I was really just wondering if you guys rate the "Never Going Back To Georgia" LP; I think it's better than Psychedelic Lollipop.

Better? Shit, are you on Soulseek right now? I think pretty highly of Psychedelic Lollipop.

I've always liked Basic Blues Magoos, even though their cover of "I Can Hear the Grass Grow" doesn't compare to the original. Haven't really given Never Goin Back to Georgia much attention. A very quick perusal of the tracks during a college radio shift didn't seem too promising, maybe it deserves a second look?

I was just thinking of the Blues Magoos because a friend of mine made me a copy of the pre-Sparks Halfnelson demos from 1969 yesterday and they kind of sound like if the Blues Magoos had decided to become even MORE psychedelic after Psychedelic Lollipop (as opposed to less - I would assume? - I haven't heard the later Blues Magoos albums).

Well, and if the Blues Magoos had people as brilliant as the Mael brothers in the band, too, of course.

Sounds awesome.

the real great almost godzian blues magoos track is the title track. chanting & clanging, but well done! they were good musicians! even though it's mostly a diff. band at that point...

I remember the Magoos' song with the refrain "Never go back to Georgia" (don't know if that's what they called the song; its title in the boogaloo versions by Joe Cuba and by Johnny Rios was "El Pito") getting lots of FM rock airplay back in the day, and boring me silly at the time. I only heard the boogaloo versions later, and love them, so either I'd love the Magoos' version too were I to hear it now, or it's really not that good.

The thread title should have been "We ain't got no BLUES MAGOOS thread YET."

I have never checked out Blues Magoos but they sound like something I would like. For some reason I was under the impression that they were a Lemon Pipers kinda thing.

pre-Sparks Halfnelson demos from 1969

Does this sound much like the album then?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 12 December 2005 01:18 (twenty years ago)

I have not heard the 1st Sparks album. Probably recorded at least a year and a half later? "Saccharine and the War" is the only song from the demos that ended up on the album. (And just to be clear, they are called "the Halfnelson demos" because the band was called Halfnelson at that point, not because they were demos for what would be the Sparks album entitled 'Halfnelson'.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 12 December 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

I see. The first album was released under the name Halfnelson though and then reissued later as Sparks - Halfnelson.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 12 December 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

Did they still have the sixties garage sounding organ on the album? This guy says the Halfnelson album is "not as psychedelic as the (now infamous) Halfnelson demos." These demos are really something else. There's a petition on the internet to get the Mael brothers to release them.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 12 December 2005 05:10 (twenty years ago)

Did they still have the sixties garage sounding organ on the album?

Not really. The only song I would say is kind of a psychedelic Sparks is called "Roger" which is one of the best songs on the album incidentally.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 12 December 2005 05:24 (twenty years ago)

Oh, there's a version of that on the demos, too.

ten years pass...

Where's the thread for bands whose names dissuade you from checking them out? I can totally understand why Blues Magoos might fit that bill for some. Unfairly, though. Stuff is so good and sounds unaged.

eight years pass...

Has anybody seen or got a physical copy of the Bgo 3lps on 2cds set that has been supposed to be being released since November?

I have seen the date listed on Amazon get shifted progressively later so wonder if the same is true elsewhere. Not sure what other places to look for expected date.

Have now seen that the current Jimmy Page cover Record Collector has it featured in a full page BGO advert. I assume that is something of a good sign, if not definite.

Assume there may be rights issues at play. Not sure what story is with label.
Other than not trusting their mail order if you're outside the UK.

So you want to buy these CDs, but you ain't got nothin' yet?

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 1 February 2025 12:03 (one year ago)
