Because they blew my mind in performance last night.
My backstory:
Couple weeks ago one of the owners of a local club mentions to me that Segel is playing soon (he was in Camper Van Beethoven and Hieronymus Firebrand). I file it away up there.
Meanwhile, I get on a bit of a Meredith Monk kick and finally burn my vinyl of Turtle Dreams to CD.
Yesterday I walk into my radio show and the guy before me is playing something cool. "What is this?" I ask. "It sounds like Meredith Monk." "Oh, this is this band Chaos Butterfly" says the DJ. "I just interviewed them and they're playing tonight. This woman studied with Monk."
Quickly I figure out that this is the same band Segel is in. I proceed to freak out and play MP3s off their website on the air as I promo the show.
So that evening (last night) they played and so blew my mind. Segel oversees an intricate network of Mac laptops, occasionally playing violin or guitar. Emerson spews, burbles, and warbles with flawless intonation. She mixes it all thru a little magic box so that crazy realtime manipulation is happening, all this while playing a bunch of wine glasses in front of her that are mic-ed up.
The music that came out of the speakers was a glorious mix of bewitching vocal harmonies, dense laptop mush, wild voice freakouts, glitchy drone, and stuttering little filigrees. My mouth fell open and stayed there three times.
I did a bit of an informal interview afterwards. Emerson did indeed work with Monk for over ten years and recently moved West. I'm actually not sure if Segel plays in the new CVB. I compared the set to Kaffe Matthews and Amy Denio and he knew 'em both and had played with at least Matthews.
So has anyone in the Bay Area seen these folks? They've only been around since last year as a unit. If the above sounds at all good to you, I recommend the website and MP3s for starters - http://magneticmotorways.com/chaos

Thanks, Drew!
I forgot the best part: Emerson pausing in the midst of things, taking a long drink of water from one of the wineglasses, then rubbing it, then feeding the new sound into their fearsome network, and then effortlessly matching the new pitch generated in the spiky net of sound around her. She did this more than once.

Dina's also the soprano on Dave Soldier's "The Most Unwanted Song", anyone who's heard this knows exactly what I'm talking about

She also does occasional stints with Cirque de Soleil, I forget which shows.
I like Chaos Butterfly. Favorite moments are when Segel's on violin and Dina's just holding tones.
