An amazing piece of pop songwriting. Great chorus. What say you?

Classic, sez I.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

without no doubt it's heart-stoppingly great…

veronica moser (veronica moser), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

When there was a thread about "Nights On Broadway" I said that that was the best Bee Gees song outside of Saturday Night Fever, because "How Deep Is Your Love" is now and forever shall be my favourite Bee Gees song.

Cause we're living in a world of fools
Breakin’ us down
When they all should let us be
We belong to you and me

Confounded (Confounded), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

that particular stanza always stix in my ear-craw

"we belong to you and me" -- so so 70s like the title of some forgotten psychobabble selfhelp best seller "pop psychology"

classic, actually more enjoyable now than when it ruled radio 24/7

m coleman (lovebug starski), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

classic. played this song everyday for the first couple of months I was at college and still managed not to wear it out

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

I suppose it's nice, but give me "Nights on Broadway" and "Lonely Days" over it EVERY. DAMN. TIME.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Or "Tragedy."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

mmmmmmmmmmmmm

mies van der rohffle (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Beautiful song, beautiful harmonies, works way better on acoustic guitar than you would probably think it does.

Ash (ashbyman), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

classic as all fuck. barry gibb is a criminally underrated songwriter.

Lawrence the Looter (Lawrence the Looter), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Classic classic classic

Dan (Yay) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

No fucking doubt.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Easily my favorite Bee Gees song.

darin (darin), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

It's been one of my favorite songs ever since I became aware of my ears.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Reminds me of fourth grade without an effort. Classic.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

not my favorite bee gees song, but nice.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

SUPER-CLASSIC.

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

I'd say classic. Never quite liked "Staying Alive" or "Night Fever", but their ballads were always ace.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

Classic. Who's going to dud it?

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

i really need to know

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

classic but shitty

Robin Samples (Robin Samples), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

Nothing short of awesome.

And how about the title track from the "Spirits Having Flown" LP? That's easily one of their most incredible songs.

I did a search for Bee Gees threads and it appears that they have not been discussed as much here as they deserve to be. I may inaugurate some, such as "S/D '70's Bee Gees", or "A Kick in the Head is Worth Eight in the Pants C/D?", or "Most Lugubrious Bee Gees Song"...

Please feel free to beat me to the punch if anyone feels like these are potentially fruitful topics for discussion.

Dell (Dell), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

I like the fact that "How Deep Is Your Love" doesn't overuse the Barry Gibb falsetto-leads, the way the other three Bee Gees' "Saturday Night Fever" originals occasionally did. And the occasional overuse of said high-pitched harmonies is the ONLY thing I'll say against either of those four pop masterpieces. UTTERLY CLASSIC.

Myonga Von Boogie (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

The bridge to the chorus on "Night Fever", the "Sweet city woman..." part, always kills me. Soooooo good...

Dell Y. (Dell), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

"Beautiful song, beautiful harmonies, works way better on acoustic guitar than you would probably think it does."

Anyone who likes the Take That version (like me) already know this.

Classic. (for both).

Viz (Viz), Thursday, 8 December 2005 01:11 (twenty years ago)

It's one of those songs that reminds me of someone I used to know. And that's all right, so classic. But I prefer 60's Bee Gees material...To Love Somebody, Massachusetts, and, as Alex pointed out, Lonely Days, which must've been 1970. (Damn, that reminds me of someone too)

jim wentworth (wench), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

Supa Classik

Cause we're living in a world of fools
Breakin’ us down
When they all should let us be
We belong to you and me

Not as classic as the "When you come to me/on a summer breeze" couplet, but classic nonetheless.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 8 December 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

my favorite bee gees song too

oops (Oops), Thursday, 8 December 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

Stone classic, but not AS classic as How Deep Is Your Love by my man Keith Sweat!
