i'm semi-new to the area, just got here a few months ago, and am starting to get an idea of the local bands. i already have records and am a big fan of espers, mazarin and the lilys. there's a band called the spinto band that i like and just ordered thier cd. i know there are a load of other bands of note and figured i'd start a thread about it to see what was going on. i live in bucks county right now, so getting into town to see a lot of live music isn't currently as easy as i'd like it to be. any suggestions and opinions would be terrific.

Like Moving Insects, National Eye, Buried Beds, Grammar Debate are up your alley, from the sound of it -- all sort of part of the same close-knit scene.

BARDO POND.

Also The Teeth are good.

oh yeah! i heard few of the songs by a couple of those bands from some other thread on here about a comp of local music. the like moving insects stuff was great. do they play around a lot? do mazarin or espers play a lot? i saw them both recently and got the feeling it wasn't something that happens all too often.

LMI plays out a fair amount -- they are fantastic live. Much better than on CD. I think Mazarin is playing a fair amount right now because they're promoting an album. They may be touring though, not sure.

Buried Beds are really worth seeing too -- their drummer is also LMI's drummer (and I think maybe another member is now shared as well?) and he's probably my favorite little-known drummer. And a nice guy too.

Abbadabba Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 4 December 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

You might like Cynthia Mason also, and even if you don't, she's worth seeing just for her guitarist, Larry D. Brown.

I like Trouble Everyday, Audible and the Spinto Band.

'Twan (miccio), Sunday, 4 December 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Audible is pretty good. Spinto Band are also pretty good -- they're on Bar None records now, I believe.

Dr. Dog is another Philly band that has gotten some brief hype in the last year or two -- I like them better recorded than live but they're good.

BARDO POND.

Beat me to it. Anyhow, we're all just passing the time until Jess and Maria find this thread and spit out the 80 000 word Rough Guide to Philly Bands.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 4 December 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

oh somehow I don't think jess will be helping

'Twan (miccio), Sunday, 4 December 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 4 December 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and I forgot that you live in Philly proper now!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 4 December 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

THA DELPHONIx

I've seen Bardo Pond 2 or 3 times since I moved here and I don't think I need to see them ever again. The music's a half-way enjoyable slog but the singer needs to retire (or learn how to sing).

'Twan (miccio), Sunday, 4 December 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

i just did some google searches on bardo pond. sounds pretty interesting. they are on matador, so that could mean good stuff, i guess.

peter x (bucksbreeze), Sunday, 4 December 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

the plain parade songs from the sixth borough comp should give you some names to check out. (listen to it here). It's a bunch of philly bands covering philly bands (and frankly the song quality is improved for some by this). full disclsoure - i've karaoked with the pp folks numerous times.

I can agree with this statement.

i listened to the comp a few hours ago, streamed it. it had some really good songs. i like that bitter bitter weeks song. like any comp i have ever heard, it has its ups and downs. i thought the cover of the espers song was pretty bad.

peter x (bucksbreeze), Monday, 5 December 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

there are tonz of philly threads, but you might like this one for past & present capabilities:

i thought the cover of the espers song was pretty bad.

i think its kind of incredible, but for full disclosure, that's my comp we're talking about. how golden ball managed to distill a really long and slooooow song into 2 minutes of hyper-proggy goodness [emph on the hyper] makes me smile.

There was a band called diagram I didn't end up seing because I left earlier at a show, for refernce's sake the show was called "Mini shoegazer fest 3" although 2 of the three bands I saw I'd say were much closer to some sort of ambient space-rock.

Tokyo Ghost Stories (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Monday, 5 December 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

yeah, diagram. they're good!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 5 December 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

The Burning Brides are from Philly, I think.

Also, aren't The Spinto Band from Delaware?

cdwill, Monday, 5 December 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

what's up with man man? thier stuff sounds pretty batty.

peter x (bucksbreeze), Monday, 5 December 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

moderator, lock thread.

i saw that thread. i guess i was hoping to have people chime in and just give some info about bands they like, as opposed to a long list of names. i didn't mean to ruffle feathers.

peter x (bucksbreeze), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

Before this gets locked, I'll throw in a few that I like, generally more on the "indie-pop" side of things than those mentioned so far:

--the Snow Fairies (upbeat catchy pop, they play around town from time to time)
--Soltero (singer-songwritery-type, but good. Moved here recently from Boston, has played one show so far but likely to play more)
--Harbor Lights (male/female duo playing quiet, gentle songs. Dont know if they've released much but I've seen them play a couple times and enjoyed it)

Those are the three that come to mind for me first, but I've only lived here a year...

dave heaton (daveheaton), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

This thread is for lowercase philadelphia bands. We're not interested in your capital "P"hiladelphia "B"ands.

Abbadabba Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

i DLed some bardo pond stuff and liked some of it a whole lot. don't usually like such slow and thick "acid" music, but they had some great songs and power. are they a well-known band in the area?

peter x (bucksbreeze), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

I certainly know the name.

Another big Philly band you may run across is The Capitol Years. They're a garage/brittish-invasion-style band, and fantastic live. They're not the most original band I've ever heard but very good at what they do - if they'd gotten started a couple years earlier they probably could have ridden the strokes/hives/vines/white stripes wave.

Abbadabba Berman (Hurting), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

BARDO POND are known the world over!
