Whats this all about?

Simona, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gimix is a mix sequence created by The Avalanches back in 2000 (I think) and is perhaps the inspirational basis/foundation for their album. Its a hugely entertaining mix of many of the tracks that went on to feature on the album 'Since I Left You' fused terrifically with grooves from the likes of Roy Ayers, Ol Dirty Bastard, Bob Dylan, The Smiths, Cyndi Lauper, Hall & Oates and Daft Punk to name but a few. One of the best things about the glorious set is that it only lasts around 30-40 minutes but seems like double that due to the amount of tracks featured in the set. Download it from Audio Galaxy TODAY and check out the tracklisting here:

Hit the nail right on the head steve. Great mix. I enjoy the Ibiza one as well.

Poops McGee, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mmm, "Simona" sounds threateningly italian :-). Being swiss-italian myself I'm curious about where you're from... Oh, as for the GIMIX, I think the previous answers were esaustive enough, If you've got a speedy connection you can download it also from Audiogalaxy...

Simone, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bleh. I realise my rise to ILX prominence has been rather limited by muh unwillingness to ever actually post, an' all, but, well, I only have broadband for a few more days. And Kazaa is rather banned in these parts, and I can't find an mp3 anywhere.

So might someone upload this somewhere? I haven't much to offer in trade, but I could burn you the tATu album or something.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

do you have any ftp space?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

or are you using soulseek etc?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
In HMV this lunchtime in the new release bit my eye was quite literally stolen by a "brand" "spanking" "new" Avalanches mix CD called "When I Met You" which I had read nothing about anywhere and I was wondering if maybe it was in fact some kind of belated official-ish release of Gimix at long last (I never heard Gimix, I don't really know what's on it or anything). I couldn't make the link upthread work so have nothing to compare the HMV.co.uk site tracklist to, but the tracklist apparently is:

1. Since I Left You-The Avalanches

2. Holiday-Madonna

3. Like A Rolling Stone-Bob Dylan

4. Stay Another Season-The Avalanches

5. Two Hearts In 3/4 Time-The Avalanches

6. A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturday-De La Soul

7. Rapp Dirty-Blowfly

8. Baby Got Yo Money-Ol' Dirty Bastard

9. Running Away-Roy Ayers

10. Stool Pigeon-Kid Creole & The Coconuts

11. Close To You-The Avalanches

12. Crosstown Traffic-Jimi Hendrix

13. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun-Cyndi Lauper

14. The Boy With The Thorn In His Side-The Smiths

15. Turbo-Thomas Bangalter

16. The Kitty Lounge-Thee Madcatt Courtship

17. Land Down Under-Men At Work

18. Electricity-The Avalanches

19. Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)-De La Soul

20. Electric Relaxation-A Tribe Called Quest

21. Oh Yeah-Daft Punk

22. Sandwiches-Detroit Grand Pubahs

23. I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)-Hall & Oates

24. Fatboy Slim Is Fucking In Heaven-Fatboy Slim

25. Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band-The Beatles

26. Jayou-Jurassic 5

27. Groove Is In The Heart-Dee-Lite

28. Dance Electric Boogie-West Street Mob

29. Real Motherfuckin' Music-Gonzalez

30. Little Journey-The Avalanches

31. Diners Only-The Avalanches

32. Billie Jean-Michael Jackson

33. The Climax-Paperclip People

34. Ye Ye De Smell-Fela Kuti & Ginger Baker

35. Got My Mind Made Up-Instant Funk

36. Livin' Thing-Electric Light Orchestra

37. Mickey Mouse Club Theme-Mickey Mouse Club

38. Hey Mr. DJ-Zhane

39. Looking Up To You-Michael Wycoff

40. Together We Are Beautiful-Fern Kinney

41. Tonight May Have To Last Me All My Life-The Avalanches

42. Dreams-Fleetwood Mac

...IS it Gimix? (not that I'd actually buy it or anything because HA the Avalanches are so 2001 and y'know it's just playing records isn't it and also it was import cost and I am not wealthy)

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 17:11 (twenty years ago)

sounds about the same as the breezeblock mix... if so, its pretty good.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 17:13 (twenty years ago)

sounds unofficial, I'm wondering if the quality is good. Also, I don't have any version that includes "Dreams" at the end - my .mp3's cut off before it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 18:56 (twenty years ago)

yes, it indeed is "Gimix", and the version I have does include "Dreams" at the end!

Alex, if the sound quality's up to scratch, just get it - it's worth every penny

Mind Taker, Wednesday, 21 July 2004 19:05 (twenty years ago)

I love Gimix but it was a pain in the rectum to download the other week.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 19:52 (twenty years ago)

oh and - Alex, thank you for reminding me this existed. i just digged it out and put it on, and it still is amazingly wonderful, still EVEN BETTER than "Since I Left You", and that sequence between "Billie Jean" and the Mickey Mouse Club is the still the most joyous thing EVER!

Mind Taker, Wednesday, 21 July 2004 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Yep, definitely Gimix - I remember downloading the 320kbps version using Audiogalaxy on dial-up, it took about a week to download, but it was worth ever second.

I find it odd that occasionally you find these unofficial releases in a chain like HMV - like the 'Germanophone' Kraftwerk & Neu! boots that used to pop up.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 22 July 2004 11:48 (twenty years ago)

what do they DO to Bangalter's 'Turbo' on Gimix? it sounds like a different track to the 'Turbo' i have

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 22 July 2004 12:03 (twenty years ago)

i like the cover

zebedee (zebedee), Thursday, 22 July 2004 12:12 (twenty years ago)

It's listed at a normal price at HMV Online and Amazon, but as unavailable. Bah.

