Not sure if it's classic, but it's one of my favorite Christmas songs.

bsj30 (bsj30), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

Completely classic, as are all the covers I've heard over the years.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, very classic. Read this:

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

From the above link:

"George croons his tale of romantic woe so sweetly it’s impossible to resist, so there’s really no point in trying (well, unless you’re an indie-rockist pigfucker, but then you’ve got bigger problems)."

Totally OTM.

Classic. The only one I'd place above it is Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses.

gspm (gspm), Thursday, 8 December 2005 03:04 (nineteen years ago)

Classic indeed.

Justin, Thursday, 8 December 2005 04:12 (nineteen years ago)

Great.

Patrick Kinney, Thursday, 8 December 2005 06:16 (nineteen years ago)

I heard Morrissey sing it live in Cambridge - Xmas, circa Boxers era. V brilliant, however incongruous it was to see fans climbing on stage and mock-sparring with him as he sang it, but there you go.

Kim Dintwas, Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:27 (nineteen years ago)

very very classic!

ned, have you heard the whigfield cover of this?

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

What an irritating, awful piece of sacchrine tripe. I don't believe you all really think it's "very very classic!". I think either you're all on some kind of nostalgia trip or you're just trying to be more anti-rockist than thou. I mean, have any of you actually bought or downloaded this record? Do you have it on your ipod? Is there ever any moment when you might think to put it on because you really want to hear it? I'm not even anti-Wham!, they did have some good singles, but this isn't one of them.

dream logic, Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

AA side wins again.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:41 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, have any of you actually bought or downloaded this record?

Of course, it's totally worth it for the super-classic gatefold 7" sleeve alone, where you open up to find wailing elf George cradling deceased reindeer Andrew in his arms! Why the fuck WOULDN'T anyone buy it?

That said, no, I never actually play it. But if you're going to rail against a song for being saccharine tripe, you might not want to be looking in the genre of CHRISTMAS MUSIC in the first place.

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 8 December 2005 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

What are you all on about, it's fucking rubbish!

We Buy a Hammer For Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 8 December 2005 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

epitaph alert!

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 8 December 2005 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

Eeeeee! Just thinking about it makes me happy. Classic! Especially the "With a note saying, I loved you, I MEANT it!" part.

Aleeshie (Aleeshie), Friday, 9 December 2005 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

ned, have you heard the whigfield cover of this?

Apparently not.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 9 December 2005 19:01 (nineteen years ago)

Good song in that like every Christmas song, you can only enjoy it during the holidays. I don't know if I could take that melody in May.

Terrible Cold (Terrible Cold), Friday, 9 December 2005 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

Absolutely my favourite Wham song; and I've never really liked Wham, and generally hate Xmas songs! But "Last Christmas" is a good'un. One of maybe a dozen pop-stars-do-seasonal-favourites that I really enjoy, up there with Joan Jett, John & Yoko, and etc.

So classic that's I find myself humming/whistling it during the summer - and I hardly ever hum/whistle anything, let alone Wham!

The V/vm version is pretty awesome, if you're into horrible sounds.

blunt (blunt), Saturday, 10 December 2005 00:23 (nineteen years ago)

I was in Germany during the holidays a couple of years ago, and this song was on the radio (and MTV Germany) ALL THE TIME. Ridiculously heavy rotation, for whatever reason. Anyhow, I grew to love it. It also wins the award for the corniest, cheekiest, twee-est, dorkiest music video in the history of the world, with the possible exception of "Just Can't Get Enough".

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 10 December 2005 02:10 (nineteen years ago)

I will kill anybody who dislikes this record.

I am so on this.

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!, Saturday, 10 December 2005 09:31 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

i have a habit of getting drunk and putting this song on and sliding down to my knees on the floor half-way through and miming along, pretending to hold a microphone, head tilted back and eyes closed, and putting my heart into it. feels great every time.

may be a couple months early for it, but this is in my heavy rotation at the moment. that fucking great, it is.

andi, Monday, 22 October 2007 07:09 (seventeen years ago)

oh, and does morrissey's live cover exist in any recording whatsoever? i'd die to hear that.

andi, Monday, 22 October 2007 07:10 (seventeen years ago)

Best xmas song--just beats out Blue Christmas.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, Monday, 22 October 2007 07:21 (seventeen years ago)

Surely a classic, but isn't it two months too early to revive this thread? :)

Heard this song today AND "everything she wants."

I always smile when I hear George Michael sing the sassy "and now you tell me that you're having my baby" part.
