human after all-best album of 05

i'm telling you it's the best thing daft punk has ever done...it's so live...it's so anti-idm...and most of all it sounds absolutely original...i remember when discovery came out and everyone slagged it...for like two years...and then all of the sudden it was everyone's favourite album...watch everyones opinion change in about six months

tombb, Monday, 12 December 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

change one tempo, frenchy

gear (gear), Monday, 12 December 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Is this a post about the Grammy awards?

watch everyones opinion change in about six months

Why, are they releasing a new version where they edit all the songs to be half as long?

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 12 December 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

not even daft punk liked this heap of shit. it was a contratual obligation, it was rushed, and it suffered because of it. biggest dissappointment of '05.

Tynan DeLong (TynanTynan!), Monday, 12 December 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

you might want to hear the track that "robot rock" is a cover of... i mean the track that "robot rock" samples..

sov panda, Tuesday, 13 December 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

I like it still. Not really touching my top ten but yeah.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

about half of it is really good!

turboalbino (haitch), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

Provided a half-as-long edit of that good about-half is done, it's a pretty solid double 12".

blunt (blunt), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

this thread is DAFT, you PUNK

ahahahaha

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!, Tuesday, 13 December 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

hahahahahahhahahah

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

actually, Tynan, do you have any reasons (besides the album itself) to think that daft punk doesn't want to make music anymore, ie it was a contractual obligation? now i'm curious

sovpanda, Tuesday, 13 December 2005 02:24 (twenty years ago)

contractual obligation doesn't mean you dont want to make music anymore, it means you don't want to make music for that label anymore. hence you phone one in to finish up your deal and move on.

Renard, Tuesday, 13 December 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

I still kind of like it.

(Also, have Daft Punk ever been "IDM" at any stage of their career? They seem to be primarily concerned with booty, and the moving thereof, even with all the dour stuff on Human After All...)

telephone thing, Tuesday, 13 December 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

i don't believe for a second that they hate it...no band that puts out two albums in over ten years is going to shit out a third for the hell of it...they're not merzbow...(who cares if they do hate it...all musicians like their shit albums the best)...it's an awesome album...it sounds good BECAUSE they spent no time on it (hence my idm comment...i wasn't suggesting that they ever were idm....but more that this was a sorta response to the minute detailing of most electronic music..)they sounded like a band...albeit a fucked up one...BEST ALBUM OF 05...one day you'll all agree

tombb, Tuesday, 13 December 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

tombb so OTM it hertz.

brettino's bounce (Da ve Segal), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

shocked by the luv here! i'm with Eppy, robot rock (or technologic or any of the other ones with a good riff) is sweet for about 30 seconds. after 5 minutes, gimme a break.

the argument that it sounds good because they spent no time on it and there are no interesting details is not convincing me, sry. right now there's tons of stuff that bangs way hard and still has all kinds of details and variety .... Vitalic, Francisco, Booka Shade etc is not some idm chinstroker music ...

Soulwax Nite Versions about 100x as good as Human After All ...

Renard, Tuesday, 13 December 2005 05:15 (twenty years ago)

lesson in funny

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

I absolutely love this record.

"Human" is annoying, brutal, punishing, boring, masturbatory and almost immediately makes you hate its stunted hooks. There is no soul or "depth." But the record is ineradicable: unprecious, monolithic, itching, oily, and black. The title track especially is like Wire's "Mercy" distorting as it comes out of a transistor radio.

I'm with tombb. It's one of the only "major" records I cared about this year.

jules deferens, Tuesday, 13 December 2005 05:52 (twenty years ago)

It's in my Voice Pazz/Jop ballot. Played it to death and love it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 05:57 (twenty years ago)

This seems as good a place as any to ask: has the title track single been released yet? I can't find it at any US or UK retailer online...

telephone thing, Tuesday, 13 December 2005 06:04 (twenty years ago)

Still not heard this! But I WILL buy it before the end of the year. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it makes my year end Top 10.

Jeff W (zebedee), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

i forgot to buy this. maybe it will be cheap, in the january sales.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

it's equidistant between best and worst.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

has the title track single been released yet?

Yes, with five different remixes...

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Aha- looks like it's France-only, at least so far. Thanks.

telephone thing, Tuesday, 13 December 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

with this everyones opinion change in about six months...do you remember any other album which actually provoked the change of opinion after some time? i can only think of Pinkerton. (And i doubt this will happen with HAA.)

karl76 (karl76), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

"Technologic" is probably my favorite Daft Punk single since "Da Funk".

Dan (Woot Woot) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

if they had released an ep consisting of 'robot rock', 'the brainwasher' and 'human after all' and...um...well, those three, it would have been one of the best eps of the year.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

"Robot Rock" is fucking horrible, though.

