Does anyone else refuse to use the word 'podcast'?

For what is presumably just an audio file you can download, why is this buzzword deemed so necessary?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

yes, it irritates me too. it makes you think it's something new and exciting when it's just a vaguely pointless extension of technology which has been around for so long that even i can work it.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

I am going to start calling mp3's "iPod food".

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

this annoys/confuses me as well!

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

someone tried to explain it to me - i guess the idea is that a podcast consists of regularly updated content, like a radio show, except one that you download. the term doesn't refer to the file so much as the practice of hosting/creating the content, perhaps? it's still a bit annoying.

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

Ah ha ha you just used the word 'podcast'.

"Refuse" ha.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

rizzx, Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

it's pretty irritating, yeah. but what else are you going to call it?

thor heyerdahl (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

mixtape

rizzx, Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

It's a broadcast that you download and listen to on your [generic MP3 player]; how is that so hard to understand?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

i understand it fine, but where's the snappy name?!?

thor heyerdahl (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

The RSS syndication/automated downloading is the important bit that makes it a podcast, I thought...

telephone thing, Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

sometimes you don't have to subscribe to a podcast to listen to a podcast. a lot of sites post links of their archived shows.

thor heyerdahl (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

Guess what The Word Of The Year is?

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

truthiness?

oh, podcast.

thor heyerdahl (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

True, but the feed syndication was what led someone (Adam Curry?) to come up with the snappy name, yes?

telephone thing, Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

pwned?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

pwncast

thor heyerdahl (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 8 December 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

Adam Curry is a snappy name, they should have called it that.

i don't understand 3 of these 4 words

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 8 December 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

punanicast.

I have never used the word, not once, and never will. It's stupid. I also never use that word which is an abbreviation for web log, because it makes me think of gumboots in mud.

Moley I have heard you use that not-weblog word in person AND on ILX! I'm totally going to tape you saying it, then use that tape in a pre-recorded internet audio entertainment file.

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 8 December 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

But it's not "broadcast" anywhere. And it is a whole lot better than the "word" "narrowcasting".

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Thursday, 8 December 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

i blame 'pod' to start with (yeah, you apple).

and let's not get started on i.

whatever (boglogger), Thursday, 8 December 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

can i have an ipod with two headphone sockets please (i-and-i-pod)?

whatever (boglogger), Thursday, 8 December 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

I have no problem with the word, especially now that people who hear it understand the concept, which is what words are supposed to do.

But I have no patience for the people who say what "is" or "isn't" podcasting - like, that you can't listen to a podcast on your computer, or at the gym, or you shouln't edit or censor a podcast as you make it, or a radio program can't be turned into a podcast, or whatever other cultural garbage people associate with it.

Ivor Cutler (mark grout), Thursday, 8 December 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Every time some person (invariably over 30) tries to get me to say that my site is (or is like) a podcast, I want to shove a sack of bricks down their throat.

I'm fine with people calling radio programs formatting for portable mp3 devices podcasts, though.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 8 December 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

I have no problem with "podcast," but I generally prefer to say "weblog" instead of "`Blog".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 8 December 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

cf ppl who complain that Television is a word created out of a greek and a latin word. "What's wrong with just saying that it's theatre sent to you by radio?" etc

:-D

Bodcast.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 8 December 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

ok, it can't be a cast until it is - which means it's not a fucking podcast until you play it on a pod, which you can't do until you download the bitch onto a pc or mac, and mcdonalds probaly have the bitch on maccast. 2nd point - calling a generic thing after a brand name is fucked, you don't put a warner into a phillips, so it's an mp3 file - big fucking deal, ppl have been using real player for years. and an ipod ain't pod shit - unless you got steve guttenberg swimming about in a pool filled with the semen of a thousand golden girl lovers, it ain't pod.

Podcasts are the new cassingles.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Am I wrong in thinking that the word has caught on largely because Apple is really selling it? The itunes website has podcasts of its own and I think iPods even come with a podcast folder already installed, as if to say "Hello good customer, pls enjoy this exciting new phenomenon known as PODCAST PODCAST PODCAST" (maybe I'm wrong i dont' have one of the damn things)

I am not bothered by the word itself so much as old people who really want to show off that they're not total luddites by casually dropping it into conversation, such as when your uncle shares an interesting fact with you, and you say "Oh really" and he says "Yes, I read it on a BLOG -- that means weblog, how d'you like that?"

Sonny, Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

it wasn't led by apple or it would have been in iTunes from the start - podcast functions were only recently (well relatively compared to how long podcasts have been floating around) added into iTunes. but they're obv interested in keeping it going and promoting the idea.

I'm always a half-decade behind the technological-wave, so happily the term is too arcane for me to really be irritated by it. Besides, most of my irritation is still reserved for the word "drops" (ie. "is released".)(Do people still say that? How about PodPeople?)

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Some think it was a bad year for music, but it must have been a REALLY bad year for words.

TRG (TRG), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

That said, I use it if only because it beats the follow-up 2-3 qualifying sentences that would likely be necessary if using anything else. Still think it's lame though.

TRG (TRG), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

how do you market something called "just an audio file you can download"? still a dumb name.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 8 December 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

I agree, it's a completely worthless word.

Why didn't people make up a word for recording radio shows onto tapes, using their tape players, back in the day? IT'S THE TAPECASTING REVOLUTION, MAN!

What happens if you burn a podcast file to an mp3? BURNCASTING, BRO!

Plenty of online radio stations had downloadable shows in RealPlayer format. RAMCASTING THE WAY OF THE FUTURE!

Really, who cares? "Podcasting" is the result of a very successful marketing campaign, and nothing else. I hate the fact that this term keeps being perpetuated.

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 8 December 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

Th phrase is annoying, but the idea of it (plug it into your computer and all the stuff you want to listen to is downloaded onto the mp3 player) is great. When the BBC pull their finger out I'm SOOO using this method to listen to the Archers.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Friday, 9 December 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

Honestly, most podcasts really suck. There still isn't a comprehensive directory listing, and even the audio formating is inconsistent (why would you still post a wav file?). I spent an hour and a half just SEARCHING for a chill podcast to listen to last night as I made dinner, and it was a real waste of time. 95% bullshit as far as I can tell (just like all webcontent, I guess). Many are filled with people promoting their own songs, or just talking up a storm. Anyway, it made me realize how damn good my podcasts are. But please, if you do find any interesting programs that are not rock or dance/techno oriented, I'd love to know about 'em. But you should probably post it on the other podcast threads.
