Festive 50s

Been lurking for a while, so thought I'd finally register and say hi.

A mate of mine is compiling every Festive 50 track. We've trawled our own archives, and asked friends and family etc. But there's still a few still left.

If anyone has any of the following, could you please somehow make available:

1977
MARLENE WEBBER - Right Track

1995
SAFE DEPOSIT - You Can’t

1996
CALVIN PARTY - Lies, Lies And Government
FORCE AND STYLES - Fireworks
SOUL BOSSA - Sore Loser
SWEENEY - Why?
ZION TRAIN - Babylon’s Burning

1997
THE HYBIRDS - Seventeen

1998
DERRERO - Radar Intruder
EVOLUTION CONTROL COMMITTEE - Copyright Violation For The Nation
FREED UNIT - Widdershins
L’AUGMENTATION - Soleil
MELYS - Lemming
SPORTIQUE - Kids Are Solid Gold

1999
DAWN OF THE REPLICANTS - Science Fiction Freak
KRAKEN - Side Effects
MISS MEND - Living City Plan
SONIC SUBJUNKIES - Do You Even Know Who You Are?

2000
THE CUBAN BOYS - Vinyl Countdown
MIGHTY MATH - Soul Boy
ORBITAL - Beached

Thank you very much.

Note:
I've named the Orbital track Beached, although many websites list it as seached, so some seem to take it as Searched (http://www.rocklist.net/festive50.htm).

DERRERO - Radar Intruder

Yes! Do you want it as an mp3 or are you after an actual copy? I'm sure we can come to some arrangement - I have it on CD and vinyl (it's ace).

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 9 December 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

You can order the Evolution Control Committee thing here. It's on the Whipped Cream Mixes record.

There is also a Real Audio version of "Copyright Violation..." aka "Rebel Without A Pause" on the same page.

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 9 December 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, i should have said.

MP3 would be the prefered format.

You could email me it, or make available online somewhere... or something, which ever is easiest.

Cheers

Wobs (Wobs), Friday, 9 December 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

Sounds like a great idea. Does this mean you have all the other tracks on MP3 'cos there's got to a few things there people would love to hear.

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Friday, 9 December 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Well I only have some, as I'm simply contributing for a friend. Its kind of a group effort, and the main collection is currently being compiled/sorted etc. by someone else. However, if there's a track you're after, and I can get hold of it, I'll do my upmost.

I'm sure the ones we have so far are all on MP3 somewhere.

Wobs (Wobs), Friday, 9 December 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

L'Augmentation track is available here

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 9 December 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

You can acquire The Freed Unit (hi jel!) tracks and both the others that I already posted about from the Pickled Egg webshop

http://www.pickled-egg.co.uk/

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 9 December 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for that zebedee. Have forwarded info on. Not sure if we can afford it during the festive season though!

Wobs (Wobs), Monday, 12 December 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

SPORTIQUE - Kids Are Solid Gold
MISS MEND - Living City Plan
SONIC SUBJUNKIES - Do You Even Know Who You Are?

koogs (koogs), Monday, 12 December 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Beached was a single and i have that too. Long version or radio edit?

http://www.loopz.co.uk/discog/ep/beached.html

koogs (koogs), Monday, 12 December 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

Thank you for the reply koogs.

The consensus is that having Peelie announce the track would be a bonus for the collection, so I think the radio edit. Although not essential.

Wobs (Wobs), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

(no, the single had a long version and a short version on it. found relevant minidiscs last night but that's as far as i got. maybe tonight they'll make the leap to mp3s)

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

Notfabulous quality radio-ripped (although not by me) Melys: http://s49.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0HS2YU9C7LCUY1YWGS8P0Y2HJD

kevin furr (kevfurr), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

Not sure where I got it, the mp3 was sitting on my 2000-era hard disk, but here's the Cuban Boys - Vinyl Countdown:
http://s45.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=39BLI5G7659KF16B4FDQY4FR6H

This thread is frustrating because I remember buying a few of the others but my collection is too disorganised. I'll keep excavating.

(Whatever happened to, well, most of these bands? No, that's one for another thread, I suppose.)

These are fantastic! Thank you one and all.

The list just got quite a bit shorter :)

1977
MARLENE WEBBER - Right Track

1995
SAFE DEPOSIT - You Can’t

1996
CALVIN PARTY - Lies, Lies And Government
FORCE AND STYLES - Fireworks
SOUL BOSSA - Sore Loser
SWEENEY - Why?
ZION TRAIN - Babylon’s Burning

1997
THE HYBIRDS - Seventeen

1998
EVOLUTION CONTROL COMMITTEE - Copyright Violation For The Nation

1999
DAWN OF THE REPLICANTS - Science Fiction Freak
KRAKEN - Side Effects

2000
MIGHTY MATH - Soul Boy

The Soleil track isn't that bad to be honest. And it has Peel introducing it, so that's a bonus.

Wobs (Wobs), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

i've got the soleil track (without peelie's comments) on 7". also miss mend's and evolution control commitee...
but i'm afraid i can't put them into mp3 format...
great songs btw, i'll play them again today.

