new tropicalia compilation on soul jazz

Has anyone heard this yet? It's got very comprehensive liner notes - 50 pages on the history of Brazil and the major influences on the tropicalistas, focusing especially on the years 1958-72, from the rise of Bossa Nova with Joao Gilberto to tropicalia's fall after the exile of Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. The tracklist's excellent, and features Tom Ze and Jorge Ben, unlike Polygram's tropicalia comps, Tropicalia: 30 Anos, and the more similar one-disc Tropicalia Essentials. Missing Nara Leao's "Lindoneia", however, as well as any version of "Baby" - maybe because this one's defining tropicalia more strictly. Also, despite the long liner notes, it lacks the translated lyrics Tropicalia Essentials had.

Here's the tracklist:

1. Gilberto Gil - Bat Macumba
2. Os Mutantes - A Minha Menina
3. Gal Costa - Tuareg
4. Gilberto Gil & Os Mutantes - Domingo No Parque
5. Caetano Veloso - Alfomega
6. Gal Costa - Sebastiana
7. Gilberto Gil - Procissao
8. Caetano Veloso - Irene
9. Os Mutantes - Ave Genghis Khan
10. Jorge Ben - Take It Away, My Brother Charles
11. Tom Ze - Jimmy, Renda-Se
12. Os Mutantes - Ando Meio Desligado
13. Caetano Veloso - Tropicalia
14. Tom Ze - Quero Sambal Meu Ben
15. Gal Costa - Vou Recomecar
16. Os Mutantes - Panis et Circenses
17. Tom Ze - Gloria
18. Os Mutantes - Quem Tem Nedo de Brincar de Amor
19. Caetano Veloso - Lost in the Paradise
20. Os Mutantes - Bat Macumba

What do the tropicalia fans out there think?

Kareem Estefan (Kareem Estefan), Sunday, 4 December 2005 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

i don't know the tracks necessarily, or haven't compared them to my cds, but couldn't they have picked a few more obscure, not already reissued artists?

i say weak

jaxon (jaxon), Sunday, 4 December 2005 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

is it out? it seems to be much delayed. anyway, from the tracklisting, as an introduction to tropicalia it looks great. pretty much all the hits are on there. hopefully they'll end up doing a volume 2 and dig a bit deeper.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Sunday, 4 December 2005 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

Great selection of songs!

There aren't very many tropicalia artists to choose from, if you go by Veloso's description of the movement in Tropical Truth.

If you're looking for a primer, you can't do any better than this.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Sunday, 4 December 2005 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

OK, but then "Alfomega" and "Irene" are from Veloso's '69 album, which is after the movement. Why were those picked over "Alegria Alegria," which is one of the ultimate Tropicalismo songs? I also think Gil's "Miserere Nobis" should be on there (just take off one of the versions of "Bat Macumba").

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 4 December 2005 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

Or "Geleia Geral" for Gil. The Mutantes track choices are odd, too. Both of the first two songs from the third album? (I would have like to have seen "Algo Mais" on there - their Shell TV ad commercial - a true Tropicalist statement).

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 4 December 2005 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

I thought "Baby" was one of the canonical Tropicalia songs--isn't that correct? Under what def. would it be excluded?

eek, Sunday, 4 December 2005 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

No "Miserere Nobis" "Geleia Geral" "Baby"? wtf

I think SoulJazz goes for "quirky" & "unpredictable" rather than classic summary. I had this same problem w/ New York Noise No "Moody" or "Cavern" wtf ? though I do enjoy listening to it.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Sunday, 4 December 2005 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

and not putting DNA's "Blonde Red Head" on NYN was perverse!

now back to Brazil

m coleman (lovebug starski), Sunday, 4 December 2005 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

I'm really getting turned on to Tropicalia these days. So should I pick up this CD (the liner notes are a big plus), or is there a better CD for me, the initiate? I already have a lot of the stuff from the original Tropicalia comp.

BTW, I'm especially liking what what I've heard by Jorge Ben, such as the killer "Hermes Trismegisto e Sua Celeste Tábua de Esmeralda"...but I have no idea how to pronounce his name. I've pretty much got Caetano (CAI-DAH-NOH) and Gilberto (JEEL-BEH-TOH) down. Is Jorge pronounced like the Spanish? And Ben, I'm guessing, sounds something like "bane".

viborgu, Sunday, 4 December 2005 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

"Marginalia II" is another Tropicalia period Gil whopper left off. At least they got "Domingo no Parque" on there.

