Of note, if anything: two nods for LCD Soundsystem, and "Wait" is up for best rap group recording...

Dan (NEW ORDER IN A LANDSLIDE, BY ALL THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

I like the cut of Dan's jib there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

Having Gorillaz there isn't too surprising. It'll go to Mariah anyway.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

I don't like the cut of my paste there! It was only supposed to be the dance category.

Dan (Stupid Browser) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

Why is that the only time I ever hear anything about Los Lonely Boys is in the same breath as the Grammys?
Not that I'm saying they should be further discussed, mind you.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

So what's the difference between Song of the Year and Record of the Year, again?

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

You need to be a pinion of at least the THIRD circle of Hell in order to release a "Song" according to Grammy regs.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

Record of the Year = producer's award
Song of the Year = songwriter's award

Dan (Reading Is Fundamental) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

I think John Legend has a lot of good odds, but that might be my love for "Ordinary People" talking.

Candicissima (candicissima), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

Is there an echo in here, Dan?

Simon H. (Simon H.), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm. I've actually listened to all five of the "best dance album" nominees. Did the Grammys forget to load that category with tepid trance dj mixes this year?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

Record of the Year = producer's award
Song of the Year = songwriter's award

um, don't forget the artist! more to the point, "record of the year" is for the artist and "song of the year" isn't (unless of course the artist wrote it).

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry! I was pretending that was implied.

Dan (Worst CYA Move Ever) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

Green Day notwithstanding, the Record of the Year nominees are fantastic. Nearly all in my top 20!

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

Oh don't lie, Green Day is your favorite choice.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

IT'S THE ONLY ROAD I'VE EVER KNOWN.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

There you go. Now smile sadly for the camera.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

isn't anyone else astonished at arcade fire's two noms? or did i imagine that press release?

marc h. (marc h.), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

1) what the fuck Song Of The Year, rappers and non-trad R&Bers don't write songs?
2) In terms of rap crossover hits, "Wonderful Night" by Fatboy Slim feat. Lateef makes"My Humps" look like "Walk This Way". It includes the line "I'M FUCKING POSH LIKE BECKHAM"!@@!!@!$%#% AAAAAAGH$##*%#*@(%)*)
3) WHO THE FUCK ARE SUGARLAND?!@?!?*????!!!!!!???? GRAMMYS!@!#!!!

yuengling participle (rotten03), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

WHO THE FUCK ARE SUGARLAND?!@?!?*????!!!!!!???? GRAMMYS!@!#!!!

you people need to watch more cmt.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

Why is that the only time I ever hear anything about Los Lonely Boys is in the same breath as the Grammys?

you people need to watch more vh1.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

isn't anyone else astonished at arcade fire's two noms?

No. (In otherwards, OH GEE SOMETHING THAT SOLD A FAIR AMOUNT AND GOT A LOT OF MEDIA ATTENTION GETS A GRAMMY NOMINATION STOP THE FUCKING PRESSES.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

(x-post to myself)

or maybe i need to be watching less of this stuff.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

It's OK for the Grammys to stop nominating Stevie Wonder and U2.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

Snark aside, Ned, two Grammy nods is also the number that substantially better-known bands like the White Stripes and Franz Ferdinand received. And you know as well as I that Merge Records hasn't really been a big player in the Grammy scene.

LONGTIME (AND DESERVEDLY RESPECTED) ILMER TOO COOL TO CARE ABOUT INDIE BAND'S SUCCESS STOP THE FUCKING PRESSES.

marc h. (marc h.), Thursday, 8 December 2005 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

fcc: i don't have cable. i'm one of *those* people.

"Snark aside"

"AND DESERVEDLY RESPECTED"

way to invent the backhanded rimjob.

yuengling participle (rotten03), Thursday, 8 December 2005 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

well, i do like ned!

anyway, back to the grammys. or -- to answer the question at hand -- probably not.

marc h. (marc h.), Thursday, 8 December 2005 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

Hating Green Day makes no sense.

Dan (Are And Always Have Been Awesome Except For That One Video With The Car Cra, Thursday, 8 December 2005 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not too cool about it, I'm just saying I'm so goddamn unsurprised by this the only thing I *am* surprised about it is the expression of surprise from others.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 December 2005 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

Seriously, people actually *know who they are,* you know?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 December 2005 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

Mariah Carey? 8 nominations? I didn't even realize she put out an album this year.

darin (darin), Thursday, 8 December 2005 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

I agree with marc h. about the Arcade Fire.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 December 2005 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

What were the Arcade Fire nominated for? I don't see their names appearing on anything from that list.

Cunga (Cunga), Thursday, 8 December 2005 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

Best Stealth Marketing

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 December 2005 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

Whoa... I can't believe LCD Soundsystem got two nominations...Other than that, I only agree with Funeral, "Since U Been Gone," "We Belong Together," and "1 Thing." There was something else, but i don't remember what it was...

xpost, Best Alternative Album

Who are the metal nominees?

pdf (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 8 December 2005 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

oh, and "Cold Wind" from Six Feet Under

Oh, and why did Steve Lillywhite get nominated? Ok, yeah, he did the crappy U2 album, but look at the only other thing under his name: Mr. A-Z by Jason Mraz...

