how is it that the white stripes are fine with using modern tech in all their videos but loathe to use it in their music?

i like the conflict, but its odd theyre fine with state of the art fare for the vids. still, great videos. was a little dissapointed when i saw their concert video as that looked like it had been made in 1964 but obviously wasnt so seemed fake and therefore pointless. they should have got gondry or someone to do it.

I guess they like the way the older audio recording equipment sounds, but they don't necessarily prefer the look of older video/film equipment.

And they outsource their video output, they don't direct/produce it themselves, so they relinquish a certain amount of control over it.

Though it would be awesome if their website was done up like a vintage 1996 geocities site.

maybe they see the music as their art, and therefore subject to certain aesthetic considerations, but the video simplay as part of the distribution and marketing process. After all, if they were really extreme, thye would insist that jet powered planes could not be used to deliver their CDs, which in turn not be sold in shops using barcode scanners, etc...

a lot of the gimmickry in some of the videos is olde-style stop action animation & double exposure

maybe they think their videos are cool.

maybe they think their records sound cool.

maybe they're all happy and content and stuff.

maybe they've heard that consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds

also, equipment wise, they use tons of modern stuff. I've seen them live like 4 times and Jack has always been playing his modern, red Ibanez guitar with a digitech pedal and I believe Meg was using a very modern drum kit as well. They recorded Elephant I believe using all vintage equipment, but other than that they haven't claimed to be steadfastly tied to it.

Massive sound processing in the studio and on stage at this point.
Their "third member" is certainly a sound man of no antique dimension.

you totally caught them in a contradiction!

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Monday, 5 December 2005 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

It is the artist's paradox of which we speak: theirs is the marriage of opposites, the philosopher's stone.

You could have all four of those Michel Gondry videos 20 years ago. No digital trickery there.

I think the real way to look at it is to ask if you could have all those Russell Mulcahy videos now.

a highly talented one, also.

Who is their live sound engineer?

Great point. Not sure about 'The Denial Twist' though, assuming it uses a morphing/warping technique similar to the one first developed by Michel's brother for use in the Rolling Stones 'Like A Rolling Stone' video.
