he hadn't gotten famous thru CSNY."
:0
this inexplicably really bruised the part of my heart that is occupied by neil love.

is there anything i can/should do?

(I also felt inexplicably like this deserved its own thread.)

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

bullshit. neil rulez. CSN droolz.

don't doubt yourself.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

? CSNY did not make Neil Young famous.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

no one would care about CSNY if it wasn't for Neil Young

gear (gear), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

haha - true

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

i know its just the equivalent of saying neil is not that interesting, but its actually REALLY hard for me to understand how anyone could think that. not interesting? I FEEL CONFLICTED about people having their own opinions! jesus, maybe i should step back from Neil.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

no, yer on target with the neil love. he's the man. whoever told you people only care about CSNY are clearly retarded.

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

regardless of whether they find Neil interesting or not, the statement that CSNY is solely responsible for Neil's fame is just not factually accurate.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

i guess they meant no one would have noticed him...but i don't know what that means. its bizarre. i think i'm being baited and its working!

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

So what if he Young did get famous with CSN? How would that ruin your affection? George Michael got famous in Wham! (admittedly not the soundest analogy; Wham! is 100 times better that CSN, even with Y).

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

it doesn't ruin it, it was just the idea that he was not important - like a blip beyond the csny thing.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

"I'm really not that into him

I'd go with j. Mascis"

have i entered the twilight zone?

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

I suppose if your probelm with Neil Young is that he's too melodic and enunciates.

'Twan (miccio), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

isn't the most famous csny song a y song?

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

You're out of your mind for caring about this. Do you like his music? Okay then, that's all you need to know.

Jealous guy whistle solo go!, Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

reality chick.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

realty chink.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

ah typos.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

"? CSNY did not make Neil Young famous."

Yeah it did. He might be second only to Dylan in terms of sheer talent, but he sure benefited a great deal from his friends' name recognition. Stephen's song "For What It's Worth" was the big Buffalo Springfield hit. Nobody bought Neil's first, self-titled solo album. He was enough of a nobody that the original idea was he'd join up to be a backing musician live on stage for CSN, but then when everyone showed up at his place in Topango he played them "Helpless," and Graham and David were like, 'fuck.' Stephen, who was as competitive as all get-out with Neil, was still a good friend, and couldn't deny his buddy's talent. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere came out in 69, while Neil was on tour with CSNY, Woodstock included, which helped sales of his second album tremendously. Then Deja Vu came out, then Harvest came out, with his only solo #1 single, "Heart of Gold," and then he was Mr. Superstar.

water eyes, Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

You're assuming that this person is equating obscurity with lack of talent. Since when was that ever the case? I think it's very true that his public visibility would be lower if he hadn't joined CSN. Who cares what avenue people say he took to get famous?

musically (musically), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

it was in the sense that he only matters in terms of csny etc., otherwise the world would never have noticed.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

That's my point entirely...they're saying he would have been obscure without his presence in CSNY. Why do you assume "would not have been popular" equals "would have not been good"?

musically (musically), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

i don't. he does. and it does boil down to that exact thing. thk you. and i no longer care about this. ha HAAAAAAAAAA!

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

and i'm "counter-culture" for liking him.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

Neil Young did not play at Woodstock w/ CSN, did he? It's just the three of them in the movie.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

And it was like their second ever gig or something so I don't think they were on tour.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure he played at Woodstock. he didn't want to be filmed.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

i assumed he played alone (that could be weird), but maybe he didn't want to be filmed and therefore didnt' play - so you might be correct.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

This site says he did play a few songs with them during their set, but wasn't in the group yet.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

...they had ears.

Amity Wong (noodle vague), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

i'm saying that they didn't. i said i'm saying that they didn't.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

"Sea of Madness," CSNY with Young singing lead, is on the original Woodstock 3LP. During the applause after one of the songs, the MC says "Crosby, Stills...Nash.................and Young," like he's taking a head count.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

Young had a gold album before joining up with CSN. That sounds pretty successful to me.

Binjominia (Brilhante), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

exactly - Everybody Knows this is Nowhere was obviously ugh, heard. I think maybe folks who don't know his work, don't realize he existed before csny.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 22:38 (nineteen years ago)

My parents know Neil Young because (a) he sang "Heart of Gold"; (b) he was the Y in CSNY. I suspect most Americans know him under similar circumstances.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

TS - "Cortez the Killer" vs. "Our House is a Very Very Very Fine House"

Boy, is that easy.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 22:47 (nineteen years ago)

i've returned to wanting to twist his head off with my bare leg -and not in an erotic way. more in like an enraged monkey way.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

He actually said that you're "counter-culture" for liking him?!? =8-0
Who is that person???

Patrick (Patrick), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 23:49 (nineteen years ago)

a work acquaintance

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 00:06 (nineteen years ago)

In a very twisted sense, the rule-breaking, maverick Neil Young that created "Cortez the Killer" (and Time Fades Away, my fave) is somewhat in debt to C,S,N, & Y. It was the fame and recognition that Young received by particpating in the group as well as making Harvest that led him to realize that the ditch on the side of the road was more interesting than the middle of the road. (I am badly paraphrasing Young from Shakey.)

I think Young's relationship to C,S, & N is pretty interesting. It seems like he goes through phases where he wants to be around them but only at arm's length, as in his request to not be filmed for the Woodstock concert. His request is partly addressed in some C,S, & N I read while bored at Border's. They were in awe of his songwriting, but they seem to have found him kind of distant, puzzling, impenetrable, etc.

Personally, I think all four created so much good music: C,S & N; C,S,N & Y, Young solo, Crosby solo, Stills solo. Hell, I even dig that fruity Nash tune "Our House".

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

At first I read he didn't get famous through CSY New York or something. And just thought what the fuck.
Now I realise what you mean. I really don't know enough about it to answer that though.

Tokyo Ghost Stories (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 02:03 (nineteen years ago)

...he hadn't made HUMAN HIGHWAY." I wish.