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

If "Copyright Violation For The Nation" is "Rebel Without A Pause (Whipped Cream mix)" as zebedee says, then I have the 1999 7" reissue on Pickled Egg. I guess it was retitled from its original release, which was already impossibly out of print by the time Peel started playing it. Not the cleanest vinyl rip ever but hopefully it'll do if you can't find a better one:
EVOLUTION CONTROL COMMITTEE - Copyright Violation For The Nation

Disclaimer: Pickled Egg are good people and deserve your money, etc.

I may not have found most of the things I was looking for but I have uncovered many excellent forgotten tapes and 7"s while hunting, so thank you for this thread :)

R. (reb), Thursday, 15 December 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

i'd love to help as i think i have the hybirds and soulbossa tracks (and a whole stack of the already found ones) but they're on vinyl and finding them would be extremely difficult..

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Thursday, 15 December 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

miss mend have some member crossover with the projects, no?

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Thursday, 15 December 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

I think you're right about the Projects and Miss Mend; meanwhile, I believe there was a different ex-Stereolab member on that track (but not on later releases) in the form of Joe Dilworth drumming, and indeed it sounded rather Stereolab, which was all the reason I needed to buy something at the time.

(I'm glad I'm not the only one who has trouble finding records.)

Rebecca (reb), Thursday, 15 December 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

my 45s are an unordered shermozzle.. made much worse in that there's 4000 of them.

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Thursday, 15 December 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

Cheers for these.

Interesting comment about "Copyright Violation For The Nation" being "Rebel Without A Pause (Whipped Cream mix)". Hope it is.

Wobs (Wobs), Thursday, 15 December 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

regarding the Festive 50 - there is now a book out by a guy called Mark Whitby, tis a labour of love as he has issued this himself independantly, and is available via Nevin Publishing (£12)

every chart is given full attention, loads of extra detail, personal insight into the musical climate of the year.

ok, i dont agree re his thoughts on Age of Chance (no surprise there i guess!), but the book is a wondeful reference bible for all things Festive.

mark e (mark e), Friday, 16 December 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

A bit late for a stocking filler, but I'm sure I can put it on my birthday list :) Thanks mark e.

Wobs (Wobs), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

'Copyright Violation for the Nation' is more of a slogan than the title of the record, albeit a slogan that features prominantly on the sleeve of the 'Whipped Cream Mixes' 7". 'Rebel Without a Pause' is the A Side, and the B Side features the almost equally wonderful 'By the Time I Get to Arizona' - another hilarious collision between Herb Alpert and Public Enemy.

'Whipped Cream Mixes' was originally released on Eerie Materials (from San Francisco, I believe), and re-issued on Pickled Egg in 1999. This single, along with The Freed Unit's 'Widdershins' are both available from www.pickled-egg.co.uk - and yes, we are good people. L'augmentation's 'Soleil' 7" is long since sold out, although both tracks from this record, together with 'Rebel Without a Pause' feature on the double CD compilation, 'Jar', which also features songs from The Go! Team, Daniel Johnston, Need New Body, Pop-Off Tuesday, and many, many more (and would make for an ideal late Christmas gift).

Pickled Egg, Tuesday, 20 December 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for that Pickled Egg.

PS. Just noticed today that Mark Whitby (author of book- see above), is part of the email group that is compiling the Festive 50s with us.

Wobs (Wobs), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Still very much needed.

Merry Christmas!

Wobs (Wobs), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 08:08 (twenty years ago)

> 1999
> KRAKEN - Side Effects

this arrived in the post this morning so...

have multiple copies of original and more of the remix as part of various mix cds over the years but have never heard the full thing. was originally a single sided 12" but mine is one of the 4(?) 12"s that made up the Blazin' compilation. (Kraken is an earlier incarnation of Stakka & Skynet btw).

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 10:17 (twenty years ago)

We still need Kraken, and the Calvin Party track, so we could be getting closer!

Cheers john d and koogs.

Wobs (Wobs), Thursday, 5 January 2006 15:20 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Well, we have finished collecting them now, and the bloke who's
project it is has been busily compiling all the tracks. Don't know
how long he'll be doing this, but could go on for weeks, even months.

Thank you very much to all who contributed.

We noticed a few anomolies along the way, found on the rocklist
website, and I've got him to compile them:

1977 Ranking Trevor - Truly
1981 Heaven 17 - (We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove
Thang
1983 Sophie & Peter Johnson - Television Satellite
1984 Yeah Yeah Noh - Bias Binding
1987 Bhundu Boys - Waerera (My Foolish Heart)
1987 The Beatmasters Featuring Cookie Crew - Rok Da
House

1996 Aphex Twin - Girl/Boy Song
1996 Force And Styles - Fireworks
1996 Tiger - Race
1997 - The '19 that were not broadcast' is nonsense.
They were broadcast on that night but were not part of
the festive 50, and should be ignored.
1998 The Delgados - Everything Goes Around The Water
1998 Solex - Solex All Lickety Split
1998 Evolution - Rebel Without A Pause (Whipped Cream
Mix)
1998 Spiritualised - Oh Happy Day

2001 Ballboy - I've Got Pictures Of You In Your

Reminder
2003 Melt Banana - Shield For Your Eyes A Beast In The
Well Of Your Hand
2003 Golden Virgins - Renaissance Kids

At times, the errors have been copied over from (or to) the BBC
website, but these are the tracks as we believe they should be.

eg. Orbital & Angelo Badalamenti - Beached - is "Orbital - Seached"
on the rocklist website