Dan (Plodding Go-Nowhere Nonsense) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

I may never listen to 'Make Love' or 'Emotion' again. But then I never listen to 'Too Long' or 'Rock n' Roll' either.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

I never listen to 'Robot Rock' now that I have that Breakwater track. I wonder if this was something DP thought about.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

god, i haven't even bothered to track down a copy of this. why should i? can someone (stevem?) please ysi the most representative track? i liked the first half of the first two albums fwiw.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

'too long' is AWESOME.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

I was about to say, "Too Long" is def. one of my absolute favourites off of Discovery these days.

Haven't pulled out Human After All in ages, should do it again some time.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

Emotion is great!

Baaderonixx weaves a daisy chain for... SATAN!! (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

"do you remember any other album which actually provoked the change of opinion after some time?"

well I think the thread starter's thesis is that that happened with Discovery, and I'll concede that's sorta true ... I didn't like it at first and it grew on me ... I don't see that happening with Human After All though.

Renard, Tuesday, 13 December 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

"make love" is brilliant daft punk shit. but here's a fact: they took two weeks to make this album when they could've taken four years. obviously this was a fart to get out of their contract. because this is no where near what they are capable of.

Tynan DeLong (TynanTynan!), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

"Emotion" is the best Daft Punk song ever.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Yep! Emotion is indeed great.

earnest (earnest), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

Adding to the "Emotion" love. Really great way to end the album, and it and "Make Love" both work for me in ways that, say, Air generally doesn't.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

Make Love love thirded, my favorite track by far

tremendoid (tremendoid), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

edit half as long? no, emotion should be 12 min long.

Yawn (Wintermute), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

That Pitchfork review is even more stupid now that Cosmo Vitelli is releasing such brilliant records.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

ha, the drawings will always be classic though

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

I like Robot Rock :(

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

I have to agree that Pitchfork review never gets old.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

this album is a total classic if only because the remixes that have been made of the singles have been among my favorite remixes of anything ever... between sebastian, justice, vitalic and to a lesser extent, basement jaxx and digitalism, i'm almost convinced this album was made simply to be remixed (possibly even deliberately by the new french guard, or whatever you want to call them, kind of as a passing of the torch).

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

not [EOM]

Mitya (mitya), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Ned I didn't even realize we agreed on this! But yeah its good.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

i think the thing is here is that you can hear them getting totally lost in their own loops...so there's no fucking around...you can almost see them getting something going and at the peak of their excitement pressing record without ever meddling around with it enough to get sick of it...it's sorta the neil young/david briggs approach to electronic music

tombb, Wednesday, 14 December 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

more like the badly produced dj tools approach to electronic music

Yawn (Wintermute), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Synths that sound like Donald Duck = classic.

brettino's bounce (Da ve Segal), Thursday, 15 December 2005 06:34 (twenty years ago)

A fantastic record.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 03:32 (nineteen years ago)

It rocked like fuck last December, it still rocks like fuck today.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 08:20 (nineteen years ago)

Human After All - Excellent track, a bit parodic of the Discovery album but it does the job very well.

Primetime of Your Life - This sounds more like a DJ tool than a track proper. Thing is, I've tried mixing it with other things and it's impossible. Useless really.

Robot Rock - I like it, but it's deceptively slow. Do you really want to "rock out" to a repetitive beat for 5 minutes?

Steam Machine - It's almost designed to plod on and on and on.

Make Love - Harmless fluff, but way too long and boring.

The Brainwasher - Uncomfortable industrial techno done badly. Also way too long.

On/Off - A filler track on an album that only has ten songs. Pointless.

Television Rules The Nation - Not that bad, not that good. Very repetitive and the concept "Oooh, people don't half watch a lot of TV these days" isn't really expanded on throughout the song. You're better off just reading the title.

Technologic - Music that was pretty much designed to fit a dozen Apple commercials. And hang on, haven't we heard this before but done better? A poor man's Harder Better Faster Stronger, only Fat Boy Slims's "Slashdotcom" track manages to out bollocks this tune. That said, the Basement Jaxx remix is an absolute stormer.

Emotion - Apathy is the only emotion I feel when listening to this.

Since when were you a Sloane Ranger?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 12:03 (nineteen years ago)

"Human After All" was Daft Punk's attempt to be LCD Soundsystem. The problem being, when "Human After All" was released, everyone was already sick of LCD Soundsystem and realized they were overrated.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

Well, the rocking out thing has been done with great results by Chemical Brothers, but it just didn't work out in this case.

gear (gear), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

the "Human After All" single was the best thing to come out of this.. almost all the remixes improve on the original.

Also the videos... although I don't think I could see the "Prime Time Of Your Life" video ever again starting with the scene where she proceeds to shed her skin literally.

gwynywdd dwnyt fyrwr byychydd gww (donut), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

The best remix to come out of this album is definitely that Para One "Prime Time..." remix. Amazing.

the "Human After All" single was the best thing to come out of this.. almost all the remixes improve on the original.

Disagree, the album version is the true highlight of this record and the only one with an emotional impact as strong as anything on Discovery. The remixes watered it down.

The best thing to come out of the album was how the elements appeared in their Coachella set.
