Hey Jazz Douchebags! Post a version or several of "Caravan"

It remains a great tune, and it seems to me that even otherwise staid jazz musicians take the opportunity to do something interesting with it.

I've got brass band, trombone freakouts, and a bunch of other versions to upload when I get a chance. Let's have those YSI's.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

I remember hearing a great clanky version by Kahlil El Zabar on the radio years ago, does anyone have it?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

"I wanna hear Caravan with a drum sola."

From the Big Noise 2 compilation, Jazz Jamaica's "Skaravan"

Awesome.

Note to self: post versions by Hank Jones/Elvin Jones/Richard Davis, Leon Parker, Bob James, Wycliffe Gordon/John Allred, Ellington/Mingus/Roach, and Stooges Brass Band.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 8 December 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, Leon Parker! I love jazz yodelling.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 8 December 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Wynton's version on his first standards album is actually pretty great.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 8 December 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

i don't know how to YSI, but jimi tenor did a great version of the song on his album Intervisions.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 8 December 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Aww, I'm sorry Austin, I think you're thinking of Leon Thomas. Leon Parker is the minimalist drummer.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 8 December 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Fuck, you're right. I always get those names mixed up.

Well, I'm real fond of trombone freakouts, too, as mentioned in the header.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 8 December 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that's the John Allred/Wycliffe version, I'll post that tonight fo' sho.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 8 December 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

The ICP Orchestra does a nice version of this.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 8 December 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

I'm kind of burned out on ska in general, but I do like that "Skaravan."

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 8 December 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

"Caravan" from Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers - "Caravan."

Art Blakey - Drums
Curtis Fuller - Trombone
Freddie Hubbard - Trumpet
Wayne Shorter - Tenor
Cedar Walton - Piano
Reggie Workman - Bass

You could do worse than having a band with Freddie Hubbard and Wayne Shorter as your front line and Art Blakey as the foundation of your rhythm section...

vartman (novaheat), Thursday, 8 December 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Where's the link? The Naked City "Lonely Woman" post of yours yesterday also didn't have a link.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 8 December 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, throw it up!

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 9 December 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

Here's a bootleg of the St00ges Brass Band doing it at a show my band played with them last year. The rhythm section is fucking SICK on this one.

i like marc ribot's surf guitar version

tom west (thomp), Friday, 9 December 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

That reminds me, I had a version by some maverick French classical guitarist that was amazing, but I'm not sure where it is. I can't even come up with his name right now.

is that right? it should be ribot's version. i've never done this before

tom west (thomp), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

You did fine, Tom. I'm listening to it now. Thanks for playing!

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

Trombone freakout coming within the hour.

(I'm totally snowed in tonight.)

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

glad it worked & you're welcome & c

tom west (thomp), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

roffles have ribots

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

I thought maybe I'd heard a version by Django Reinhardt. Googling "django" and "caravan" proved less than helpful, tho.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 9 December 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

That Marc Ribot version is perfect. What album is it from?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 9 December 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

itunes says it's "Requiem for Whatsisname"

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 9 December 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

Here's the two trombone version. John Allred and Wycliffe each take one chorus, John's is tight and linear and W's is crazy, esp. the last A section.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 9 December 2005 02:34 (twenty years ago)

And here's Leon Parker on body percussion along with a singer and sax player. The percussion comes out sounding really electronic, it's cool.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 9 December 2005 02:50 (twenty years ago)

yeah, it's from 'reqiuem'. it is still the only track i have listened to on it, too /:

tom west (thomp), Friday, 9 December 2005 03:21 (twenty years ago)

I heard a lot of other versions of this before finally getting to hear one of the early Ellington band arrangements, which is now my favorite -- for some reason most other players don't keep the scary-sounding close harmonies that I like. Still, the Monk version, the Ellington/Mingus/Roach version and plenty of others aregood.

*Jazz Douchebag* Berman (Hurting), Friday, 9 December 2005 04:24 (twenty years ago)

late comer.

corey c (shock of daylight), Friday, 9 December 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

One more, this is the Great Jazz Trio (Hank Jones/Elvin Jones/Richard Davis) from a few years ago. Something weird happens to the time between the bass and drums in the first bridge, I wonder how intentional it is. Great Elvin solo.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 02:56 (twenty years ago)

Ha, I've got more.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

Here's the Ellington-Mingus-Roach version, my favorite

Phish played this often in the early days when they played a small repertoire of jazz tunes (A Train, How High the Moon, Donna Lee, Manteca). Notable are 3.9.90 w/ Dave Grippo on sax, 6.16.90, 11.4.90 Mantecaravan (with Woody Woodpecker), 7.23-24.91 w/ the Giant Country Horns, 9.25.91 Landlady->Caravan->Reba->Possum, and 5.7.93 Caravan->Manteca->Lizards.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
OK, I'm gonna have to dig these out, but I'll try to get to it this week: James Carter from J.C. on the set (he plays bari on this one I think); Max Roach with his M'Boom Percussion Orchestra; and Ted Curson & Eric Dolphy on Plenty of Horn.