I could understand putting some immediately post-movement, '69 era stuff on there, but having two tracks each from the third Mutantes album and the '69 Veloso album while a lot of the big Tropicalismo whoppers are left off is bad.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 4 December 2005 21:07 (nineteen years ago)

I heard this was not going to get a release till feb next year in spite of the SJ website stating a November release. I seem to remember the same happening to the Arthur Russell comp. at the same time of year.

Fraser Saunderson (fray bentos), Sunday, 4 December 2005 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

maybe the third mutantes album was the compiler's favourite? i think not having any version of 'baby' on there is the biggest omission for an introduction to tropicalia.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Sunday, 4 December 2005 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

Has anybody actually seen or heard this, though? I keep seeing a new release date of February sometime, so I reckon it's been pushed back.

Dark Horse, Sunday, 4 December 2005 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

viborgu, what I've heard is that "Jorge" is not pronounced like the Spanish--more like "zhorzh," if you know what I mean by "zh"

eek, Sunday, 4 December 2005 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

i seen it at Other Music.

Beta (abeta), Sunday, 4 December 2005 23:14 (nineteen years ago)

It's been put back to tie in with a Tropicalia exhibition/season at the Barbican in London, though finished copies do exist.

snotty moore, Monday, 5 December 2005 00:08 (nineteen years ago)

I picked it up in Other Music yesterday, though it's not up on Soul Jazz's site yet for me to confirm release dates.

Loving it as I listen to it more, and I do think it's quite a good primer (again, putting this up against the Polygram collection or the original Tropicalia ou Panis et Circenses project, it's got Tom Ze + Jorge Ben, which is a definite plus), if missing some classics. Hadn't thought about how "Algeria, Algeria" isn't on there, that's really inexcusable. And as for the '69 Veloso tracks and the third Mutantes album, the only justification (aside from the tracks being excellent) seems to be that in sound they fit in well with the rest, if not in chronology.

Kareem Estefan (Kareem Estefan), Monday, 5 December 2005 01:04 (nineteen years ago)

almost every other track on this is os mutantes!

i love love love 'em, but i want to see more variety!

geeta (geeta), Monday, 5 December 2005 06:42 (nineteen years ago)

nice call on including the mutantes' version of 'panis et circenses,' though...it's way better than the gilberto gil version (veloso and gil wrote it, right?) on some days when the weather is sunny and it's all green out, it's my favorite song in the world.

god i'm such a hippie.

geeta (geeta), Monday, 5 December 2005 06:47 (nineteen years ago)

I think is a good comps and a very good primer, i picked it even if i have the key cds of tropicalismo, and i would have love more song afters the days of tropicalismo, since there are gems of songs and i don't mind if they are "after" the title of the compilation, i tjhink '70 Brazialian are less expolred and know (by me at least) . If Soul Jazz in the future would love to make a volume two, they have to put "baby" and "alegria" in there anyway, and why not "is proibito proibir" the live recording (i never heard it, seems that is more rage from the public than music)? Also more '70 Tom Ze and some from the firsts solo albums from Os Mutantes members, which i read are interesting in a chill "end of the illusion of the '60 ways" (like other burnt in the coldness of broken dreams album like Lennon Plastic Ono Band, Barret solo, Oar, Neil Young "Tonight is the night", etc...). And Nara Leao or something from the Duprat solo album). Ok, it's not me who compiles these comps anyway, but i think make comps is always a tricky and often ungrateful affair. Looking now for the New York Noise 2 & 3 and the Early Hip Hop ones from SJ.

"i don't know the tracks necessarily, or haven't compared them to my cds, but couldn't they have picked a few more obscure, not already reissued artists? i say weak "

Wonderful! Haven't heard the songs but wants something more obscure and not reissued. HAHAHAAAA! This messageboard is such great entertainment...

And by the way "Baby" sucks, that's probably why they left it off.

Bolster, Monday, 5 December 2005 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

No. I agree with Geeta that the Mutantes version of "Panis et Circensis" is the good choice, but the Gal Costa version of "Baby" would be my choice for that one. "Baby" is certainly one of the classic sets of tropicalia lyrics/classic tropicalia songs.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 5 December 2005 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

It seems to me that buying Tropicalia and Tropicalia comps has become like buying, say, Yardbirds records.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 5 December 2005 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

Speaking of Gal Costa, has anyone heard anything about potential re-re-releases of her first two self-titles albums? I'd like that.

matt2 (matt2), Monday, 5 December 2005 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

Does Jorge Ben fall into Tropicalia under any definition?

