On a scale of 1 - 10, 10 being "most," 1 being "least," exactly how disappointed will I be if I go to see Blue Cheer in Frederick, Maryland tomorrow?

I will be very disappointed if you don't go and let us know how it was.

TRG (TRG), Friday, 9 December 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

1.
Dicky Peterson is an awesome dude.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 9 December 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Actually now I can't tell if Whaley's in or not - we might have Joe Hasselvander, formerly of Pentagram, involved instead.

Blue Cheer has made a couple live recordings in the last two years, one of which is sitting on my desk. It's fair to good and certainly rocks. They do all the tunes you want them to, loud, raw and brutal. And Dickie still sounds like a pretty good blues shouter/singer on the records.

George the Animal Steele, Friday, 9 December 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Ah fuck it I'll probably go. I mean, who could pass up an evening in Frederick?

ZR (teenagequiet), Friday, 9 December 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Is the one on yr desk Live In Japan? That's not bad at all

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 9 December 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

No, it's another newer one that sounds almost exactly like Live in Japan, which I also had. And, yeah, I liked that CD but traded it when I found the newer one was a different recording of the same band that sounded functionally equivalent.

George the Animal Steele, Friday, 9 December 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

It's Hasselvander, alright.

O RLY? (eman), Saturday, 10 December 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

This is quite a weekend for the suburbs--Blue Cheer in Frederick and Sunday night Three 6 Mafia in Bladensburg.

adam (adam), Saturday, 10 December 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Jesus, that's about as diverse as it gets... what, no All-4-One in Hagerstown? Buckwheat Zydeco in Laurel?

Mugged Outside the Jabberjaw, 1993 (Bent Over at the Arclight), Saturday, 10 December 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

So three days on -- how disappointed was anybody? Or all too preemptively disappointed to go?

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Monday, 12 December 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

It couldn't have been any more disappointing than any other day in Frederick.

Fredneck

I saw Blue Cheer in '87 in San Francisco, Peterson the only original member; felt thunderously great, at least in that moment (and I'd never been a huge fan of their albums). I tried to get Simmons to run a "review" where all I did was imitate the sounds the drums, bass, and guitar were making.

By "this" I of course mean the Maryland show.

Lee is Free (Lee is Free), Friday, 5 May 2006 02:51 (twenty years ago)

I'd go if George Brigman was opening.

Unlimited Toothpicker (eman), Friday, 5 May 2006 03:30 (twenty years ago)

I lamed out on the Fred. show b/c other plans interrupted, but I heard from several friends that it was ridiculously good. No way in hell am I missing the 6/16 Black Cat show, though.

Do you live around D.C./MD, Lee?

just another chicagoan (just another chicagoan), Monday, 26 June 2006 05:16 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeah, i forgot to revive this - i went to that black cat show, and it was pretty cool. loud as shit, they played everything you'd want them to play and they did it well. good stuff all around.

also featured a totally awesome/hilarious moment when duck told dickie to tell a story - "he's got a lot of great stories," duck says. so i'm expecting a decent old-tymey acid tale of some sort. here's the story (you'll have to imagine the halting, gravelly delivery for yourselves): "man, so we were in japan once...playin with a band...whaley don't speak a word of japanese, their drummer don't speak a word of english...but they were yellin 'sake sake' or whatever you call it..." (two minute pause) "we saw em in the elevator later."

cool story, dickie!
