How was this sound created? Was this created with a drum machine or was this a gated sound effect?

both at the same time. a wrinkle in time if you will.

In the beginning was the word and the word was god - a being of pure sound who created a universe made from sound. In 1986, the members of Cameo embarked on an elaborate and dangerous week-long ritual known as the "Blackmon Working" intended to summon god to earth in the form of the ultimate snare drum sound. The results sent a shockwave around the world but the experience took a psychic and spiritual toll on the members of Cameo from which they were never able to recover.

I never liked that Cameo snare/clap sound. It's like the old P-Funk clap sound but taken to (excessive) '80s extremes. I found/find it unpleasant on the ear.

I'm sorry, something must be wrong with my vision, for a second there it seemed like somebody had said something bad about "Word Up"

Reminds me that the 80s poll is still lurking out there. Wonder where this'll place...

A whole year of Music Technology was devoted to that snare sound, back in the 80's.

My theory is that he is writing an essay about synthesizers.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 03:13 (nineteen years ago)

thats possible too

For a second, I thought you were referring to Blackmon and this struck as a very elegant reading of "Word Up." The bass just crushes.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 03:17 (nineteen years ago)

er, "struck me." Carry on.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 03:17 (nineteen years ago)

Yah, I don't like that sound either.