As a one-disk sampler, this is fine, i guess, but there are enough tropicalia / brazil comps out there -- the only reason to buy this one over any other, IMHO, is because you like the liner notes.

Mitya (mitya), Monday, 5 December 2005 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

"i don't know the tracks necessarily, or haven't compared them to my cds, but couldn't they have picked a few more obscure, not already reissued artists? i say weak "

Wonderful! Haven't heard the songs but wants something more obscure and not reissued. HAHAHAAAA! This messageboard is such great entertainment...

i meant i don't know the song titles. i couldn't tell you the song title of almost any album i've got, it's just not something i memorize.

i've got pretty much every song on the comp on cd already.

jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 5 December 2005 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

Ha! I don't know which title goes with which song either. A lot of times the title is in Latin and then maybe they sing it in Portuguese-it's just one little project I can't be bothered with.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 5 December 2005 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

im not very well versed in tropicalia but this comp doesnt seem to stretch itself very far. os mutantes have most of their stuff reissued, ditto for pretty much everyone on that list. also, no os brazoes?

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 5 December 2005 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

Does Jorge Ben fall into Tropicalia under any definition?

Under the definition "cool Brazilian pop/rock from the late 60s" yeah, I think he had an album or two in that period. A lot of people seem to define Tropicalia that way. But under more meaningful definitions--e.g. what was perceived as tropicalia at the time--no.

And by the way "Baby" sucks, that's probably why they left it off.

If "Baby" sucks, I guess you're "Baby." That song more or less encompasses Tropicalia.

eek, Monday, 5 December 2005 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

Oh and this is a perfectly fine compilation, but the thing is, most of the records it pulls from are worth listening to in their entirety if you like this stuff. If you can find them, that is. Obviously to get a more satisfactory compilation you'd need to have more than one disc.

eek, Monday, 5 December 2005 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

Maria, it would seem like they were restricting themselves to people who were actually a part of the "movement." I don't know why the Jorge Ben track is on there - maybe there's some connection?

Anyone know what that Veloso track at the end with the English title is?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 5 December 2005 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

caetano veloso - lost in the paradise

stirmonster (stirmonster), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

major xpost, Gal Costa's first two albums pop up on Dusty Groove once in a while, you can put yourself on a mailer so you'll get notified when they come in.

Keith C (lync0), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

Oh okay, duh, that's on the '69 album as well.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

Maria, it would seem like they were restricting themselves to people who were actually a part of the "movement." I don't know why the Jorge Ben track is on there - maybe there's some connection?

i understand that tim but it doesnt make much sense to put together a compilation with only 4 or 5 different artists, you know? or is the genre that limited?

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

The genre is that limited.

mcd (mcd), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

Tim (or others), have you heard Caetano's (mostly) english album from '71? very, very good

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drf100/f110/f11010zg6bm.jpg

jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

the genre really is fairly limited. maybe volume 2 (if there is one) will throw in some rita lee, nara leao (who i am intrigued to hear) and rogerio duprat.

xpost

stirmonster (stirmonster), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

I LOVE THE '71 ALBUM.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

I am shocked, simply shocked, at this compilation's exclusion of tracks from the Tropicalia 2 album.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 5 December 2005 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

'nother major xpost

Thanks Keith C for the heads up, it looks like they even have it now.

matt2 (matt2), Monday, 5 December 2005 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

yeah double thx for the heads up on the Gal comin back into stock at Dusty Groove - I've been waiting for the second one for months. (Tropicalia collection now almost complete, as soon as I can track down the second Os Mutantes album...)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 5 December 2005 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

as soon as I can track down the second Os Mutantes album...)

dude, just write me an email. (but if it's like last time, you probably won't get it for another year)

jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 5 December 2005 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

A much more interesting compilation would be one that contrasted the tracks on this disc with contrasts the "tropicalia proper" stuff with the other MPB and jovem guarda stuff of the era. Particularly if you're going to all the trouble of 50 pages of liner notes and then coming up with a fairly narrow set of tracks.

Mitya (mitya), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

Good point.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

i am actually reading Tropical Truth right now, and have been thinking about putting together an accompanying track list.

Mitya (mitya), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

strange that this can be bought in new york but not in the uk yet.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Monday, 5 December 2005 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

the Nara Leao is straight bossa nova. don't expect any freakouts.
Clube Moderna is a fine comp that came out earlier this year and covers 70's MPB, or rather all of Nascimento's Clube de Esquina folks.

