Multilayered single female voice S/D (no avantgarde edition)

I guess I'm a sucker for this trick. Even when set firmly in slightly bombastic Lilywhite production, I love to hear Kirsty MacColl's harmonies (delivered in a voice that's slightly "wrong" for it, if you see what I mean); even if she gets a "defend the indefensible" thread once in a while, Enya's hundreds of vocal overdubs hits me like nicotine marshmallows might. So both of those are a Search from me.

The parenthesis in the thread title simply means: I'm not looking for Diamanda Galás recommendations here, nor other stuff on the edge of anything. Comfort wallowing is my aim, really. Once you've read this far, feel free to ignore this part, though, and offer whatever you will.

Kirsty MacColl indefensible??? Fighting talk that is!

fandango (fandango), Monday, 5 December 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

No no no, Enya has been described as! Note the semicolon!

cutty: I'm a 20-year member of the KATE. BUSH. 4EVAH. camp, but this is not quite what I had in mind with this question.

Bush stuff is far more "multiple great vocal parts correctly combined" than "multitracked block chords to make it sound beguiling". "Night Scented Stock" is the closest KB track I can think of that fits what I was thinking of.

(This distinction in my head is not discernable from the original wording, though.)

linda perhacs does a bit of this

Stina Nordenstam! Tori Amos's "Father Lucifer"! Orbital's vocal tracks!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 5 December 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

also lots of shoegaze....slowdive for instance had a bunch of female-led tracks with marshmallowy multilayered vocals.

geeta (geeta), Monday, 5 December 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

Cocteau Twins duh!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 5 December 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

of course! ned to thread!

geeta (geeta), Monday, 5 December 2005 05:04 (twenty years ago)

Stina's voice is, to say the least, an acquired taste - she almost qualifies as "on the edge" of something. And she really doesn't do the massed harmonies in a Kirsty MacColl fashion ... but she does have some gorgeous moments, especially on And she closed her eyes. I considered recommending her too.

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Monday, 5 December 2005 05:11 (twenty years ago)

The coda of Joni Mitchell's "Other People's Parties" comes to mind.

As does the vamp in the middle of Alicia Keys's "Fallin'."

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 5 December 2005 05:12 (twenty years ago)

not sure if its all female, or if its just one voice, and it might be avant garde but it sure is comforting and curd duca's "touch" is probably the ne plus ultra of this idea.

dabnis coleman's ghost (dubplatestyle), Monday, 5 December 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

Imogen Heap

Sincerely, (Paul in Santa Cruz), Monday, 5 December 2005 06:22 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the suggestions so far, people! I shall investigate.

i don't know what sounds worse- the majority of artists listed on this thread, or nicotine marshmallows..

joanna newsom has some pretty eery and beautiful overdubs goin on.

Robin Samples (Robin Samples), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

Geek the Girl by Lisa Germano. The entire album sounds like this.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

neko case's "letter from an occupant" vocal is probably my favorite example, but not good for wallowing. i think judee sill used double-tracking on a couple songs from her albums, but she may be closer to the kate bush overdubbing, but not double-tracking.

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Edith Frost does this sometimes.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

of course! ned to thread!

What, huh? Er, did anyone mention Imogen Heap yet? (I only just realized she was the singer in Frou Frou, which surely got their name from "Frou Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires," etc.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Karen Carpenter owns this thread

Aqua - Eurythmics (I heard it again recently, and it is beeeautiful)

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

:-)

Good on yer.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

probably not the lane you're looking to tread, but....

the softies' cover of the would-be-good's "perfect dear." or for that matter any stuff from the would-be-goods (or the softies, but they are so often boring).

dear nora. i'm thinkin in particular of "phildelphia" from the way things change 7" on red square.

Dan Gr (certain), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Charming Hostess to thread. Quite complex and progressive at
times, but never difficult or dissonant. Lots of juicy eastern
european folk influences (for the uninitiated, remember the
haunting choral numbers in the "In The Bedroom" film soundtrack)

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Judee Sill is a good one, look for "The Kiss"

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

Charming Hostess are terrific, but a little more challenging than "comfort wallowing," considering most of their album is about genocide!

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
oh piana!
