Louie_Strychnine, Monday, 5 December 2005 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

I've seen copies of Amateur Night in the Big Top in many bargain bins in the UK.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 5 December 2005 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

re solo lp : wasn't it produced by Cab Voltaire bloke Mallinder ?

deffo released in uk .. only ever heard one track and decided that despite loving CV and Happy Mondays seperately - their sonic union was not going to be top of my wishlist.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 5 December 2005 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

You chucked all his records when you found out he was a self-absorbed, money-burning drug-addicted egomaniac?

If that's your criteria then you must have a very small record collection.

Pills n Thrills is still a terrific album.

Swamp Thing (Swamp Thing), Monday, 5 December 2005 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

wasn't that, like the POINT of Happy Mondays?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 5 December 2005 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

I'd like to know more about the documentary. Apparently the accompanied him around for eighht months. Is he still on crack? It's not like he's ever been through rehab and got clean is it?

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

the clown record got pretty decent press, given the state of shaun at the time...covereagein the monthly's at least. i've seen it a few times in new york, but don't know a soul that's heard it.

i can't imagine very many people that would give him a few thousand quid to even do a single...it's not always easy to just go make more music.

bb (bbrz), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

The 2nd hand record shop wouldn't take my copy of the first Black Grape album as they had a fair few already. I actually prefer that record to anything Shaun Ryder did in the Happy Mondays.

Pills N Thrills is a good record, I think I just got sick of it - hearing Step On all the time at dreadful Indie nights. I thought Bummed had some good songs though I always thought the production was way too murky for my tastes.