A couple of gemm.com sellers claim to have it, but abroad and for megabucks.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 22 July 2004 13:07 (twenty years ago)

Just download it.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 22 July 2004 13:26 (twenty years ago)

i asked in hmv yesterday and they said everyone was asking about it but they hadn't heard anything. (yes, i know, i'll download it)

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 22 July 2004 13:42 (twenty years ago)

but it's four years old for cryin out loud!

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 22 July 2004 14:06 (twenty years ago)

I know, but I've never had broadband and always wanted it. And I was listening to the Avalanches (well 'Frontier Psychiatrist', which I now kind of hate) in 2000 before all you fuckers so I'm allowed to play catch up with this.

And whaddyaknow - I popped into my HMV on the way home and there it was, for £14.99. It's on TMQ records, which I remember as a bootleg label of yore, and there are no copyright details, so I have no idea how HMV get away with this.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 22 July 2004 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Wanted it = wanted this mix, not broadband, though that too.

[listens a few more seconds]

I love it!

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 22 July 2004 14:36 (twenty years ago)

HMV also keep crates of drugs, guns and giant pandas in their stockrooms

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 22 July 2004 14:37 (twenty years ago)

i finally got the original 'Frontier Psychiatrist' recently, the one with the Dexter samples and other bits not in it yet

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 22 July 2004 14:38 (twenty years ago)

I was going to get a giant panda, but I've already spent about 90 quid on records this week, and they were charging inflated prices.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 22 July 2004 14:39 (twenty years ago)

OK, it's giving me a bit of a headache now. I sometimes used to get this way with the album.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 22 July 2004 15:15 (twenty years ago)

Ah, Fern Kinney's 'Together We Are Beautiful' has come along to soothe my head.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 22 July 2004 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, I just spotted this at the record store the other day. But $29.99!! I did not bite, but was very tempted.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 29 July 2004 20:53 (twenty years ago)

download it!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 29 July 2004 20:55 (twenty years ago)

I know, but I've never had broadband and always wanted it. And I was listening to the Avalanches (well 'Frontier Psychiatrist', which I now kind of hate) in 2000 before all you fuckers so I'm allowed to play catch up with this.

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 30 July 2004 05:31 (twenty years ago)

I was really talking to the old-ILM gang, in a kind of jokey way. I realise this didn't come across!

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 07:36 (twenty years ago)

HMV do seem to get the Official/non-official Bootlegs .. i got all the UNKLE boots there (hey i aint a friend of Lavelle so how else am i going to get to hear this stuff), and these boots quality s seriously good, along with the Diminishing Returns set from DJ Shadow, and the Yoda double set .. not sure if the recent outlaws mix is a completly sanctioned legal mix but HMV are stocking that as well untill the lawyers step in i guess. saw this Avalanches set and was interested .. but never a fan of their normal album so i have held back so far ..

mark e (mark e), Friday, 30 July 2004 08:01 (twenty years ago)

God I love this thing, I've prob listened to it about 50 times since I got it on a Cd-R for my bday a year or so ago (thanks Etc!). Everyone dload it now please

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 30 July 2004 08:05 (twenty years ago)

According to the avalanches website, "those of you in the uk/europe watch out for a 'when i met you' bootleg which is actually the gimix mixtape with fake artwork posing as the new avalanches album. has been spotted on the hmv website , scheduled for release monday the 19th of july. perhaps it will just disappear back up the free-love freeway (or the hot love highway) ."

I was listening to gimix in the shower this morning (semi-consciously prompted by seeing this thread, I think) and it really is every bit as good as I remember it. Best mixtape I've ever heard.

strophic (strophic), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:10 (twenty years ago)

gimix (and the breezeblock '01/xfm one night-er '01)

piscesboy, Friday, 30 July 2004 15:35 (twenty years ago)

This is a live mix, right? So the sound quality is not going to be great?

jaymc, Saturday, 7 August 2004 23:31 (twenty years ago)

Sound quality on my .mp3s is excellent.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 8 August 2004 01:22 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm.

jaymc, Sunday, 8 August 2004 08:28 (twenty years ago)

Just picked up 'When I Met You' - sound quality is excellent and the tracks are split correctly. Not sure about the source, but it's at least as good as my slightly incomplete 320K bitrate mp3. I highly recommend this if you can find it (I paid $23 at Aron's in Hollywood). It remains my favorite ever DJ mix. Cover art is nice too.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 August 2004 01:52 (twenty years ago)

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

fourteen years pass...

It got a mention on the Best of the 00's poll list and it's surprising to me that no-one's talked about it in a decade and a half. It was really the first of things of that type (Diplo, Erol etc) and even though others came along and may even arguably have perfected The Idea (2ManyDJs etc) this is still my favourite. The first i heard of it was, one of the members who isn't Dexta was raving about it in The Face mag and just reading about it was exciting. Then i saw them DJ at The Social in London a few weeks later on my birthday. Seems i was already calling it 'life changing' in 2004, i stand by it!

piscesx, Wednesday, 30 October 2019 11:55 (five years ago)

I love (or at least loved) the mix they did for, I think, Mary Anne Hobbs Breezeblock show, which starts with the Beach Boys 'Matchpoint Of Our Love' perhaps just as much.

nashwan, Wednesday, 30 October 2019 12:20 (five years ago)

Highly recommend Robbie's BBC Essential mix from 2016.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 30 October 2019 16:21 (five years ago)

gimix, breezeblock mix, and the essential mix are all great

ogmor, Wednesday, 30 October 2019 16:23 (five years ago)

Haven't listened to the BB mix in so long, thanks for the reminder, such a great selection with perfect transitions