Tape Store (Tape Store), Thursday, 8 December 2005 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

hahaha "Just barely edging out the CBGBs t-shirt and a shot of Mojo magazine....This is the Arcade Fire's first win for best indie-rock moment on the O.C."

Cunga (Cunga), Thursday, 8 December 2005 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

Death Cab having won last year, of course.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 December 2005 20:18 (nineteen years ago)

The Grammys (and other awards shows) are only valuable to me for the hilarious, gargantuan ILM threads they spawn which help me make it through hours and hours at work and because that way I don’t have to bother watching – I can live vicariously through those of you who do in fact watch.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 8 December 2005 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't know they had a remix category.

Tape Store (Tape Store), Thursday, 8 December 2005 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

A certain Seattle-based music critic will have to buy me a piece of pie if Macca wins Album of the Year and finishes top 40 in P&J.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 8 December 2005 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

Outstanding Accomplishment in the Field of Hater Baiting

:-D

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 December 2005 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

A certain Seattle-based music critic will have to buy me a piece of pie if Macca wins Album of the Year and finishes top 40 in P&J.

What are you expecting, gold-plated pie served over diamonds?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 December 2005 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

is Tim Ellison a new nickname for Geir? (sorry Tim if you are a real person, i can't tell)

yuengling participle (rotten03), Thursday, 8 December 2005 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

i'll be honest - mac's got a shot: lone boomer in the field, biggest legend, probably provokes the warmest feelings out of that crowd. mariah has a strong shot - the year's big comeback, industry heavyweight - but i don't think it's a comeback that inspires warm and fuzzy feelings really. mac's got a real shot, esp if he dies before the votes are in. he's a lock then.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, you'll be another one owin' me a piece of pie, mister.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 8 December 2005 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

the record's not bad - i listened to it again on thanksgiving, my sister had it go figure. i don't think there's an awful song on it, and i'm glad this probably really is the best received or even selling album he's had in awhile (still - it's not his time out of mind unless there's a newsweek cover i missed). my guess it's closer to being an album that wins a big grammy almost purely on the basis of demographics and 'one of these things is not like the other' (cf steely dan) than it is an album that used up it's boomer goodwill and momentum just garnering a nod at all (cf paul simon). still is mtv playing anything from it? any newsweek covers? is it one of the top selling albums of the year? no to any of the above and it's not this year's 'time out of mind' or 'ray charles meets norah jones'.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

still is mtv playing anything from it?

Kurt Loder, John Norris and comically unhip parents are the only people over forty-five allowed to be near American MTV.

Cunga (Cunga), Thursday, 8 December 2005 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

it's like that kids in the hall sketch, He's Hip, He's Cool, He's 45

yuengling participle (rotten03), Thursday, 8 December 2005 22:50 (nineteen years ago)

sorry, but an album on Merge records getting a grammy nomination is pretty noteworthy.

'Twan (miccio), Thursday, 8 December 2005 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

exactly

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 December 2005 23:03 (nineteen years ago)

How on any planet could someone not know Mariah had an album out this year.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 8 December 2005 23:04 (nineteen years ago)

Lucky, I guess.

darin (darin), Thursday, 8 December 2005 23:13 (nineteen years ago)

mtv played the hell out of 'not hard yet (but it's getting there)' in 97/98, and they still play u2 so they gots love for the old folx

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

sorry, but an album on Merge records getting a grammy nomination is pretty noteworthy.

I think the problem here is that you're all thinking that it's about Merge and I'm thinking it's about the Arcade Fire.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 December 2005 23:48 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, the Mariah comment was serious? Wow.

Dan (Hahaha Nice) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 8 December 2005 23:49 (nineteen years ago)

mtv played the hell out of 'not hard yet (but it's getting there)' in 97/98, and they still play u2 so they gots love for the old folx

something happened though around when Britney Spears first showed up where they became the Logan's Run Network.

Cunga (Cunga), Friday, 9 December 2005 00:55 (nineteen years ago)

If anything I'm pissed they still play U2.

'Twan (miccio), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:04 (nineteen years ago)

People who want to see videos by older, more respectable artists are kind of playing themselves.

'Twan (miccio), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:05 (nineteen years ago)

i think they show those on bravo.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:06 (nineteen years ago)

"Bravo respects the rights of the artists..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:09 (nineteen years ago)

sundance or ifc or whoever should have like a tbs friday night videos thing show and just show indierock videos - it would be SUCH a ratings bonanza for them, total buzzmaker.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:11 (nineteen years ago)

I'm a bit peeved that MCR didn't get any nods this year. Did they get anything last year? That poor band has been denied major accolades for so long.
What about "Ghost of You". The Grammys has a Music Video category, and that one is certainly the best I've seen this year

N/M. I'm probably just still angry with the MTV awards and am taking it out on the Grammys.