Beta (abeta), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 00:46 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone recommend any good Jovem Guarda compilations?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 01:21 (nineteen years ago)

tim, have you heard any Tim Maia? i recently got two self titled cds from 70 & 73. he might be a bit more brazilian soul than Jovem Guarda (which i honestly don't know that much about , yet). it looks like this comp might be kinda cool. and here's what looks like a decent introduction (but honestly, i just got home from work and am too tired to read all of it)

jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 04:13 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
A very obvious comp from Soul Jazz who should know better.
Just stuff taken from the key albums - no surprises and no unreleased tracks, which might actually take some work and research to find.

Jorge Ben can actually be included as he basically revolutionised samba by making it a bit more rocky and in turn influenced caetano, gil etc.

Andy, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 01:27 (nineteen years ago)

....as regards to Tim Maia, his best work may be the 2 albums he did when he joined a ufo cult in the 70s and which he then disowned, Racional vol. 1 and 2. Excellent hard driving soul-funk albums. It may be possible to find them both on one cd.

Andy, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 01:47 (nineteen years ago)

I just got this today - it's sorta obvious, but it's really listenable and the packaging is fabulous. It's a pretty great primer, that's for sure. I would imagine that's what they were going for.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 01:51 (nineteen years ago)

five months pass...
I don't get why a primer needs to include hard-to-find obscure, unreleased tracks either! It would be a good idea for a Vol.2 sure...

I'd add a second CD as per Mitya's suggestion A much more interesting compilation would be one that contrasted the tracks on this disc with contrasts the "tropicalia proper" stuff with the other MPB and jovem guarda stuff of the era. Particularly if you're going to all the trouble of 50 pages of liner notes and then coming up with a fairly narrow set of tracks.

And considering the liner notes take the time to detail that a lot of these records had sorta experimental & different lyrics (not in English) that were a big part of it's identity, the lack of lyrics is an unfortunate oversight.

Also, if they're going to highlight 5 important artists instead of 20 single tracks... I wish they weren't scattered all over the disk, to make the comparisons easier. I'll have to try rearranging the tracks this way sometime though, it might not work.

Oh, and it's great! I know sh*t all about this stuff, but I sure as hell feel it a whole lot more than Beck writing a regurgitated "Tropicalia" song, or mostly any other rock (not that all of it is rock-y) music in sight from 2006.

fandango (fandango), Friday, 2 June 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

five months pass...
Just wanted to note that the mastering on this disc is great. Sure, you might have these songs already but they sound a lot better here. I wish Veloso's 1969 album or Tropicalia ou Panis et Circenses would get reissued with this kind of fidelity.

Edward III (edward iii), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

All new to me - and I can't stop playing this one. I'm sure this will have true Tropicalians rolling their eyes
16. Os Mutantes - Panis et Circenses

Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountain Dog (Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountai), Monday, 20 November 2006 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

Sometimes, I think that is my favorite song ever.

Ivan G (Ivan), Monday, 20 November 2006 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

I love Caetano, Mutantes &c, but "Panis" always drove me nuts.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Monday, 20 November 2006 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure this will have true Tropicalians rolling their eyes

As someone who owns a ton of tropicalia-era stuff, I think "Panis et Circenses" is a great song and who cares if it's over-compiled.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

this one actually looks interesting and not just a primer on the subject - ie. there's actually some things i haven't heard (of) on it.

where's Tim Maia

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 24 August 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

Out back with his chocolate.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Friday, 24 August 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

That Novos Baianos is excellent, all their stuff is worth picking up.

oscar, Saturday, 25 August 2007 05:24 (eighteen years ago)

so glad they chose 'amor' by secos e molhados. that song rules! looks great but i think they could have picked a better rita lee song. and yes, tim maia is very conspicuous by his absence.

stirmonster, Saturday, 25 August 2007 06:29 (eighteen years ago)

Respect to soul jazz for digging these tracks out. Post-tropicalia Brazilian pop is virtually unknown outside Brazil, and I shall definitely be getting this.

Can't wait til they get on to the 1980s.

Daniel Giraffe, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 12:29 (eighteen years ago)

Continuing along this thought process, I'm also looking forward to some future manguebeat compilation when they eventually get on to the 90s.

Daniel Giraffe, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 12:32 (eighteen years ago)

ugh, i tried to get into manguebeat a while back and it sounded pretty dire to these ears. i realized it wasn't something i would have listened to if it was sung in english and the only reason i was giving it the chance was because it was from a different country.

jaxon, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

Both compilations are excellent (brazil70 and tropicalia), the Tropicalia album could use some variety sure, but they're amongst the most essential compilations of the era I've seen. Hope they release another one soon.
