You kind of have to split 1980-89 off from 89-93 if you're going to do this, as the styles are very different, and there are far fewer pre 89' tracks worth listening to, whereas there are thousands of great tunes in the later period...

I'm not a hip hop patriot and admit a lot of UK stuff is wack, but Blade 'Mind of an Ordinary Citizen', Demon Boyz 'Glimmety Glammety', MC Mello 'Mello's gone crazy', Hijack 'Badman is Robbin' all co-opt Bomb Squad and Marley Marl, speed them up, add more layers and then bludgeon them to death. Does anyone know whether hardcore DJs used to play these tunes with other breakbeat stuff? has anyone got tapes to prove it?

Nebbesh, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't think hardcore djs played this type of stuff at any point (of course i may be wrong, but i think this was very separate. (certainly from 92 onwards)

gareth, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Re: UK Hiphop, I think DJ Hype and probably some other people were already scratching stuff up over hardcore, but yeah, it's doubtful they played any BritRap. Those early tunes are definitely v. good tho. Did people ever think of Shut Up And Dance as hiphop??

Straight Outta Compton!

Oliver Palmer, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw. No Afrika Bambaataa? And there needs to be more Public Enemy--a couple of singles from "It takes a Nation of Millions..." (Rebel Without a Pause?) and the classic "911 is a Joke" off of "Fear of a Black Planet"...and the song "Express Yourself" off of NWA's "Straight Outta Compton" (it's still amusing to hear guys like Dre saying things like smoking weed will "give a brother brain damage/and brain damage on the mic don't manage.")

geeta, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
can anyone name some other non-obvious old school (let's say pre-86/87) tracks that really rock the house? i especially like the extended versions of late 70s/early 80s party raps. putting together a massive mix. thanks.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

hip hop died in 86 as break dancing was pretty much done and rap music was becoming more commercial thanks mostly to def jam so i would say 93 is when rap pretty much was dead after eric b and rakim broke up but the beastie boys and public enemy did good a little while longer!

xzanfar, Monday, 28 March 2022 15:55 (three years ago)

That's a brilliant copypasta. Any idea where it originated from?
